Roads

Post » Fri Apr 08, 2011 3:20 am

Will we finally see traders, travelling NPCs, travelling groups, escorts, adventurers, guard posts and all the nifty things modded into Oblivion, along with the occasional Imperial patrols?

Things that modders couldn't get to work properly were caravans, carts and carriages. Maybe they could take a hint from Red Dead Redemption and allow you to pay for a scenic ride as an alternative to fast travel?

I feel as though civil war and the appearance of dragons would probably just serve to make roads emptier. Maybe we'll see guarded caravans or something, or the ocassional Imperial guard outpost. I, for one, would like to see Nordic rebels, brigands, and roving bands of highwaymen and bandits.

I think something awesome would be some kind of lawless outpost in the wilderness where the rebels make their base, but that's something for another thread.

I hope so - the impending doom does kind of let them off the hook if it's not there (as Calemvir said above), but I would like to see more people when out on my travels.

[Edit] Slightly OT, but not enough to make a new thread I think: how about random encounters? It was one of the things I really liked in FO3 and it wouldn't look out of place in a TES game, I reckon.

Well roads will be empty often like it is in real life for medieval times but your completely right, the npcs you listed definitely need to travel the roads. From the snippets of information about how advanced the Radiant AI system is in Skyrim, I'm sure they have some system in place that has NPCs following the roads for meaningful reasons other than just to do it. Oblivion had a few npcs that would travel the roads to get to another town because they had to do things like the Khajiit from anvil, the wood elf that you have to kill for the Dark Brotherhood quests and the Countess (don't remember which town)

how about random encounters? It was one of the things I really liked in FO3 and it wouldn't look out of place in a TES game, I reckon.

Random encounters have been confirmed.

I really hope the roads aren't empty like in OB. I'd like to see random travelers, people carting goods to market, guarded carriages escorting royalty, caravans, etc, in addition to the random bandits we meet.

The roads in general just felt empty. It was as if no one ever left their city dwellings.

As long as it doesn't look bad (I don't want to see tons of people called "pilgrim" or "traveller" for the whole duration of the game) and it doesn't unnecessarily kill off dozens of quest NPC's.

... I have a feeling we're not gonna see many imperial patrols. Remember what happened to the empire? Right, it's not there anymore.

But yes, I'd very much like some activity on the roads, and I'm quite sure Bethesda will have implemented it somewhat....

There should be. This is another place they should take a cue from Obsidian with Fallout: New Vegas. You should encounter caravans relatively frequently on the roads. Also the roads should be safer than the wilderness.

Even in dangerous times some people can't hire an escort. Also some people think they can handle themselves. I do believe you should have a choice of hiring an escort per the rules of the caravan, some might have escorts included mandated in the price while others have it being optional depending on how far you're traveling. Also I think there should be a mercenary guild where you can be hired as an escort for private or public hire.

I placed an idea in the idea topic that looks like this.

If there are stalls near the villages or somewhere just in a random place (like Fallout 3) you can trade stuff there with the owner of that stall.

You can also rob him. Or when he is being robbed you can catch the robbers and get a reward, like some gold and a free bed for the night in the nearest village.

And maybe people will call you a hero in that village like ''hey you saved that poor guy from being robbed who owns that stall near the village''

i really hope for a more dynamic world this time...

imagine this in the future....you look at a village miles away and you see smoke....you barely see people...because theyre are so distant...but a battle is happening there ...

i mean... a entire dynamic world that is living despite your existence....

I would like the roads to be slightly occupied but I will understand because of the fact of dragons and civil war, but maybe one day (hope goes to the new AI system) that when my character climbs a long tall mountain and is wounded from a fierce fight, I try to regain my strength with rest to be stumbled upon by a nearby trader making his way to the next city. If anything like that would happen woop sold :)

How about safe roads this time? Seriously how do people travel around without getting attacked every time?

you prevent attacks by hiring mercenaries or owning guards or being strong enough to take care of yourself. It is a dangerous world but people do need to travel.

Yeah!!!

Imagine hiring a body guard which is a good friend of yours.

Since there is no zoom-in talking he will talk with you as you travel the roads. Then you can talk about fun stuff. :hubbahubba:

But oh the noes! your body guard gets shot in the head with an arrow! He was a good friend... :violin:

But now he dead! And you maybe too if you don't find cover quickly! You'll never know how fast that murderous archer can be!

I just completely pictured that in my head, I keep thinking of a perlious journey to the highest mountain with a bodyguard and you pass the ruins of a gate. You talk casually to your guard until you hear the scream of him being ripped apart by trolls. And you wont see much as it's decided to snow blurring your vision

If dragons can attack towns under their own autonomy, why can't merchants trade between towns? Would compliment a 'living' economy well. Also, it follows that where there are merchants there should be bandits. I hope Radiant AI lives up to its hype.
I'd rather see a dynamic economy than traveling merchants tho.

As Skyrim is set during a civil war, I think it would be quite appropriate to have bands of refugees and wounded soldiers moving away from the front lines. Good characters can offer to heal the soldiers, fix their equipment or share magic secrets with the battlemage for example. While evil characters can rob the refugees, murder the soldiers taking what little equipment they have left or passing a speech check to fool them into thinking you are a ranking officer and ordering them to return to the front lines.
