[WIP] Restored LAPD Riot armor / HERMES armor

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 10:40 pm

Heya guys,

It's been some time since I posted a new WIP topic on these boards, I think the last time was when I was still making mods for morrowind [lol] anyways I'm back! Currently I'm working on a few projects at once so progress is going kind of slow for some projects. But one of the main projects I've been working on lately is actually kind of inspired by my latest armor mod, the riot armor which features a part of the http://operatorchan.org/vg/src/vg59166_617px-RangerCombatArmor.png. Something I noticed wile cleaning up the vanilla combat ranger textures is that the chest part says "LAPD Riot". Which made me wonder what the original Riot armor must have looked like.

So here's my attempt;

http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f119/Geonox_2/WIPFRONTBACK.jpg

The models and UV Mapping are done so far, right now I'm still working on the textures. Right now it still looks kind of clean but first I want to get the base textures right and then I'll start weathering the armor. I'm not quite sure about the red stripes on the arms though, but I thought it would be nice to have some kind color on the armor that indicates the rank of the one who is wearing it. Took me a lot of time and a lot of versions to get the right proportions and shape. I want it to look unique in a way but I also want it to fit in the game as well. The model is slightly different than the vanilla armor, the chest plates on the vanilla armor are completely flat wile mine stick out a little more but I just thought it looks nicer. Anyways comments tips and ideas are welcome!

My first thought was: Commander Shepard - N7? :sadvaultboy:

The red stripes make it look like it's something Commander Sheppard would wear.

The piece directly below the shoulder-pads seems a bit too close to the shoulder-pads, though that might change once it's worn by and in game character.

I agree with The 3rd Type.

Thanks guys!

I know I also wasn't sure if I should use the red stripes. I'll try to come up with something else instead I guess, maybe a different color or just something else. I do want to add some color though but I still have to figure out how ;). Anyways I also started making the leg textures:

http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f119/Geonox_2/WIPLEGS.jpg

I still have to texture a lot :P Anyways I'll stop working on this one for today take some rest and continue tomorrow :) I'll keep you guys posted!

BUT I LIKE THE RED.

Alright but srsly I'll stop capping now.

Anyway, keep the red, please, because you're going to kill two birds with one stone for me: Complete set of LA RIOT Armor, and I'm also pseudo commander shepard without breaking lore.

I think you can see the beauty of such a thing, eh?

Also your avatar reminds of a certain somebo-CHRRRIIIIIIIIIIIISSSS

Are you high 3rd Type? :mage:

Still, the armor is VERY nice, but for some reason it looks tad too futuristic for a simple police riot armor. More like a Combat Armor mk. V
Say, would it be possible to keep just the armored kneepads and boots with the armor and just have ... normal grunt pants with 'em?

Damn dude, that is some sweet armor.

Requesting a dark/worn navy blue in place of the red, though... maybe two versions if it isn't too hard?

Oh holy hell... that looks amazing!

As for the red stripe... I say you should make a couple variants, each with a different color. SWAT units are often broken up into designated teams... and what better way to identify the different teams than by the colored stripe on their gear? Blue Team, Red Team, Gold Team, Green Team? That would be a perfect excuse to see which stripe you like best... and also please everyone who perhaps wants a different color. Me, I dig the red... but I think a blue version would be sweet, too, what with that being the standard color associated with police and all... so y'know, whatever works.

Amazing. Absolutely freakin' amazing.

On its own merit, the model looks great and the texture looks great.
In the context of the game, it looks like a re-textured Chinese stealth armor with a slightly tweaked mesh.

I can't really see any relationship to the Chinese Stealth Suit maybe with the exception that this, too, is black... and a suit... but maybe you're seeing something I'm not?

