Return of Greater and Lesser Power?

Post » Wed Mar 09, 2011 7:09 am

while i know we'll have cool dragon powers in the game, i hope "greater power" returns. those spells you can cast only once a day. if they do decide to bring it back, i also would like the powers to be more unique as well. of course my uncreative mind can't think of any examples for now, but if i do think of something i'll post it here. or you guys can brainstorm about it

The racial abilities helped to enrich the atmosphere and enhance the depth of each character. I hope to see both lesser and greater powers return in Skyrim.

I assume so. Night eye is a good lesser power to have as a khajiit :D. At least in Morrowind where it wasn't blue night vision goggles. :stare:

Eww, 1 day cooldowns? Who actually likes that?

I swear, I've used the eye of fear Kahjiit power twice, and the summon ghost power for the Dunmer once. And and I played on both characters for more than 200 hours...

So no to greater powers, I prefer a cooldown of a few minutes.

I believe they still in game, tied to perks system as well as birth signs.

I don't care if they are creative or original or not, I love doomstones, and I hope Skyrim has something similar. The odd power or two as a reward for exploring the back roads of the province, definitely. Sincerely hope stuff like the Pilgrim's Grace and Kayleen's tombstone are not completely replaced by Thu'um.

I agree with the friendly bear, I never used them for some reason I was always too afraid to use it because I thought I might need it later but I never used it at all. I much prefer a cool-down time of a few minutes (real time)

I like them.
They are more than the daily power you get.
They help in defining your character, whether it's from race traits or birth signs.
Good for back story development as well.

little to no cooldown for generic spells? sure. huge stamina/mana cost to cast something powerful? certain death approaches, and there's only one ability that can save you but you shouldn't rely on it all the time so it has a long cooldown? that's fine with me too.

maybe some greater powers can just be passive. but if something is of great power, i think it makes sense if there's a huge cooldown. and since you don't use greater powers, then you don't have to worry about cooldowns.

The biggest problem for me was (like TheFriendlyBear above) the cooldown. Not that it doesn't make sense, but knowing that I couldn't use my power more than once a day meant that I pretty much never used it. Well, as a Dunmer I did summon my ancestral ghost on a few occasions, like when I knew I was going into a big fight and that would probably be the most action I saw that day, but these occasions were rare compared to how many in-game days I actually played.

Which isn't to say that I don't think the powers are cool, just that the limits on their usage made them not as practical for me when I had other options available.

That's the exact delima I faced.

I mean, every 24 minutes I can fear someone for 8 seconds as a Kahjiit? And yet, I can create spells that are 10 times better and I can cast them at free will? Yeah, 1 day cooldowns need to go.

hmm that sounds reasonable enough. according to some of the other posters, it does sound like it's coming back, so hopefully they improved on it or given incentives for people like you to use your greater power.
