RIP David Bowie

Post » Tue Jan 19, 2016 6:24 am

David Bowie has died after a battle with cancer at age 69. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/david-bowie-dead-legendary-artist-854364

His example meant a lot to me as a young bisixual male in the early seventies struggling to understand who I was and who I wanted to be. He wrote some of the best songs of the decade, in my opinion. Suffragette City is a song I still listen to at least once a week - it always makes me smile. He produced one of my favorite albums of the seventies: The Stooges Raw Power. And on top of everything else I think he was a pretty decent actor too. This is a great loss to rock music and to popular culture in general.

I guess I wasn't paying attention. I didn't know he was ill.

You'll be missed Mr. Bowie. Peace.

He just turned 69 on the 8th.

RIP David Bowie, sad news, while i wasn't a massive fan, his songs were a big part of my early years. i also had no idea he was ill, bit of a shock when i read the news.

I just saw the headline - my mouth literally dropped open. I had no idea he was ill and this is a real shock. Amazing musician and a true cultural icon for decades.

My wife just pointed out that Bowie had released a new album on Friday. That's a little reminiscent of Warren Zevon. He released The Wind on August 26th and died on September 7th, 2003.

Apparently there was a music video and everything for one the songs off the new album. I'm totally shocked about this whole thing.

This is not a good thing to find out first off in the morning, not that it ever is. :( I hadn't heard any news about David Bowie in some time, but still wondered about him from time to time.

I'm from a generation that grew up on Labyrinth and there was no one that could have played Jareth better. As I got older and learned more of his music and about him I realised... well, how awesome he really was. Part of me wondered if a sequel to Labyrinth could ever work, but it would only work with David Bowie returning, which can't happen now.

RIP David

David Bowie kept his 18th month battle with cancer a secret, so as to allow privacy for his family. A great man to the end, what a shame.

I grew up listening to David Bowie and he always made sure that I knew that all the cool people were hella weird. His music was so lively and unique and completely amazing.

Rest In Peace David Bowie, master of melody and music

Zevon knew he didn't have long to live, and released The Wind as a final piece. That must have been Bowie's intent too. Well done sir.

Well that ruined my morning.

My wife and I danced to a song from the Labyrinth soundtrack at our wedding.

I would not say I was a huge fan of his, but I did enjoy his music from time to time and and would agree he was a pretty decent actor, for a singer.

RIP good sir, RIP.

Yet another reminder I'm....we're getting older and it makes one think. As a long time on again off again smoker for almost 30 years, (I'd say about 15 years of which I was actually smoking.) I wonder if I'll end up with cancer at some stage. Scary thought. Unfortunately not scary enough for me quit, yet again....at this stage, though it is in the plan. (I've quit for 8 years, started again, quit for 3 years, started again, wash rinse repeat with varying time frames.)

Great musician.

And he played a character in one of my favorite games,

Wasn't a huge fan of him but it is depressing news.

What's odd is before I found out this morning I was humming "Changes" for some reason as I couldn't get that song out of my head.

RIP Mr. Labyrinth guy.

I found it incredibly moving that he hung on until the new album was released and videos shot for all the songs. This really was his way of saying goodbye and what a way to sign off. An artist to the end. Incredibly talented and just hugely influential - entire genres may not have existed if it wasn't for him.

So many great songs to choose from but depending on my mood these two would probably be my favs - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoDamvrfUbQ and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sa6bI_95G9I
