Retrying oblivion.

I had this game a few years ago and completed the main quest but due to the many shortcomings didn't find it very playable. Now it's been a few years and there are about a million mods released for the game I've decided to try it again. The main issues I had with the game were the scaling system making the game harder as you levelled and the combat being rather mediocre, especially the lack of violence/gore compared to other games. Are there any mods which specifically address these issues?

EDIT: And I can fully understand wanting to quit after playing the horrible main quest. Did you try any of the other quest lines like Dark Brotherhood, Thieves Guild, etc.?

Thanks for the links.

I never really got to any of the good quests, just some mages guild stuff.

Typical that now I've downloaded oblivion I can't download anything from tesnexus...

Is there some kind of UI overhaul? A quck ctrl+f of that list doesn't show me anything. That was the other thing that infuriated me, considering Morrowind had a very PC friendly interface I was hugely dissapointed with the seemingly console oriented UI that Oblivion used.

Try DarN or DarkUI'd DarN. If you like Morrowind's inventory, you could try wz_Inventory.

Every time I try to activate the Darnified UI mod it says that the C# script failed to compile. Running the game like that results in a messed up UI.

Sounds like you mightn't have all the dot net files/updates you need. Though that is only a "partly educated guess". :D

Check the latest Oblivion Mod Manager (OBMM) thread, maybe? Or even just the Nexus page for it. They should have the info required.

edit: For example, http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2097.

Ok, I've got QT3 and the SI texture pack which look wonderful, but for some reason mods like, "Improved Fruits, Vegetables and Meats" aren't showing up in the game, I've created an omod file and activated them and then performed archive invalidation but they still look terrible, any ideas?

Looks like I was using the wrong type of invalidation, redirection as opposed to alteration, works fine now though. Is there a mod to make decent weapons available from the start of the game from merchants? It seems as though the thief class is kind of useless with nothing worth stealing and merchants psychically knowing that generic items have been stolen.

I recently restarted Oblivion from scratch too.
Decent weapons from start, from merchants... Depends on what you play. I personally have never played Vanilla. I watched someone play the xbox version though... But even in FCOM (which is a combination of several overhauls) merchants don't have what I'd personally call decent, at any time in the game. Best stuff is found, decent stuff is also found.
But I figured it annoying and installed this one: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=26490 which adds decent mid-range (for FCOM at least) weapons to the merchant in anvil. They're very detailed, cut my FPS by -15 when looking at my dude.

There are other weapon and armour mods that add the items straight onto the merchants. Look around.

I never played a thief so no idea how to improve on that
