[WIP] Restored LAPD Riot armor / HERMES armor

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 4:24 am

I dig it as it is, but the only thing that really makes it loo more futuristic is that it isn't baggier under the plates on the torso, but that's a less than simple thing to fix and I like this anyway. It's cool stuff!

Now here'd be an interesting job, making a helmet (Converting the ranger one?) to aesthetically fit with it.

Personally, I'm a little iffy on the fully plated legs. A bit more space between plates, would probably make it seem less like a suit of futuristic knights armor.

Last update for today;

I just finished the armor + textures and tested it ingame for the first time. I didn't pay attention to the weightpainting at all. I actually just did a quick boneweight copy in blender so don't pay attention to the deformed armor. I did this just to see what it looks like ingame and unfortunately for some reason I'm not satisfied with it at all. I actually expected the baked textures to look weird ingame however they look really nice, instead it's the mesh that kind of looks weird ingame. I might work on it a little bit more however I would hate t start all over from scratch again with some parts. But right now I'm definitely thinking about redoing the boots. The armor doesn't look as dynamic as I was hoping it to be. Besides that I didn't go for a "bulky" kind of armor but right now I think this looks a little bit too skinny for my taste. I actually took a screenshot from a good angle but for some reason it makes the head look really big, especially my custom character [which actually has a head that is slightly bigger than the vanilla ones]. So I guess I'll try to make some parts of the armor a little bigger tomorrow which will hopefully make a lot of difference.

Anyways here are a few ingame screenshots to keep you guys entertained;

Oh btw if the neck area seems a little weird it's because I haven't modeled the neck area yet ;)

If Geo doesn't, I certainly could. I know my way around mesh conforming.

If he based it off the unremarkable near-perfect grid chest piece that the vanilla ranger armor, it may take a bit longer, because some extra geometry would need to be added to properly make room in the bust.

That would be nice if you could do that just see if you are still up to it when I finish this armor. I know a lot of people would appreciate a female version as well :)!!!. To be honest really I don't like making female gear :( I don't know why but I just prefer to make male armor only? So I'm not stopping you if you or someone else wants to make a female version of this armor!

In terms of the armor looking too... skinny... I can understand what you mean.

Even though the Ranger Combat Armor implies that there is 'combat armor' involved... without that beefy duster, it really doesn't have any of the mass of the standard combat armors. I'm not sure if we're all just used to seeing it with the big over-coat, or if maybe you really might want to add a little 'width' to your mesh... but whatever it is, I do understand why you might be feeling a little less satisfied than you'd like. Personally, I still love it... but it definitely does seem to be missing something.

I'm sure that a 'collar' isn't making -that- big of a difference... it's got to be something...

Oh well! It still looks awesome... and I'm still gonna be sitting around here waiting all impatient like... so keep up the amazing work.

-Cheers!

Personally I'd like to see a version with no armor on the arms and a smaller lower leg piece. It's a bit too much like Mass Effect for my taste.

Great work on it, though.
I think the main issue with the size is that one expects the chest area to be a bit wider.
That glove on the right hand looks a bit off with the rest because it's clipping/coming out of the right hand armored piece.

I agree with Poison_Berrie... I'd prefer fatigues (maybe with some straps for equipment, kneeguards) and military boots than the legplates and sleek shoes.

Add a longcoat and stormtrooper helmet/gasmask a la ranger armor and that would be sweet.

Add my name to the list for requesting a female version.

I like it as is, actually. Sure it's like a pseude-ME armor, but it looks like something Riot Police of the future could use. Kind of like Robocop. Those guys were decked out like Space Marines in Robocop 2. Fine tune it of course, make it work, but maybe you could add the various pieces as optional add-on parts, like antistar suggested, as I think that idea is swell. Items such as;

Bottom Parts:

LAPD Fatigue Pants w/ Normal Boots/Riot Boots

Pistol Holster

Combinations of the Above

Chest Parts:

Vests like Tactical/Dragonskin/Stealth

A Long Coat (could just be a Ranger one adjusted to cover what's needed, or a brand new ballistic long coat the LAPD could've wore)

Head Parts:

Un-Ranger'd Riot Helmet

Vault Security Style-Riot Helmet

Gas Mask Helm

It's the armor that is under the combat ranger armor. So that would negate all his work.

No it wouldn't. It would get rid of the jeans and cowboy boots which make no sense for a modern armor. The duster is all that is needed for the western feel.

I like it with the armored pants...

... but that being said, I could definitely see it with a pair of black police fatigues as well, maybe with a couple tactical cases and some supplemental thigh/knee guards or something. I think that The 3rd Type's idea is actually fairly interesting, too. I wonder why more armors aren't made with things like that. Liferiaty is the vice of spice. Or whatever the saying is...

