Retexture

Post » Sun Apr 13, 2014 10:14 am

I've got a lways a strange doubt about retexture. Let's take Lush & gaudy floriana. If I got some texture replacer, should I install Lush first or it after? Because Lush gaudy touches trees, so I wonder if he also change the vanilla "assets" so basically the texture replacer will ruin everything.
The texture replacer I wish to add is Tree bark hd, improved trees & flora 1 +2 etc.

The way I understand it works, is, you should install the mod you want to win last. I haven't tried tree bark HD yet, but have tried both Mikal's "Improved" series and L&G FG. Both modify the tree textures, and while there's some overlap, there are some things one modifies that the other doesn't. In fact Brittainy advises to use IT&F "under" FG. My advice would be to use Wrye Bash to install texture replacers, as that way you can see what is being overwritten with what, and you cna easily change install orders and anneal to try different textures.

I use the http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/19337/? to compare different packs and decide which goes where. (Careful when looking at plants or other items that use alpha channels, since alpha is off by default, making some good textures look worse than vanilla unless you toggle alpha.) You must also allow for color and contrast differences across your monitor/lcd, which could make a mod on one side look falsely better than another (just switch order of viewing if in doubt and see if the better one looks good no matter where it is on the screen).

Generally speaking, though, the installer tab in Wrye Bash is where I establish texture and mesh hierarchy, and the mods tab is for load order and bash patching. The two are completely different, so you can usually place replacer packs strategically to get what you want, regardless of esp load order. Before delving into detailed textures or comparisons, I place large packs high (low number) in the installer tab, just after vanilla oblivion bsa replacers and main patches, and then progress to ever more specialized replacers. These all come before "play" mods and nature/weather overhauls, allowing the latter to overwrite the earlier textures and "insist" on their own styles. If I like a texture pack more than a mod's own graphics, I'll replace the ones in the mod directly in a new BAIN so they do not overwrite my favs. So, say, a nature-oriented overhaul may use plant graphics from my preferred replacer mod in that area, or B&M the fire textures from my favorite replacer of those.

No reason one cannot also mix the order any old way in the installer tab, ordering some mods before replacers, and others after. But that for me is confusing at times, so I keep a strict hierarchy for sake of ease. Hard part, really, is figuring out your preferences, and so far the linked tool is the best way I've found to do it in an orderly fashion. Pain in the hind quarters to actually do, however, so I only spend time comparing major stuff and generally trust my specialized replacers to be better than generic packs.

So basically, installing always the graphic first, then the other mods to be 100% sure you are getting what you wish.

For Hlafordlaes: I read somewhere that you are going to compare texture packs one by one, so I ask you to release a guide someday of your own personal preferite texture mods.

Wel... It really depends on what *you* want. For instance, I want FG's trees, while leaving ITF to cover anything FG "misses", so I install ITF first, then allow FG to overwrite IFT's files. And as Hlafordlaes says, it's usually recommeded to start with "large" texture replacers like Qarl's or Vibrant Textures, and work "downwards" to more specialized replacers, that way you can assure that you will "cover" the maximum amount of textures possible.

I would certainly be interested as well! While I think most people already know the "big" ones (QTP3) I'm always interested in hearing of other's peoples choices and why they like them, even if I personally might not. I just found out Snus' ambience replacers, and I'm going to give it a go with the utility Hlafordales linked to compare it with QTP and Vibrant, which are the 2 other "big" replacers I've considered.

I used to keep my BAIN packages all named the same as the tesnexus downloads, so I could refer to the reference numbers and so on, but not only do links on tesnexus keep changing, but I now name my files with extras that help me remember what I've done to the poor things. I used to include a "BAIN" label in the filenames back in the day, but since I use Wrye Bash exclusively, that's redundant.

All this in the way of saying I can't easily give you proper mod names nor links, so what I can offer is a listing of my Installers tab. Most stuff should be fairly recognizable and searchable on tesnexus. Bear in mind I am in the midst of mucking around, but this install works fine at the moment if I go into the game.

Note that I have gone mad with all the nVidia patches, and use the Bash patch option and the Mods tab options, all to get away from black screens. It seems to work.

As for QTP3: In the end I get fed up with so many things to patch QTP3 that I made a BAIN package with all the versions I play around with:

Spoiler
Package Structure:
00 Core - QTP 3.0 Vanilla & 3.1 & TRTF & UOP32 Patches
00 Core - QTP 3.1 Redimized - Hand Optimized & TRTF & UOP32 Patches
01 +QTP3 Reduced - Base (Lite)
02 +QTP3 Reduced - Some More (Lite2)
03 +QTP3 Reduced - Regular
04 +QTP3 Reduced - Max
05 QTP3 Custom Textures - Beach
06 QTP3 Custom Textures - Roads
07 QTP3 Custom Textures - Rocks_Forest
08 QTP3 Custom Textures - Rocks_General
10 Bomret's SI Texture Pack
20 Detailed Terrain - Core Oblivion (&Shader Patch)
21 Detailed Terrain - SI
22 Detailed Terrain - UL
23 Detailed Terrain - Hi-Res Road Texture

*TRTF refers to a transparency fix, for a rock or something. Found by searching tesnexus for QTP3. UOP32 is the Unofficial Oblivion Compatibility patch.
+The plus '+' sign in a subpackage name indicates to me that a subpackage is cumulative and requires those before it. A handy convention for those as forgetful as I am.
