[REQ] Rincewind's Luggage

Post » Sat Sep 18, 2010 4:54 pm

I make this request about once a year in the desperate hope that someone will eventually pick up on the idea and run with it. I would really really really love a creature that looks like The Luggage from the Discworld series. All I need is a creature version of The Luggage (you can skimp on the legs, even four would be enough...six or eight would be better if you can hack it) that can do a few basic creature emotes (using one edge of the trunk lid as a "mouth" of sorts so it can make little creatury mouthy movements). I always kind of imagined it sounding a little bit like a Guar, so the sounds would be easy I suppose. I can handle all the heavy scripting, since I've made several more complex companions for my mods before. I could even make an MWSE version that will make the luggage follow you everywhere. But I am definitely no animator, and I lack the Blender skills to make anything that looks decent. I can texture ok though. Is there any animator/creature mesh-maker here interested in this idea?

Also, a purple wizard had that has Wizzard written on it in sequins would be pretty awesome too. I can try to texture a wizard hat myself if there's already a mesh out there though.

Probably not exactly what you are looking for about the luggage, but http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=2108 And wizard hats are http://www.elricm.com/nuke/html/modules.php?op=modload&name=Downloads&file=index&req=viewdownloaddetails&lid=1215

Probably not quite what you want, but maybe a good start.

The wizard hats are a great start. Thanks!

I've seen a few mods like the other one you linked that try to emulate The Luggage in some way, but I'm really looking to get it done right somehow this time. It really isn't the same without little legs. Heh, basically I want a pack guar that happens to be in the shape of a trunk. Something that can even attack by butting its...er head...against things. ;)

Wait, wasn't Darknut making a luggage? Ah, http://www.youtube.com/user/tuffnutts#p/a/u/0/fLuTIFEDT0k is the video, though I don't recall it being released.

should it have human legs, or creature legs (like the one in the video of Darknut).

Should it appear like this one? (with teeth and tongue)

http://www.wargamesworkshop.co.uk/%5CImages%5CProductImages%5CDWM006.jpg

Does it fight?

How does it walk? I mean, the "front" of the creature while walking, is the larger or the smaller side of the chest? (in Darknut's video, the smaller side of the chest is the front of the creature.

Probably human.

Sometimes. When it's in the mood.

Does it fight?

In other words: Yes. Frequently.

How does it walk? I mean, the "front" of the creature while walking, is the larger or the smaller side of the chest? (in Darknut's video, the smaller side of the chest is the front of the creature.

Probably the smaller side in front.

Just Google "Terry Pratchett" luggage and you'll find stacks.

---

Edit: The luggage normally fights by either swallowing the enemy (in which case they're never seen again - normally when it opens Rincewind sees his clean underwear, but just before/after it's swallowed someone you may see the teeth & tongue) - or else it just knocks them down and tramples them.

Heh, I don't think a swallowing animation would be necessary (or viable...to have it actually swallow an enemy that is), but having it able to fight people by "head-butting" or biting them would be great (I still think of the way a guar fights when I think of this). Having it grin or pout or pant sometimes would be great. In the books is was basically like a very loyal dog.

Well, it does raise its lid threateningly when it's angry. I think that would be fun to see.

I found some minuatures of it, that has legs on all the 4 sides, but on some covers of the books, it has legs only on the 2 larger sides

http://www.e-steve.co.uk/Jo/Discworld/Images/The%20Light%20Fantastic.jpg

how should it be?

In the books it is described as having hundreds of little legs underneath, not coming out the sides. And it seems to travel/attack in either direction.

The books don't actually say whether it's got legs at the front (or which way the front is for that matter) but since it can look from a distance like it's a normal trunk being pulled along the normal way, I'd go with the "short end is the front" thing, and just put legs down the sides. Don't know how you'd manage "hundreds" though (that definitely is in the books, repeatedly).

PS One of its idles should be to retract its legs and sit there looking just like a normal trunk. ;)

I would settle for as many legs as can be reasonably managed, and either orientation would work for me, since it's a little ambiguous which way it faces in the books and has been interpreted differently by many artists. They really should be little human looking legs though. That is the one element that would make it truly recognizable as "The Luggage" to any fan of the series.

Oh boy, someone else who asked for the Luggage.
Also you know about the Broken Drum mod right? That's an excellent Discworld mod.

The Broken Drum mod? I think I've heard of it before, but I'm not sure...
Is it any good?

One of the mod ideas I've been thinking of was an add-on to NOM.
Anybody remember the "BEER!" mod?

I wanted to make a bugfix and upgrade for it, fixing glitches, removing advlt content,
and upgrading it for use with the most recent version of NOM.
As it is, it contains (poorly documented) advlt content, is riddled with glitches,
and requires an outdated version of NOM, which it has built in.
On the other hand, it adds a wonderful selection of new beverages, and several new taverns.

Aside from fixing the above issues, I wanted to add optional support for some of the better tavern mods.
I could add support for the Broken Drum, if it is a good mod.
I could do something along the lines of my work on "The Bathing Mod v2".
Hmm, what do you think?

Perhaps I should mention this to Taddeus, since he is working on a new version of NOM.

Edit: Oh, I almost forgot... Nice hat, Stuporstar! :D

here is a couple of screenshot, from the game

http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/2712/screenshot428c.jpg

http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/259/ggggrv.jpg

you may notice I used it to replace the guild chest, in the mages guild of Balmora. I thought it was fun. :)

I made the walking/running forward animation, and the idle where, as suggested by Melian, it just "sits" as a normal chest. Once completed, I'll look for a golden texture to use for the metallic parts, because in all the picture I saw of it, it is golden.

In the meantime, I found there was also a videogame and I believe a movie about this book.
