Riot shotgun VS Dinner bell

Which would you guys advise me to use? I prefer guns that have readily available repair part alternatives with the Jury rigger perk

Well, Riot shotgun is a very lucky tool to have, its basically an automatic shotgun in terms of rapid fire rate.

IIRC you can repair both using level-action with JR.

Riot is more about raining lead and Dinner Bell is more 'tactical'

The Dinner Bell has a greatly reduced spread, if I recall correctly. With the Trigger Discipline trait it's likely possible to snipe from medium distances with the Dinner Bell and deal an absurd amount of Sneak Attack damage.

Personally I favor the hunting shotgun / Dinner Bell. They have a cooler look and feel, plus the spread is tight enough that you can pretty much make it your only weapon (congratulations game devs, you made a shotgun that is realistically accurate!). The riot shotgun has higher DPS and faster reload, but the horrendous spread just kills it for me. It also does a little bit less damage per shot, so between that and the lower accuracy you'll get less bang for your ammo-carrying buck with the riot shotgun.

Dinner Bell, because it is realistic, I dislike how games and movies exaggerate shotgun spread. A 20 guage firing 6 shot has sufficient knock-down strength up to 40-50 yards.

Dinner Bell. Getting it is fun and feels like you've accomplished something.

I prefer Dinner Bell. I find that in order for the Riot Shotgun to be effective, you need to be nearly touching your target, while you can use Dinner Bell from a distance and still do decent damage.

I always use slugs, and I like the riot shotgun with the shotgun surgeon perk (I like shotguns) what's better than a full auto shotgun?

Laughing maniacally while you're firing a Grenade Machine Gun, normal or Mercy, at a pack of half-a-dozen Deathclaws as they meet their demise before they can reach you? And in third person with the Pre-War Spring Outfit and a hat to boot? Just sayin'.

Edit:

Anyways, I actually preferred using the standard Hunting Shotgun compared to the Dinner Bell due to the Long Tube modification for the standard. Though 3 shells difference doesn't seem like a whole lot, there's a lot of times with the Dinner Bell when I was caught in the middle of reloading during a battle. Maybe should I aimed for the torso and not the head...

I basically use both as my mainstay weapons. Almost always both loaded with slugs; Dinner Bell for medium range+, Riot Shotgun for everything closer than that. Sometimes I'll swap in the Lever-action Shotgun (where the hell is my unique Terminator variant of this Obsidian) just because it's awesome.

I carry both. Hunting Shotgun as the primary weapon and Riot Shotgun for a OMFG panic button.

As for Dinner Bell. Take that hunk of junk over to the Vendertron and sell it, then buy a better hunting shotgun and install both mods. Loosing 3 rounds in ammo capacity and a 33% wider spread for a small damage boost isn't a good deal.

i used the riot shotgun as a "omg i'm getting annihilated" gun rather than a first choice weapon.
it's very effective against most things but it's already been said the spread is horrendus at anything beyond maybe 20 yards.

The Dinner Bell has better damage and spread.
Since it's better than Riot Shotgun I don't see the point in picking the lesser variant.

The DAM difference is only minimal when you consider the Riot Shotguns high rate of fire, Hunting Shotgun is good for normal use, but if a Deathclaw comes sprinting at you, the Riot Shotgun can put out shells far faster than the Hunting Shotgun, and reloads quicker too. Everyone has personal things they look for in a weapon, might be DAM, DPS, Spread, Clip size or even the type of ammo it uses.

Because you cannot mod the Dinner Bell I find its 5 ammo cap not as good as the moddable hunting shotgun as I often find even with 100 guns I can often encounter enemies that survive the initial 5 round attack either due to my aim or their hitpoints/armour. With the expanded hunting shotgun those extra 3 shots make all the difference.

For sheer awesomeness the riot shotgun is better...nothing like unloading a hail of slugs at something.

Riot shotgun due to amo capacity and how much damage I can deal in one clip. Haven't tested it but I expect the riot shotgun can unload 12 shots in the same time the dinner bell unloads 5, then there's the reload speed on top of that which is a big bonus.

Thing I like most about the Dinner Bell is the quest to get it, and the gun itself is a good reward. A top notch primary weopon that is fun to use until the Riot Shotgun starts to appear at vendors :)

From what I've read the Hunting Shotgun is better than Dinner Bell.Dinner Bell has 1.2 spread, Hunting Shotgun has 0.9 spread after the mod has been added.

If you include slugs then the Hunting shotgun has a respectable spread of something around 0.4

He's talking about the 'clip' tube.

IMO 3-round extra doesn't help much.
