Review from a Morrowind-Lover

Post » Sun Dec 11, 2011 9:42 pm

Excellent post. I don't know how to hide spoilers so instead I'll use parentheses.

When I had the option to kill (a particular thing) or not, I actually debated - how will (the being who gave me the quest) react? Which choice is better here?

When I made my choice, I was shocked to find that he wasn't disappointed with what I did. It was basically, "Oh, that's ok, at least you (did something").

That was very disappointing. Made me feel like sitting there thinking about it was a waste of time because no matter which I chose I'd get a slap on the back.

So yeah, one big gripe is, like you say, many things turn out the same way whether you take the "good" or "evil" approach.

OP is pretty much spot on.

I really don't like the way this series is headed, and the worst part is that its painfully obvious it is going to keep going down that path. Would you honestly be surprised if ES 6 ended up being nothing more than a glorified God of War clone (but in first person view)?

Considering that Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim are NOTHING like God of War, yes, I would be incredibly shocked if that's what TES 6 amounted to.

I stopped reading as soon as I saw "dumbed down". I can't take any review that uses that term seriously.

I didn't agree with much of what I read up to that point anyways.

Would you prefer if they said homogenization? I think developers get confused on the distinction between homogenization versus streamlining. It's one then when a game is cumbersome and has a lot of fat. When you cut out meat, that is a problem. Skyrim cuts a lot of meat out of previous TES games. I like Skyrim, I just think they went too far with homogenizing and dilution. The removal of Athletics and Acrobatics as skills, that is streamlining. Removing the ability to dodge on combat, that is "dumbing down".

I'll tell you what we really gained: Very lively world, lore is nicely weaved into the world so that its very seamless, and better AI.

However, we lost a lot of good things, but in addition, we also gained a lot of bad things. I do not think an almost purely perk based system is the way to go. It makes me feel like I'm not leveling up my skill to get stronger, but simply to get more perks to do individual things. This is especially apparent while playing a mage. My skill literally has no effect on my spells other than a single thing; magicka, which is easily diminished or removed thanks to %cost reduction enchantments. So all that a mage is left with is leveling their skill purely to get more perks. I feel like I'm grinding experience on World of Warcraft. :sadvaultboy:

Fair enough. I agree with so much of what was posted, but I still find myself enjoying the game. This may or may not be the last TES game that I own. It is certainly the last that I preorder. For all of that, I intend to enjoy this one.

I have pretty solid ideas as to how to mod it to get maximum enjoyment for myself. Once that is done I am quite sure that I will enjoy it more than ever, despite its flaws. I don't know if the next one will be too dumbed down to rescue. This one is not.

Maybe you can add in more things you enjoy?

You can imagine how hard it is to mention every moment you experienced in a game of this size. I'm the first to admit that I left out several things that deserve obvious credit. The dragons are incredible. The sound and music are splendid as usual. The voice acting has improved tremendously (Although often, the face animation can't keep up. This gets a bit weird when the NPC is laughing madly but their lips are tight shut - but meh, maybe in TES VI.) :)

I stopped reading as soon as I saw "dumbed down". I can't take any review that uses that term seriously.

I didn't agree with much of what I read up to that point anyways.

Fair enough - usually, I hate that term as well. It implies that somehow, dumb people would benefit from a lesser experience, and that the target audience itself is stupid. Which is why I used "watered-down" in my conclusion, which I think describes the situation better. Didn't remember to go back and change it in the text as well, but meh. It's a lot of text.

I think someone explained it with this anology very well:
A cake has bread and icing. Skyrim took the cake and made it ALL icing. Like of sweet, tantalizing flavor, but when you dig in, you can't find the moist, delicious center.

totally agree. Bethesda doesn't care though, they're getting lots of COD players to buy skrim.

Someone once said that Morrowind was a trilogy of books while Oblivion was an action packed Hollywood movie. I feel like that accurately captured the essence of the games. I would say that if Morrowind is the LOTR books then Skyrim is the movies. Pretty darn good but still missing that full fleshed out world.

I've never played Morrowind, but I'd like it if someone explained to me how exactly that game was more complex than Skyrim. Can you enumerate the reasons why?

NPCs actually noticed your status
5x more spells and effects
4x more type of monsters (30 in skyrim, 120 in morrowind)
Attributes that effected skilltrees
No Perks
No smithing, enchanting
Mysticism, 1 handed blade, blunt 2 handed blade, blunt

Check the wiki... Just alot more content and alot deeper.

snoreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

I love it when classing yourself as a "morrowind player", this immediately gives you the right to post a new thread about what you think, and everyone should stand up and tip their hat to you.

Skyrim is Skyrim, not Morrowind. It's not meant to be Morrowind dummy. It's the best game we've seen in the series IMHO and it's breaking records as we speak. No one cares that you hate it.

The ones I bolded offer deeper content. However all the other notes you made merely make a game with more numbers with does not equal depth.

It's a series of games that have evolved over time, and many players started playing TES games earlier in the series. It's natural to compare the changes between games and IMO doesn't imply any superiority whatsoever.

Besides, all the cool kids play Dwarf Fortress.

200+ hours in less than a month is, to me, a very unhealthy number of hours to do almost anything. That's 50+ hours per week, or 7+ hours per day (including weekends). That's more than a lot of full-time workers spend at work each week. I think if you do any elective, entertaining activity in that sort of concentration you're bound to bring on early burnout and its associated cynicism.

LOL, disappear. If he writes something stupid he deserves to be called up about it. And he did.

Your review is very good and spot on. I still enjoy the game, as do you after 200 hours, but I hope they take these criticisms seriously for their next installment.

If they fixed the issues you described this game would be nearly flawless.
