I saw Naked Lunch when I was 10...don't really remember it much.
I would say to me classics predate 1989...which reminds me of Runaway which was supposed to be what Terminator was..

all of the Spaghetti westerns.

Fistful of dollars
The good the bad and the ugly
For a few more dollars.

There all really good.

Great era/genre of movie making right there, I liken those movies to alot of Samurai films.

Oh yea that reminds me, the entire http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0227912/

There is a condensed and a longer mini series version. Go for the mini series in its entirety. Truly an epic. And those battle scenes are just amazing! :toughninja:

Just watched this one randomly last night.

From the director of the Exorcist and Blue Chips. ( just thought it was funny that it is the same director. :))

Is http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076740/!

Not an occult film as the title implies, but a thriller about 4 anti-hero-ish guys running nitroglycerin across Venezuela to put out an oil rig fire. Staring Roy Scheider of Sea Quest fame.

Surprisingly compelling.

Some trivia: I read at the time that it's a remake of the French film "Wages of Fear". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wages_of_Fear

actually I'd recommend that people stay the [censored] away from these so called 'classics'. Most of them are crap. Old Classics != Good movies

Just take the Godfather trilogy for example, it was brilliant back when it was released. Not today, it doesn't live up to the reputation, not by a long shot. Year of so called reviews and discussions about the trilogy have completely ruined it by shoving the words "IT'S THE BEST TRILOGY EVER" down our throats.

LOL, no. Have to disagree there.

Check out some obscure classics like:

The Man Who Would Be King

Little Big Man

Dillinger

Being There

Papillon

Wag The Dog (not too old)

One, Two, Three

Amadeus (Not really obscure, but alot have never seen this movie. Milos best work)

etc.

Birth of a nation

Amazing work of cinema for the time. You see stuff made 20 years after it that doesn't reach the same quality.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975)
Apocalypse Now (1979)
Jason and the Argonauts (1963)
Harold and Maude (1971)
Clash of the Titans (1981)
Conan the Barbarian (1982)
Conan the Destroyer (1984)
Masters of the Universe (1987)

Masters of the Universe is actually a pretty terrible movie, but I like it because it's campy.

Conan the Barbarian is one of my favs of all time so many good scenes. And the sound track is so good by Porus Basil, I think.

Conan the Destroyer, on the other hand is such a steaming pile of crap.

Fun facts:
The Conan movie series was orginaly slated to be an on going epic, something similar to the Bond films. (info from the extras on the collector's dvd)

Gerry Lopez is better known as a pro surfer but played the roll Subotai, the archer rouge type in Conan the Barbarian.

Robert E. Howard, the creator of Conan, was pen pals w/ HP Lovecraft and is credited w/ creating the sword n sorcery genre. At roughly the same time I believe Tolkien was creating his world of high fantasy as well. Alot of people say he was pretty crazy too. But hey, who's not? :)

Conan the Destroyer is entertaining if you don't take it seriously.

ya I was being harsh. It is just going from the serious atmosphere of Barbarian to the reader's digest version in Destroyer, was so jarring.

Wilt Chamberlin and grace jones are tight though :)

I was gonna quote all the movies I saw that I liked but there are just too many. So I'm gonna stick with saying:

The Man Who Would Be King
Blade Runner
The Man with No Name trilogy
The Outlaw Josey Wales
Jeremiah Johnson
Dr. Strangelove

Probably a lot more that I'm forgetting, but that's good enough for now.

One, Two, Three
snip

etc.

Whoa!

I thought I was the only one on earth still alive who saw that! The only caveat to this one is that you' better have your listening ears on...it's a mile a minute banter :)

As for a classic that I haven't mentioned in a while, how about The Longest Day? That film can truly b called epic.

But, to me, I think retro is now the 80's, so here's a link to some goodies (subjective) from then...

*blinks* Well its interesting to see such a long thread sparked off my nativity *blinks* I'm going to have to look through some of these movies (after I get my hands one the Dark Crystal and Labyrinth) Some of these really seem really unique and something 'new' is always interesting

PS- thanks Zak for calling me out :P

If early 80s is retro now, then Scarface and Road Warrior are good. Of course, since they're so popular, I imagine most of you have seen them.
