Revisiting Mariposa Military Base ruins?

Post » Wed Jul 14, 2010 8:44 am

Ok, In one of the Developer Diary's it was said, that we will be revisiting locations and places from the 1st and 2nd Fallout games. Now this is just great news and right away I imagined, that revisiting Mariposa Military Base would be so climatic, after all this location is so important to the "West Coast" Fallout Saga.

What do you think? can we expect it to be present in F:NV ?

I think it might be too far afield but I agree it would be a great location to visit.

Dayglow would be at the top of my list and while it wouldn't actually count as a location from a previous game I'd love to see The Glow as well.

The Mojave wasteland is roughly on the same latitude as Los Angeles (and there's a highway sign pointing to LA), whereas Mariposa is roughly near San Francisco.

It's possible, but I wouldn't put too much faith in it.

It's too bad, but you both seem to be right. Good material for a DLC maybe? Remember, that in FO3 we had to travel by a traincar to The Pitt and that was pretty far away from the Capital Wasteland DC :)
It would be a really good DLC to have a quest to go to the Mariposa Base Ruins and retrieve something for someone (I know I'm talking generally, but it is a great idea for a DLC don't you think ?).

As long as we get a Hollywood DLC with ghoulified child stars* whose pre-war tabloid feud has erupted into all-out war, then hells yeah, a Mariposa DLC would be most welcome. :D

*With voice acting by actual child stars. Macaulay Culkin needs work!

Revisiting locations from F1 and F2 literally though? I thought they meant figuratively through campfire stories.

As for the campfire stories, those probably will apply to FO1 and FO2 NPC's, talking-heads ect.

As for the locations, there is a mention in the Dev Diary, that we will revisit "some" of the locations known from the first two classic FO games.

I agree with traveling out in DLC's such as The Pitt. It was very fun to see how my area was affected by Nuclear devastation. Perhaps traveling more to Cali/Hollywood would be a GREAT idea for a DLC. I have high hopes =]

There is no Hollywood. It's called the Boneyard.

True. But the Boneyard in Fallout 1 is completely devoid of landmarks, outside of the occasional settlement.

All I'm suggesting is that they flesh out the area a bit. :)

Why would we need to go back there?
We've been there in two games.
No need to rehash it.
But I would like to know if Shi ever took control over the place...

God no.
It would be horrible to see them in 3D.
Even more horrible to change it to FPS.
They are classic games that need to stay that way, classic.
Any change to them would be an insult to the franchise. (IMO)

I could be wrong, but isn't New Reno the only Fallout 1/2 location even remotely close to Vegas?

Depends on how the mapped area of New Vegas is placed. If New Vegas was in the middle of the map probably the closest place would be Necropolis or Hub. After that it would be Vault 15 or NCR and after them New Reno and abandoned Broken Hills. But it really depends much on the placing of the area. Also Necropolis is little bit questionable, is it really in Bakersfield or in the location of Fallout 1.

[EDIT]
Oh and getting bit off topic here. I wouldn't see any point going back there, it was destroyed 120 years ago, was excavated by Enclave and gave birth to a new generation of Super Mutants, haven't we seen enough that place. I would expect that it would have been sealed off again and would be a quarantine zone given the history of the place.

What comes to LA, if the place hasn't changed much I see no point in it either. It was described as a vast area of skyscraqer skeletons and dead bodies. Nothing interesting there, if the gangs over there haven't made a lot of changes.

In my opinion Hub would be the most interesting place, since atleast it was a thriving city full of merchants.

I believe you are describing the Fallout MMO that Interplay is working on; to some extent. Let's not talk about that though, or the mod'll close this thread.

I doubt there'd be anything at Mariposa except for maybe a few walls and some untouched robots. Maybe Lieutenant is buried under all of the rubble.

Or the bodies of the enclave in FO2 have decayed leaving Advanced Power Armor for our greedy selves.

Or yet another group of humans like scavengers entered the ruins, got in contact with the F.E.V. and were turned into third generation of Mariposa Super Mutants.....

Or NCR has a permanent quarantine guardpost in front of the ruins that has been sealed off again. Since the second generation Super Mutants have migrated to New Vegas area with Tabitha, it's probably well known what is to be found inside Mariposa. If I was around the place I wouldn't dare to leave the place accessible to anyone or anything. Harold told in Fallout 1 that they were trying to find the source of mutant swarms that were bugging his caravans, I'm pretty certain that it would happen again, if Mariposa wasn't sealed off.

sweet, New California Republic always sticks out in my mind for a lot of reasons. from the wee guy who had all the best stuff selling in his tent at the beginning "in hoom i was a requlare theif :P" to the fact that it looked to me that it was futureistic.

typeing this im getting all the other brillant memories spring up & i getting happy ;). i was always thinking of adding some of these locations to a mod so might not need to.

ps: id love beth or obsid to give fallout2 & 1 a little graphics update & maby sell at a £5 bonus or release with nv or some other fallout 3 & i shure a lot of ppl would think thats a worthy adition to any collectors/special adition.

Considering Mariposa's been destroyed twice and had has had more than enough folks to pick over its bones, I don't think there's anything left.

If I had to choose any location from the original games I think I would like to see again. It is definitely one of my favorite locations from either game and one I fondly remember as having a good self contained story line. Also it was one of the first times in a video game I played that I realized I could actually work for "the bad guy" if I so desired. I'd love to see obsidians take on it 100 whatever years down the road.
