Richard Ham on bots

Post » Sat May 14, 2011 8:03 pm

hopefully this will calm the bot haters for now :)

Thank you for posting this!!! I was worried, and was getting pretty depressed by what other gamers were saying. Because I won't receive it for another week at least (stupid lack of Canadian pre-order), I haven't gotten a chance to play it.
You just made me feel a lot better.

Have an ice-cream. :icecream:

Richard Ham was just on a live stream from Machinima and he got asked a few questions, one of the big ones was about bots.

Can you post a link to this?

One of the biggest things i hate about the bots is on the aquarium map. When you are doing the escort as security all your bots just heard right into the "Fatal Funnel" right be for the lift repair objective. The entire other team is bots and right on the other side just mowing them down along with the 1 other human player on me team who thinks its a good thing to follow them every time and die. Meanwhile since there is no game chat i cant tell the the fool to follow me to the right to flank the bastardos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mission 2 of Security has to be the worst level ever created. I spent forever getting my ass kicked trying to get the data file back because no matter which route I took the enemy AI ambushed me and slaughtered me...even though I was carrying the mission essential stuff nobody thought it'd be a good idea to protect me. Fast forward another half hour and then one of the allied AI actually gets the case and runs all the way to the drop station. I'm so relieved that its going to end and I watch his back to make sure nobody sneaks in and kills him. Surprise! He decides that instead of ending the mission he should turn around and run down the stairwell nearby to fight a few guys coming up. He gets killed and they reset the case then I'm back to square one.

I like games that are challenging but this one is challenging because the AI is so inept that you're practically playing alone.

Also I have yet to see the AI get better as time gets close to running out or work harder if you're not able to complete the objective. If they're holding back I really wish they'd stop. :shakehead:

Yes, yes the bots are stupid.. they don't defend objectives. They run in, clear out an enemy or two, then the entire team of bots just spread out and start running throughout the map aimlessly.I also have a problem with objectives being directly in enemy spawns, creating horrible choke points thereby ruining all fun altogether. He can kiss my ass for the 2 1/2 hours I spent trying to get that damn data key in security mission 2 on easy. That was not fun, that was miserable.

This entire launch has shown me how much [censored] Splash Damage are full of and I refuse to support their company further.

U do know that there going to make the bots harder and smater when a patch comes out.

Just letting u know.

They don't have to make the enemies smarter/harder, they need to make your team mates better. I'm playing on hard and from the short time I've actually played I can say it is difficult enough as it is.

He didn't say they'd be making just the enemies smarter/harder. He said they'd be making ALL the bots smarter. Just saying "they need to be better" is too ambiguous to really do anything with. You can make them better by...making them smarter! They'll make better decisions, like cover you better or do primary objectives. Seems like they were just worried about the bots stealing your thunder completing primary objectives left and right.

I don't think we think the bots that are defending are stupid but I think when it comes to our side the bots suddenly turn super dumb and are just fodder for the opposing AI.

i loled cause you already paid them for the game

The manager gave me full retail price upon return because he agreed the game was crap. I'd say the door opened itself for me and then proceeded to wax its hinges.

i loled some more because i have worked in customer service, and i doubt you have.

Oh. I guess the game must be crap if he said so as well.

i loled cause its what i was thinking

lots of lols today :D

That doesn't quite seem to gel with what everyone else has said, but whatever, they programmed it and I haven't played it.

Hopefully they'll make bots more proactive but reduce their chances of headshots and the like.

They should just tone down the enemy AI's aimbotting imo.

Edit: In my experience the team AI doesn't get smarter as time ticks down either... they are still going for command posts when all it would take is one final push to win the match.

...Yes,do it,do it cause they can't coprehent what u are saying mr.Ham.
Make bots do all the work,i'd prefer it if u had an option though cause i prefer it as it is but apparently it's a minus in reviews,u know these journalists who put out reviews have an hour or so to do it,so they just enter the game without any intension of enjoing it and they don't have time to learn who it actually works and what your philosophy on the game is.Please do it then.

The AI bots are a problem for me, and that is my hugest complaint and maybe even my MAIN complaint.

If they could at least TWEAK it so the bots can cover me better or at least do better teamwork, I would give this game 4/5 (5/5 in my heart!). It would make this good game into a
much better experience, that's all I'm asking, lol. :D

-the bots are not stupid

the enemy ai bots are not stupid, my teammates are

-the hold back and wait for you to do the objective, even say for example a bot soldier is at the objective he will not complete it in the first few minutes.

that part is fine, i can do my own objectives, swap classes as needed, but would be nice if they still supported you, main problem is when i have to carry an objective

-they get more intelligent and aggressive as the time ticks down and they realise your aren't going to get the object done

have not seen this, i've seen my team ai engineers laying down turrets in completly random locations late in the game. teammates running away from you when your carrying a datakey
on escourt missions they do fine and protect their escourt, so why not me when i'm carrying the datakey

or, they grab the datakey and run full steam into the enemy without waiting for any support to follow

Any chance of getting an official statement anytime soon? Would be cool if SD/Bethesda knew about that poll and the result.
