Is Restoration useful aside from healing?

Is there any good reason to get Restoration to a high level?

Well, the Ward spells might be useful. At low levels, the wards burn magicka too fast, and in particular, if you plan to use magick attacks against the enemy, they cause you to be too depleted to fight back. However, there's a perk which lets your wards absorb the magicka from the enemy attacks (I haven't tried this yet, so don't know how effective it is - i.e. if it only absorbs a tiny amount of magicka, might not be that useful; if it absorbs more magicka than the ward consumes, it would be very useful).

If you just want to survive enemy magicka attacks, then fight back with a weapon, the Ward spells could be useful to allow you to wait until the enemy mage/magic critter expends it's magicka, then you could move in for the kill. I'm not sure, but I imagine there is a cure disease spell you could eventually get which might be useful.

Grab novice, the healing boost, and respite and you're set. No reason to go further, wards are awful and undead aren't numerous or dangerous enough to invest that heavily into a skill tree to deal with.

Perks in the Restoration tree make their healing spells gives you stamina -

I'm finding this useful as a heavy armor sword and board kind of player (power shield bash, heal regaining health and stamina from power bash).

Great healing to both HP and stamina, necromage perk is awesome, ward spell is very good against spell casting enemies and there's also a perk that speeds up magicka regen by 50% in restoration school. +The circle of protection that makes all undead flee.

Invest in it just enough to get Regeneration and the 2 Recovery perks.

Restoration spells, with all the perks, can let you absorb enemy magicka cast at you, regenerate stamina as well as health, and also let you completely own all the undead.

While the undead aren't as numerous as regular enemies, some undead enemies like Draugr Scourges and Draugr Deathlords are extremely dangerous and having an edge over them is helpful.

Aside from the obvious perks like more healing, stamina and even additional Magicka regen there are other nice perks like spells being more effective against the undead.

What's a ward spell?

It's a magic shield that gives you +Armor and absorbs up to a certain amount of magical damage ("Lesser Ward", the Novice level of the spell, Adds 40 Armor and Absorbs up to 40 points of damage) - so if an enemy spell would do 50 points of damage, you only take 10 points. The problem with it is that it's an "active" spell - the shield goes away the instant you stop casting it, so it constantly drains your magicka at a pretty alarmingly fast rate.

I personally like the recover perk which increases magic recover by 25%. I also find wards to be useful against dragons and mages, it blocks magic attacks and increases defense. I use a Dunmer spellsword and well probably use wards until I get the block perk that reduces spell damage. You can also have a ward up while attacking or using magic.
