Return to sender bug -- can't finish the quest

SPOILER WARNING
.
.

I just ran into this bug described below (from the New Vegas wikia site):

"There is currently a bug where Hanlon does not commit suicide after you tell him you will turn him in. Even after waiting, the quest does not advance. He just sits in his office behind a locked door. Verified on XBOX 360 and PS3. Also verified on PC (18/12/2010). On the PC you can (sort of) fix this script error with the console command setstage 14f3b1 100. This will at least set the quest to completed and Hanlon will just wander off to his room. This glitch can sometimes be fixed by walking outside through the main entrance and walking back in, at that point you should hear a gunshot."

I'm running the PC version. Leaving the area and coming back didn't do the trick, and using the console is just a workaround that in fact solves nothing.

I can agree not to tell anyone about his actions and finish the quest this way, but hey, that is NOT what I want to do. And all in all, I want his "ranger sequoia" revolver.

I tried doing the following: agree with him and follow him outside in order to kill him when nobody is watching, but the minute he passes the front door he's gone. And shooting him down right there behind his desk feels absolutely unrealistic, since everybody saw us entering the room.

So, is there a fix out there already? Such a major let down finishing the quest in a way you don't want...

Thanks in advance.

Edit: and the problem is NOT that he is stuck behind his desk like I read here and there: I just used the console to disable the desk prior to talking to him and to no avail

I was just doing this quest but wanted the ending where he doesn't commit suicide and learned I just went too soon. I'll go back later after doing Caesar in.

You can't pickpocket the weapon from him?

This might not help you but you could try using a stealth boy and reverse pickpocket some C4 onto him. Wait until he's supposed to kill himself and then detonate the C4. That will at least kill him for you and allow you to loot him and if you're under a stealth boy you'll probably not be seen. This also assumes that the scripted door locking/unlocking when he makes his little speech and then eats his gun actually works as well. If that fails and you REALLY want that gun, well there's always TCL and/or Disable again. :whistling:

This whole ending section for this quest is all a heavily scripted sequence however, so it might not fix your issue as he doesn't actually shoot himself and die from the bullet damage, he's just scripted to be killed and if the script never fires (heh) in the first place and gets stuck somewhere along the line... Worth a try in any case. Good luck.

Thank you both for your answers.

Nothing worked, unfortunately.

I had to agree with the NPC, even if I didn't want to do so.

And right after that I found another quest-breaking bug: a ranger told me to pass on his message to someone and come back with the answer, but when talking to this someone there was no option available in the dialogue.

You know, I am completely baffled by the incompetence of Obsidian. And to think that I was fiercely defending them by the time the game was launched... but the thing is, there are simply too much bugs and glitches for us to pretend they are not there or that they don't matter -- an overwhelming lot of them.

And the thing is: they are, in their majority, tremendous immersion-breakers, like someone riding an invisible horse right in the middle of a desk, or typing at an invisible typewriter when talking to you.

Sometimes we get ridiculous pictures like this one here: http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/6632/falloutnv20110119.jpg.

Well, the thing is: because of a deadline or not, the fact is that we got a game that still is on beta stage. We are paying beta testers.

Not cool.

Well, I'm not getting svcked into the not ready for prime time argument...

Your screenie, however is a classic. it's made even better by the dialog. I, literally, would have paid for that to happen to me.

I am having a difficult time typing I am still laughing so hard! Personally, I hope these little divertissemants never disappear.

I've never come across this bug and I'm on 360, so I guess I can't help you.

I completed the quest normally twice though, with him committing suicide only after I got bored and went looking around the building, him only killing himself when I was looking around upstairs. Happened twice that way.
