Returning to Oblivion

Post » Tue Mar 02, 2010 8:47 am

Alright then, this is my first post in the Elder Scrolls section of this site.

It's been close(if not more) to a year since I traded in my copy of Oblivion(take note that I play on the PS3 so mods to the game mean nothing to me) and I'm trying to figure out if it is worth me going to the nearest Gamestop to buy another copy.

When I first got the game I couldn't keep myself from starting a new character every other day, leaving an unimaginable amount of quests incomplete.
Later when I was finally able to commit myself to a single character I couldn't stick to the main quests.

What I'm trying to figure out is

-are the main story quests worth buying the game to play again?
-is it worth going through the trouble of making a heavy armored thief/archer with a touch of magic(for those damned will-of-the-wisps) worth the trouble?

Also take note that I had tons of fun but grew bored after being unable to find anymore optional quests and just couldn't commit myself to doing the main quests.

And one last bit. If I should go out and buy another copy for the PS3(don't have PC that can handle any games) is their a copy that has both DLC included?

I would buy the GOTY edition since it comes with SI and KOTN I believe and its cheaper than buying all seperate. Also try roleplaying, it will make the game way more fun even if you finish a lot of the quests.

Now that I have had a taste of some great mods that are available for PC I can't imagine ever going back to playing vanilla Oblivion. It would be so boring.... maybe if you can get it like really really cheap it might be worth it, but otherwise save for something else, unless you can get it on the PC.

You gotta remember that I've never played Oblivion modded, so I wouldn't know the difference

Only problem there is the PS3 version of GOTY has the Vampire bug and the only way around it is to use a non GOTY copy to rid yourself of vampirism -- SO if he does get the GOTY version he needs to be sure never to become a vamp unless he wants to stay one the rest of the game !!

Damn, guess im getting the copy that only has the KOTN DLC

With my original copy I would often go into places with alot of vamps and end up gettin the disease...would always make sure I had alot of stuff to get the cure so that it was just a quick visit and i was cured.

You have 72 hours to cure yourself don't you I don't think it should be that big of a problem. I play on 360 so I didn't know about the PS3 bug sorry.

Oh that's right....chapel.

I remember the real reason for me always turning into a vampire.

I would forget I had contracted the disease, level up, take a nap...wake up.... "damnit!"

I think you just need to drink a cure desease potion (or cast a spell) in the first 72 to be rid of the desease that causes vampirism.

Or just eat Mandrake Root, which is lighter than most cure disease potions, and far cheaper.

Praying doesn't work if you have a bounty on your head or if you're infamy is too high, i.e. higher then your fame (I think, it's been a couple of months since I played, but I'm fairly sure)
*checks UESPWiki, which confirms it.*

I believe one of the plugins adds an altar for infamous people. And you should pay your bounties off haha. Also I would think infamous characters with bounties on their head would be a bit more apt to being a vampire than others who have a high fame and no bounties on their head.

I was just pointing out that praying isn't always an option. It is generally the best option though, where available. I always carry a potion or two of cure disease, and the components for a few more, for when it's not. I hate accidentally becoming a vampire.

Haha ya I know. I've never tried being a vampire and have no desire to. I couldn't deal with the drawbacks to it and I can resist paralysis with the Ring of Vitality.

Ask yourself if its worth the money, when there will be newer games you have not already traded in before first imo.
Playing just the quests and making checklists put me off the game, untill I started just mucking around and creating stuff to do outside of side and main quests.
So if you think you're going to get bored remembering all the stuff you've already done, I would hold off untill you're sure and looking forward to playing the game..
As there have been many times I've started an old game I still own, and gotten to a point where I remember why I quit in the first place, plus you can allways buy later and most likely cheaper too.

But that mod as well is not available on the PS3 !! (it only has KOTN and SI ) -- which is why you cant just use it to cure the vampirism to get past the bug like you can on the PC Or 360 either !

The best advice i've seen yet

Although I'm not worried about money or newer games like this

The GOTY edition is just over $20 dollars(Thats me weeding the flower bed in 15 min cus mum just loves having a flowerbed without weeds)
I'm not to interested in any of the other games similar to Oblivion(DAO seems like it forces you to play through the story)
At the time that I did have Oblivion I also had a few other games that I was occupied with. In the end I only had a few hours on Oblivion and 30+ hours on the other games when i traded them all in.

At the time that I did have the game, it was just that, me and the game. I didn't know about these forums or anything. If I made a huge accomplishment(or seemingly) I had no one to gloat to(lol)

It sounds like i'm set on getting the game but i'm still uncertain.
