What does the ring of hircine actually do? i Figured that if you wear it it , you can transform into a werewolf more than once a day , but that seems to not be the case

That's the Cursed Version. You get the Cursed Version for killing and skinning Sinding. You get the "Uncursed" version if you help Sinding kill some Werewolf Hunters. The Uncursed version let's you transform at will more.

The Cursed Ring of Hircine will randomly transform your character into a werewolf, and the uncursed Ring of Hircine grants the ability to transform a second time in one day. Neither version of the ring works unless
Spoiler
you become a member of the Circle, a subfaction of the Companions Guild.

FALSE. Im not sure if you have to be in the companion guild or not but I am. You can transform with it as many times as you want per day. Equip it then go to powers in the magic section. Enjoy transforming hour after hour.

Maybe it's possible to do it this way, but there's really not very much reliable information on the internet on this yet. Heck, I've heard rumors of wild werewolves in the game, but no one seems to be able to confirm this. The player's guide might have information on werewolves that's better than that found on the internet, but I've been hearing that there's stuff in the game that isn't mentioned in the player's guide. I've mostly just been assuming that the Companions Guild is the only way to become a werewolf because I have the Cursed Ring of Hircine, which is supposed to randomly transform you into a werewolf, of which the transformation part never happens. Of course there could be other reasons why the transformations do not occur, such as it being a glitch, but I don't know for a fact, and I'm not certain anyone currently does.

I have seen it stated that progressing through the Companions Guild is ONE way to become a werewolf, which seems to indicate that there may be more than one way to become a werewolf. I think only time will tell, when people finally figure out everything that is in the game, which likely won't occur until the Creation Kit is out and people can look at everything that's in the game.

Edit: From what I've been reading, I may have been right the first time about the Cursed Ring of Hircine not triggering any random transformations being a glitch, unless if Argonians are immune to the curse in this one. If anyone knows anything about this, let me know.

Edit: Actually, I might be right about the Companions Guild questline being the only way to become a werewolf in Skyrim. But I'm still confused.

@Other ways of becoming a werewolf - You're SUPPOSED to be able to contract the Lupinus disease (akin to how you become a vampire), which leads to...

@"wild" werewolves - The only other werewolves I've seen in the game so far (haven't been playing that long though) were those of the Circle, Sinding (Ill Met By Moonlight), and ONE in a cage in a Silver Hand dungeon (can't remember which one :(). SO, in theory, getting attacked by one should give you the disease which will allow you to become a werewolf.

@Cursed Ring of Hircine - It DOES randomly transform you, at least it did for me (luckily I was in the wilderness :P). Note, however, that I had already done the quest in the Companions Guild to become a werewolf; so it could be a glitch if you aren't already a werewolf.

@Ring of Hircine - Once you get the "uncursed" version, it will allow you to transform as many times as you want; when your transformation ends, put the ring back on and do it again. Of course, I was already a werewolf when I got this ring.

Once I get some more free time, I'll see if I can contract the werewolf disease on a character who doesn't already have it (provided I can remember which Silver Hand dungeon had the werewolf in the cage :P).

Well I have the Cursed Ring of Hircine, but am not a member of the Circle. What I haven't been able to figure out is whether or not the ring is supposed to be transforming you at random if you're not already a werewolf. I've been hearing it both ways, with some saying that the only way to become a werewolf is through the Companions Guild and others (including IGN) who are claiming that the Cursed Ring of Hircine and the Ring of Hircine can let you be a werewolf without joining and progressing through the Companions Guild. Only one of these claims can be correct. I've also heard rumors of wild werewolves as well, which someone noted in a loading screen, but I'm not sure what that means. Do wild werewolves refer to Sinding, or do wild werewolves refer to an enemy spawn that triggers when you're high level? And if the latter, can they turn you into a werewolf? I swear the more I read into it, the more confused I get.

Finally, if my issue turns out to be caused by a glitch, what do I do about it?

Well, not sure how to test the Cursed Ring, as its -random-. I supposed you could leave the game running for a while and see if a transformation occurs. For the "cleansed" Ring of Hircine, it would be easy to see if that works. Finish the quest by joining Sinding and kill all the hunters. Once you leave the cave, Hirsine will contact you and cleanse the ring for you. Once that happens, equip the ring and check the "Powers" section. You should have a new Power that allows you to transform (can't remember the name of it, but it's NOT Beast Form).

If you DON'T get that. Report it to Bethesda as a bug and hopefully they will reply with "working as intended" or "noted".

I'll get my brother to do the quest tonight and see if Hirsine's Ring works for him (he never joined the Companions either).

As for "wild" werewolves, I have yet to see any (I've seen a few -hand placed- ones in dungeons though). Of course, I'm only level 12...so it may be a while before I see any, lol.