I actually think it looks more like Commander Sheppard's armor than it does anything already extant within Fallout... which is fine by me, because the design of his armor with all it's smooth curves and epic light-reflection effects was something that really sold that game for me. Still, this is a beautiful model and a damn impressive texture... and it is distinct enough that, even if it was ripped right off the stealth suit's design, there isn't enough remaining for me to either notice or care.

Hopefully, most folks will feel the same in that regard... because I don't want to see a thing changed. (Maybe the colored stripes... but that'd be it...)

This armor looks awesome. Totally cool. When you release it, could you include the non-weathered textures as well in the download? Also, I think it'd look better if it had sleeves (possibly armored, but just an undershirt would be fine).

I'm definitely going to have to work on my male character-making skills. Although if that fails I do have a male companion who I could convince to wear it :P
Armor looks awesome :goodjob:

To me it's the legs. The armor over the knees, it's similar to the same part on the Chinese Stealth Suit. The rest, though, I can only compare to the combat ranger armor as I have no idea what game/character/person they're all talking about in the previous posts.

As far as the male character bit goes... something tells me that that suit of armor would work just fine on a female, too. It's a hard, most-likely-poly-carbonate-and-ceramic armor plated suit for Crowd Control... most likely used during the food shortage riots and anti-war protests that turned violent. I doubt they were made in any other shape than 'one-size-fits-all'. Even still, who knows... maybe if there was enough begging and pleading we could get someone to make a variant usable with female characters?

Meh.

And I -do- finally see what was being said about the knees being similar to the stealth suit. I guess I wasn't really paying much attention, there... but yeah... I can see why someone might say that.

Anyway, the armour looks great Geonox. Is it possible you will make a worn version as well? Too me it seems a bit weird to have squeaky clean armour in Fallout, but that is just personal taste I guess.

That looks amazing, Geonox. :)

I really liked the look of the riot armour part of the NCR Ranger Combat Armour, and was disappointed that the (hypothetical) rest of it was covered/replaced by a duster and jeans. So I'm very much looking forward to this.

Actually the first thing that sprang to mind when I saw this thread was "I might have to make a http://www.google.com.au/images?hl=en&q=chest%20rig&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&biw=1680&bih=950 that fits that armour". Not as part of the armour itself, but as an add-on clothing item; like this http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34854 for example. Of course, if you were to do it yourself as part of this mod, I certainly wouldn't complain. ;) Feel free to use stuff from http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=36152 for it, if you'd like. I believe AlexScorpion's MGS4-inspired sneaking suit - which includes a chest rig - was released as a resource somewhere too...

I'll admit, if at all possible I'd go for a stripeless version of this.

And it is truly, mindblowingly awesome. Exactly what I'd expect to be hidden under the other parts of that coat, and cool as hell to boot. Looks really like a protagonist hero armorset!

Ok first off; Thanks guys for all your comments and suggestions, there are defenitely a few things that I'm going to look into :)!

Still, the armor is VERY nice, but for some reason it looks tad too futuristic for a simple police riot armor. More like a Combat Armor mk. V
Say, would it be possible to keep just the armored kneepads and boots with the armor and just have ... normal grunt pants with 'em?

I know I was afraid it looked a little to advanced for riot armor. But I took a lot of inspiration from real riot police suits and they all kind of look like that but idk it's not too much work to remove the upperleg armor and replace it with the grunt pants. Actually it was one of my first ideas but I tried to avoid the grunt pants since I notice I've been using them in all of my mods so far. Anyways first I want to get the normal version to work and then I'll see if I have some time to replace the pants. I also still have to release the hair meshes everybody is begging me for lol.

Yeah that's kinda what the stripe is for so I'll look into different colors, it's just one color that I have to change so it shouldn't be too much work...

This armor looks awesome. Totally cool. When you release it, could you include the non-weathered textures as well in the download? Also, I think it'd look better if it had sleeves (possibly armored, but just an undershirt would be fine).

