Restartitis...is there a cure?

Post » Tue Dec 24, 2013 2:05 pm

There seems to be more and more players suffering from this terrible disorder lately, what can be done to help those with this awful affliction?
I'm one of the lucky ones who have never suffered with it but I see many players desperately trying to come to terms with this dreadful condition which seems to be reaching epidemic proportions. How does it start and what are the early symptoms? How can we see the signs and help these poor players cure themselves so that they can once again play Skyrim like normal people?

All suggestions gratefully received, remember they need your help now!

There are some of us who do not believe it is a curse, but a blessing in disguise

I'm way too far gone to offer any help/advise on this subject.

There is only one cure that I know of but it takes you down a very dark path. I've said too much.

I think it stems for nostalgia. They are connected to one character, but then they start over and are unable to re-connect to the new one, so they are doomed to restart every 10 or 20 levels to try to connect again.

Early signs may be something like, "I want to start a new character, but I don't want to let, [insert name] go."

Play a different game. I haven't played Skyrim sincr GTA V came out. Online is very fun. Can be chaotic at times.

I tried Skyrim last week but am still too burned out. Made an Imperial who reached Riverwood. Deleted him 5 minutes later.

Well it isn't so much that I suffer it. While I dont constantly start over, I'm always planning my next character, even while a brand new one is just entering Helgen in the beginning. So I think the fact that I do indeed think about it, is kinda just as bad. And I will add that for some reason I can only have 3 characters on my PS3 at any given time, otherwise they'll get written over. So maybe that's what keeps my condition at bay.

Yes, it sounds like being limited to the "only 3 characters situation" may actually be helping to control your condition.

Indeed. I think if I was able to keep more than 3 I'd be burned out from this condition.

I took a long break (less than 2 weeks) and then I was cured. I only restart if the character is killed, the roleplay is boring or the characters story is finished.

I will say that this past weekend is the first time Ive played since October. I picked up right where I left off with my last character. I will say so far I have no desire to restart.

Oh, I've been suffering.

"Let's create him/her *backstory*"

*the next day*

"Let's create a Breton!"

*next 4 days*

"Hmm, an Imperial Thief"

*few minutes later*

"Haven't been an Argonian for a while."

It continues...Oh, it continues.

For me, there's one cure...Going to my hard drive and wipe them from existance...But I did that countless times already.

I always "save" the ones I really like on my USB(for future use when I get a PC). But in my 3 years of playing, there's only 4 characters on it :c

Sounds like quite a severe case here, maybe you should wipe the USB too....I know it's hard but you just have to be brave and confront these issues!

Don't be pedantic Michael, this player is suffering and we should be helping them get over their problem not making it worse! LOL

Dude it's like a bandaid. Just rip it off quickly. We're all here for you. Thats what support groups are for.

I'm trying to continue with my current character till at least level 70. Naturally in the back of my head I already constructing a new character, that I'm afraid is also a part of the Skyrim restartitis disease. We do it because its so much fun to restart with a new character/build.

It can be very addicting. But without a support group, can get out of control quite rapidly. Just be careful.

The "thinking of a new character while I play this one" syndrome. Definitely an early sign, lucky we spotted this early I think.

That was my case. It's being monitored so it shouldn't get out of hand.

I spent a sleepless night thinking up a back story and how to connect the dots on a new RP I have in my head. I already created the character but shelved the save file for when I am ready. Thing is I keep going over all the ideas and now I can't stop. I need sleep!

Skyrim is by far the most addictive game I ever played. Of coarse I haven't played many RPG games. Skyrim was my first RPG game and it glued to me instantly. Only game I played more is Red Dead Redemption.
