revamped UMBRA...

Post » Sat Oct 16, 2010 7:52 am

It would be cool if long time wielders of umbra slowly transformed into a gangly, unholy type of creature.

make the sword svck the users soul over time.

think raziel from the soul reaver series.

eventually you would turn into a wraith.

perhaps involve a cure quest too.

Well isn't the wielder of Umbra supposed to become Umbra? That's how it came across in Morrowind and Oblivion when I found the sword randomly. The user always seemed to be consumed by the dangerous power of the sword itself. Assuming the sword has such parasitic consequences, I would like to see the sword consuming the player somehow. Kind of like how when the player became addicted to that one substance in Shivering Isles and had to consume it if they wanted to live.

@ShampooLord - You can more or less count on it being in the game. Umbra always comes back in TES.

Hmmm, I don't like this idea. Umbra has an interesting history behind it, and I see no reason to change it.

So then it is just some random easter egg BGS keeps putting in every TES then?

Hopefully not the sword is very overrated anyway.

It did have some effects on the wielder psychologically. Perhaps it didn't literally svck out their soul, but looking at both Umbras from Morrowind and Oblivion, it seemed it dominated their lives at least. The former wanted nothing more than to die by the hand of the player after wreaking so much destruction, and the latter went into hiding so that she could prevent taking more lives with the sword.

I'm pretty sure there's something in the book that makes the inclusion of Umbra unlikely.

The original Umbra has actually escaped, if I remember correctly.

well Umbra (in Oblivion) was all messed up because she found the sword and started killing a lot, but she regretted everything an went into hiding

Yeah, it's highly unlikely at this point in time. Though the next book could change that, but as of now unlikely.

Exactly. It might just be that the power of using the sword corrupts the bearer, but it's always seemed to me like there's been some magical influence over them, too.

The original Umbra has actually escaped, if I remember correctly.

Was this in one of the books? I'd love to know more about this. Umbra is one of my favourite parts of the game.

Remember that the oblivion gates were closed permanently at the end of Oblivion. I am fairly sure that the current Umbra tossed the sword into a closing oblivion gate.

That would be a really good idea. Lets say you are in a village and you've been hearing rumors of killings that have been going for quite some time and you go and explore the acient tomb and you go to the very heart of the tomb and you find Umbra and he/she just got done killing a prisoner and while Umbra is distracted you kill Umbra and you now got the sword; but all of a sudden you start hearing voices in your head and you are now controlled by Umbra.

You have Umbra taking a part in the Infernal City. In that story Umbra is a person trapped in the sword Umbra by Clavicus Vile. The city Umbriel takes its name and its a soul svcking city too. You could say that Umbra (Person) is the "soul reaver" similar to the LOK series, although he doesnt exhibit any culinary preferences in the book.

Personally i think that this idea would likely infringe some Soul Reaver IP and since I thoroughly enjoyed the whole Soul Reaver arc of Legacy of Kain it would be a little crap to me.

Lets leave the soul eating for the Daedric Princes... and Umbriel

I want to see Umbra's physical manifestation in Skyrim.

He was quite the BAMF in The Infernal City.

You know all these years I've never actually met Umbra in any of the TES games, even though I'm pretty sure the sword/weilder has been in every game so far.
