Return of the named npcs?

Post » Fri Jan 15, 2010 1:03 am

I am sure that some of you have played Fallout 3 and so on. Now I am also sure you took note on how they did not have many named npcs in the towns.

They replaced the person's named with a generic "(Insert city/town name) Citizen."

So you think just cause it is the Elder Scrolls series they will have most people named or what?

Though really, in Daggerfall they had over a hundred thousand npcs and all of them had names. I think a name generator is no problem.

The last two games had almost nothing but named characters. I think Beth likes having TES feel like its filled with individuals. Also, having dozens of people who just brush off someone trying to talk to them would be kind of annoying.

So yes I think that the NPC will be named again.

I found some excellent names here in the forums for NPC's:

- Very Evil Dude of Darkness;
- Charles The Plant (no, really :))
- Skoomaholic Anonymous
- Naked And Screaming

Names are usually not generic in TES. Trust me, NPC's will have names unless they are not that important, "vampires, murderers, guards, etc.)

Of course. People need to stop thinking this game will be like fallout. IT IS AN ELDER SCROLLS GAME NOT FALLOUT.

A simple name generator involving limitations for race/gender would be perfect.

You dont wanna see a female argonian named Mary Blah.

More NPCs, bigger towns. Hopefully the new engine can actually run a few dozen NPCs in the same cell without going into a lag-o-thon

Seing as many of the NPCs even in Oblivion were unnecessary for anything other than mood, yes. Hopefully they'll be able to make a better generator than in Daggerfall, where everyone (okay, there weren't really NPC races, but still) was called something like "Eckbar Buckington" or something... But more NPCs mean bigger cities! I like bigger cities!

Can't tell for sure, but he was dating Suzie Weed, till Anatolia Skoomanova stepped in.

Guess what? Fallout is NOT an Elder Scrolls game.
So when you say a "return of named NPCs" you make no sense.

Neat, hey?

What we need are bigger, more believable towns. I really couldn't care less for random NPCs with no dialogue and houses with no interiors. Like what the town mod did with oblivion, except even on a bigger scale. Can't remember the name of the mod, it's been a while. Keep it to 50 or less real NPCs in towns with their own homes and introductions, possibly quests...randomly generate another 200...
Numbers are just estimates, 200 might be way too much seeing how many NPCs the oblivion engine handled (remembers lame 10v10 bar brawl that the fate of Tamriel relied on :ermm: ). Yeah...they better do something about that.

I think it would be cool to have all initial NCs be named by the devs but also have it where any new NPC made during the corse of the game(perhaps through children or just being generated to fulfill a role of some form) could be named by a generator. So maybe if you kill someone needed for a quest another will be created somehow and given some little back story as to how they came in to fill that spot.

It wouldn't work for the timeline, most likely, but Jobasha traveling to Skyrim would be epic. :D

the game series does not go

arena
daggerfall
morrowind
oblivion
fall out 3
skyrim

fall out is not part of the elderscrolls series and named NPCs will not "return" they will continue to be in the games.
