Not that it matters in terms of my buying and enjoying the game, but my expectation is that reviewers will ding the game for the graphics not being better and for any bugs they encounter. If the characters and story are better then Fallout 3, I expect the game will get good marks on that side. No one will refer to it as an "expansion."

Wait, wait, wait, the new Deus Ex is an Ubisoft game? Too bad, they're on my no-buy list due to the ridiculous always online, saves only on servers DRM. Oh well, saves me some money, and i didn't like Deus Ex that much anyway... :bolt:

Ubisoft doing it is as false a statement as it being a complete FPS now. I can not say more about the latter, though. :ninja:

I read multiple reviews, not just one, and I don't buy or rent a game based on that either, I watch gameplay videos and previews or read about a game to find out more information, I haven't made a bad buy since Modern Warfare 2 which had a decent enough single player to make up for it. The game was still a pretty big let down though.

Edit: MW2 wasn't that long ago, but I should have said That's the only bad purchase in 10+ years, and it's basically because PC gamers got cheated on that game.

I just remembered this, Fallout 3 got many game of the year awards, and when some reviews like a game, no matter how bad it is it will get a decent-good-great score. So I think FNV will get good scores, which i hope it deserves, not just becuase it is a fallout brand.
But i am certain that everyone on this forum is going to love this game, and milk it for all that it's worth, which hopefully is A LONG time. :fallout:

Pah, critics are lame. Here's my critic:

Morrowind = Awesomness
Oblivion = Awesomeness with better graphics
Fallout = Awesomeness with better graphics and guns
New Vegas = Awesomeness with better graphics and guns and companion wheel and needs and no auto aim and colours and desert...etc.

No matter what critics say, New Vegas will be an awesome game. All Bethesda games are awesome, specially because of their SDK tools.

To bad I life in Europe. Have to wait three more days then U.S Americans... :cryvaultboy:

D'oh! Nope, sorry about that. For whatever reason the preview I read not too long ago said the developer was Eidos Montreal and I somehow read "Ubisoft Montreal," who's been cranking out a lot of games lately. My bad.

Blasphemy! :P I liked the first one a lot. Invisible War wasn't nearly as good.

From what I've read about Human Revolution it sounds interesting. The devs are talking up the effort they put into giving the player the ability to approach situations in creative ways, which was a big part of what made the first Deus Ex fun. Like I said, we'll have to see.

Reviews are stupid anyways.... Gameinformer gave Castlevania: Lord of Shadow a 9!!! A freaking nine. Any real castlevania fan would know that that is rubbish and the game is a mediocre God of War Clone at best. But because it has Castlevania stuck on the cover of the box it wont get below a 7. I thought the game was a 5 at best.

Right, i had heard that myself, just forgotten about it. Eidos is owned by Square-Enix nowadays, isn't it? Their attempt to take bigger part in the western gaming market, i take it.

Blasphemy! :P

Pretty much that, yes. Since the Japanese market is very off track in terms of profits, it's only reasonable that they now follow the lead of other companies. Also means we get snazzy CGI cutscenes that would otherwise not be possible.
But really, I have to say that again, it is no pure FPS. But I still can't tell you more. Just be patient. ^_^

I'm guessing that the average score will be around 8 ±1. They'll complain about some of the glitches and bugs from FO3 not being fixed but the good will likely outweigh the bad.

They have already announced that it doesn't have RPG elements anymore , atleast in the preview I read. Its basically gonna be a shooter with maybe a slight depth or simple level up system :sadvaultboy: Here's to a console Witcher 2 though

I'm guessing the average score around 8.5 (depending on number of bugs & glitches, bad NPC animations due to Gamebryo). On the other side - great story & characters, deep customization and overall amazing gameplay. Players should judge for themselves, but reviews are also important, because they influence game sales.

Where'd you read that? Last I checked, Human Revolution was supposed to be a rather RPG-like game - although a cinematic one, which likely entails some worrying things.

Pfft, next thing you'll be telling me is that Rondo of Blood isn't the best Castlevania game ever made. But I digress.

So, reviews for New Vegas? Chances are, the "smart" reviewers will give it a 9 or 8, saying it improves on the original in many good ways - but not all of them. Meanwhile, the "dumb" reviewers will just say it's Oblivion w/Guns Part II and really buggy. However, despite all this, IGN will give it a 9.

