Reusing older Assets- Good or bad?

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 3:48 am

From what we've seen of FO4's teaser, it does look like they're reusing at least some assets from Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas.

Just wanted to get an opinion if this is a good thing or a bad thing. Is it OK to reuse old assets if they're still compatable and it makes sense, or should they just wipe the slate clean and remake everything?

Sure, in some cases, update the graphics etc. I wish they would have updated the running animations though, having people jogging up the hill to get away from the nuke looked weird.

It didn't look to me like they reused any assets, aside from maybe a poster in the very back of the Memory Den shot. Assets based off of the same concepts, absolutely, but Bethesda generally starts from scratch with every game.

If this was a last gen game they could get away with it.

But re-using assets in a gen leap and after 7 years from the last title is just lazy.

I think the new securitron looks fantastic, thats a great example of properly reusing assets IMO

It would keep things consistent. I'd prefer them to reuse assets than to have something jarringly different pop up.

Maybe cuts back on development time so they can add new things?

If it saves money so they an invest in other features, no problem.

As was said earlier, I didn't see very much if anything that was outright re-used from previous games. Were certain things similar/inspired by objects and ideas from earlier games? Quite obviously yes, but there is nothing wrong with that when a game is an entry in a long standing franchise. Call backs and other things that echo earlier games is practically an expected part of being in such a series.

One of my favorite games of all time is Majora's Mask, which reuses a bunch of character models from Ocarina of Time. I think, despite reusing assets and only having about a year or two of development, Majora's Mask is my favorite Legend of Zelda game (it's constantly duking it out with Wind Waker). So, no. I don't think reusing assets is inherently a bad thing.

Then again, it's not inherently a good thing either.

You mean protectron? Unless a securitron was hidden somewhere and I missed it.

Well the old vehicles I don't really have a problem with being reused., along with electronics and furnatures although new ones would be nice.

hopefully if they dont have a "prewar" act or recreation in game I do hope they have the assets in Geck

Same. Plus, I don't think that counts anyway. Remodeling a Protectron wouldn't fit my definition of reusing an asset. Copy-pasting the old model into Fallout 4 is what I'd call reusing an asset.

I say it's a good thing. That means there's less time spent remaking those assets and more time and money to put elsewhere!

It's good, in my opinion, I really don't see a problem. The game is set in the same universe, therefore we should expect to see the same things/assets used otherwise it would feel like a totally different world, and game. That goes for everything from tin cans on the ground, to the graphics or game engine used, all within reason, but no crazy differences in assets for the sake of being 'new'. This is not a modern remake/update/reboot to the Fallout universe; not everything should be brand new for the sake of being new or different to previous Bethesda games in the Fallout franchise.