Anyhow... I'm still in love with this armor... so chyeah... don't mind me.

You do as you see fit. I'll drool and wait expectantly.

Okay I'm back!

I spend nye in Paris so I was out of the country for a few days but I'm back now and started working on the armor again. I changed the top part of the mesh, made the shoulders a little bigger and the chest area. The model is now a little deformed but you probably won't notice it at first sight. But right now I'm really having a hard time weightpainting this mesh. I usually just do boneweight copy in blender but I tweaked it around a little. I made the upper arms into a somewhat static mesh. It shows some clipping right now but I guess I like it better this way. At least better than bending in a organic way. So I got most of that covered, the only part that really annoys me is the groin area. The back looks fine but the groin looks all messed up in running or sneaking mode. Right now it's a separate model so I'm thinking about removing it and just integrating it with the underlying mesh.
I also got to work a little more on the shoulders, I think they look fine like this ingame, they only look slightly weird in aiming mode. So I'm going to give it another shot myself.

But if there is anyone who has a lot of experience with this could do it for me I would be very grateful! Like I said I'm going to give it another try myself first and hopefully it will be okay. In the meantime volunteers are very welcome ;)!

Anyways here's a screenshot;

I finally managed to get the skinning somewhat right so I consider that to be finished now lol. I finally finished the whole mesh + neck area so that means that the model is done. Right now I want to start working on a few color variations but also a more weathered version of this. Anyways here's a final screenshot but I don't think you guys can really tell the difference lol other than that the groin area looks [less pretty] different but works a lot better than the previous one.

thanks!

I also started working on the weathered version today;

http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f119/Geonox_2/wipworn.jpg

I put some bulletholes in the chest area and other parts of the armor. It looks more rusty and kind of dirty from walking around in the desert. It also looks more brown-ish than the original and the paint looks more weathered.

I also made a darker/black version;

http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f119/Geonox_2/wipdark.jpg

As for the original I have these color combinations so far;

Blue, Yellow, Green, Red, Orange, Black, Grey and some kind of odd looking yellowish-green. :) I think I stop working on this thing for today, I actually wanted to finish it today because it's my last day off but ill finish it somewhere next week I guess.

That looks neat.

Did you ever consider the ideas for addon parts? I may have missed it if you already said you did.

Great progress in your armor, Geonox. Looking fine indeed. Any per chance you MIGHT, just might make some sort of Riot helmet? Or nah? =P

Oh wow... it just keeps looking better and better!

I'm definitely sold on the way it looks, now... although if you did decide to make a variant with fatigues instead of the legs... or some variation of armor-pants thing... I would totally use that, too. All in all, it's a damn fine suit of armor.

And after looking up the history of the armor, the fact that it's got the 'H3RM35' (HERMES) designation completely excuses any overly futuristic appearance it may have. After all, HERMES was supposed to be the "Future of Combat Armor. All of the protection of Power Armor, without the Power-Assistance."

This certainly looks like the 'Future' of combat armor to me.

Yeah I read it but it's going to be a lot of extra work. So I'll just finish the normal version of the armor and then I'll look into a version of this armor with normal pants and boots. But it's not as simple as just clicking copying and pasting so its probably going to take me some time :/. But don't worry I'll try to look into it I actually don't like wearing full armor that much so I guess I'll also look into another version. Also I might be able to copy the holster from my other Riot Armor mod and adjust it a little bit so it fits this one.

Thanks! Well I am thinking about doing that, I think that the original helmet that goes with the Combat Ranger Armor is the original Riot helmet. Well at least it makes sence, it has the HERMES "logo" on it and it definitely makes sense to wear a gass mask but I'm afraid the textures are a little out of place with this mesh. But I'll just try to make new textures for it :). But like I said before first I want to finish the armor and then afterwards I'll look into possible addons.

Oh wow... it just keeps looking better and better!

Thanks :)! It looks really good on my custom character as well. I didn't put any effort in the character in the screenshots, it's just a placeholder and made it in 2 sec to show what it looks like on a vanilla head.
I know! that's why I actually also kind off went for the futuristic look, Besides that I think the Stealth Armor from the Anchorage DLC also looked pretty futuristic so I guess it fits the game. I have no idea yet on the damage settings though. I don't want it to be overpowered.

Make it a statistical clone of the Ranger Combat Armor, since its pretty much the same armor. Just looking 10X more badass.
How about some armored gloves to go with it?

Any chance of taking the pants from this or your other riot armor mod and using it to replace the lame jeans on the standard ranger combat armor?

This looks pretty good man, nice job! Btw remember that it's not supposed to look futuristic by our standards, it's supposed to look "the world of tomorrow!" atomic age type futuristic.