If the new Deus Ex interests, read the http://forums.eidosgames.com/showthread.php?t=86841. I think you may find it, if not thoroughly, at least somewhat comforting. I'm actually very much looking forward to what they come up with it (not because of the shooter gameplay, but because the RPG elements and gameplay possibilities).

On topic. The first http://attackofthefanboy.com/news/fallout-vegas-review/ is out already (quotations because I'm not really sure what it is in the end, but it claims to be a review). Not too good, but then again, after reading I know I can't take it too seriously. (* Spotted at Obsidian Forums)

I think most reviews will be good but have lower scores than what F3 got, even if the review itself will claim that the game is better than F3 was.

It's a bit of an odd situation because, like others have pointed out, Vice City, San Andreas, and the like never really got "targetted" for being just expansions or using the same engine as far as I can recall. But it seems to be a thorn in the side when it comes to New Vegas, it's constantly being pointed out despite the fact that PR have IMO made it pretty clear just what the game is about and what it is.
Perhaps it's just a sign of the times that people want even more pretty graphics nowadays than before. There was never a problem with the infinity engine games or Fallout 2 as I recall. Ah well.

It is 2010, almost 2011, not 1990. The majority of reviews that matter, for games, movies, music, come from your friends, from forums and blogs you read, from the people on your Facebook. I don't think reviewers hold the "make or break" power they once had, they are just one voice among thousands. If a game got a 3 in review, but all my friends were raving about it, I know what I would do...

Someone with malicious intent could argue that those viewpoints are like that because the Fallout 3 gameplay and general design just doesn't deliver the way older GTA games did, or the original 2 Fallouts back then.

A little social experiment I've been wanting to do for a long time.
What do fans who say "I don't care about reviews, and you shouldn't either" say after the reviews come out (and are positive, of course)?

I'd still say "Don't care."

About the first "review" : "Fallout New Vegas' story just never hit home with me the way that Fallout 3's did. Maybe it was the fact that Fallout 3 was my first title in the series..". So, he never played Fallout 1&2 AND he prefers Bethesdas storytelling over Obsidians'. After reading this, I just can't take it seriously. But, I have to admit that mentioned glitches are a bit worrying.

It has begun. The fact that the reviewer liked Fallout 3's story better even though it was broken until the DLC release. Boggles the mind! :bonk:

I don't expect to see as good reviews as FO3 got. It doesn't mean that FONV is not as good (or better) as FO3, but every year standards gets higher.
E.g. because graphic will be pretty much the same - it will draw some negative comments like: "Graphic seems a little outdated" etc.etc... FO3 was a superior game 2008 - but in two years critics expect to see some technical evolution. So they can't give so praising reviews.

For me it is not an absolute requirement - What I have seen so far - I'm sure I will enjoy FONV just as much as I enjoyed FO3 - And that is really all I care

Having not read too much of what's coming -don't want to spoil it for myself :) but FONV sounds like it's a lot like FO3, only with the best mods hard-coded into the game engine (sorry for all you console-only players)

Iron sights
hardcoe mode
improved companions
improved AI scripting
expanded monsters and creature sets
expanded weapons
weapon mods
a true to life copy of http://s633.photobucket.com/albums/uu56/old_andy/?action=view¤t=Whatbuilding.jpg with a post apocalyptic marriage proposal attached [the guy in the front of the picture is me, ahem] :D

uhh.., I hope there's still work for the mods department

I for one would rather a company spend time on the story and quests and land and whatever new buildings rather than build a whole new game from scratch each sequel. Sure, tweak a few things here and there like Obsidian did. However Fallout 3 was a great game, no need to throw it all out for the next sequel. Heck, I could see them doing one or two more games just the same way. Wouldn't that be great, a whole new Fallout Story and Game every 18 to 24 months? Much better than the 4 to 6 year development cycle when doing a new engine.

I know Bethesda is making a new engine for the next TES, perhaps this story can be played on that engine too. However that is lots of development time. In the meantime, give us some more Fallout on this engine after New Vegas.

Spot on CCNA

I would love to see a "cyber punk" Shadowrun (I loved the SNES version) game put on this engine as well. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadowrun_(SNES)