Yep the armor will have two different textures, a clean one and a weathered one. I'm still not sure what to do with the arms tho. I actually want to add armor/sleeves but I also think it would look nice without it. But it might look a little out of place since the rest of the body is fully armored :). But now that I'm looking at it I guess I'll add some armor on the arms as well.

Soooo....lol I pretty much finished the legs today and the rest of the armor. I noticed that there are a few uvmap glitches that need to be fixed but the armor is like 90% done apart from the forearms. Hopefully I can finish the forearms tonight or tomorrow so I can start weightpainting. I hope everything will go right since I just found out that my old computer, which had a proper working version of blender installed, mysteriously broke down last night lol. It's been crashing almost every month since this summer but it seems that it's dead for good right now. :brokencomputer: . However I found out that blender "seems" to be working again on this computer [64x windows 7] so hopefully I can also get the job done on this one.

Anyways! Here's a final screenshot of the armor so far, I also posted a second one where I removed the red parts so you can kind of get the idea.
But don't worry I'll release a non colored version and a colored version...

Will the stripes glow? I'm not fussed either way, just wondering :)
Still looks good!

In regards to a female version, hopefully not. I won't be asking for one :) Not everything has to have a female version. Many female armors and clothing are never made in a male version. Suggestions are usually met with flaming and hate directed at the poster. Only one modder used to do those conversions but she's no longer modding Fallout. There seemed to be only a small percentage of appreciative users. Unfortunately.
Some armors, like this one, would look just fine on a female character anyway, like you said. One size fits all. Isn't the NCR trooper armor like that? I don't wear faction armor so can't really remember if it looks different for each gender or not

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2800/4150923608_d2d25b97b4_o.jpg, guy in the centre.

Oh of course! I never played it, but had that armor (and the one on the left) in FO3.
But I don't think I'm really supposed to say that (I know I'm not allowed to show screenshots)

In response to the claims that the armor looks too futuristic for police riot armor... do remember that this thing would have been designed in the 2050's to 2060's amidst the largest outburst of civil distress since the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950's. This is precisely the futuristic 'combat armor' I would expect to see our boys in blue wearing as they charge in with their bean-bag shotguns and tear-gas rifles and... dare I say... >.> ... riot shields?

Oh... now I want a riot shield... T_T

Anyways, I love it. I love the legs... I love the texture (I'm sure I'll love them both)... I love everything about it. I especially love that, as long as you find something suitable to do with the sleeves of this thing, it could very -easily- be unisix... just like standard Combat Armor (what with it essentially being Civilian-grade Combat Armor, and all)... and therefore both my male and female characters could walk around decked out like the SWAT team from hell.

Ooh... that's what's missing... SWAT gear...

SWAT gear and Riot Shields... someone should get on those...

@ MystykStar:I know there are already a lot of awesome custom female armors/clothes out there. And usually they are also "women only" so I think it would be nice for a change to have a male only suit. :)! Besides that if I want to make a proper female version of this armor I basically have to start from scratch again. Right now I still have 2 days off so my time is also limited.

I already have some color requests and I still have to make a weathered version of this armor. If I'm also going to include a female version it's going to take me forever to finish this mod. And like I always say modding should be fun. That's why as a modder I usually don't do requests. Cos in the end I get so many request that it starts to feel like doing homework lol. So just in general dont get your hopes up people for a female version :)!

Awesome job with this one... anyway about the female version, wouldn't it be possible to just use the male version, like open it via 3dsmax and also import a 'female body' as reference/paperdoll mesh then just adjust, i'm guessing, the waist and chest area, maybe the arms and legs could also be adjusted to fit the female body mesh better? It doesn't even have to have new texture, as long as adjustments are very minor, shouldn't have problem with stretching or anything. Still, your call though.

If Geo doesn't, I certainly could. I know my way around mesh conforming.

If he based it off the unremarkable near-perfect grid chest piece that the vanilla ranger armor, it may take a bit longer, because some extra geometry would need to be added to properly make room in the bust.
