RoboCop statue in Detroit

Detroit Mayor Dave Bing, who has taken to the Internet to solicit ideas for the city's revival, said on Monday there were no plans for a RoboCop statue to honor the 1987 science fiction movie based on Detroit. The question had come in via Twitter.

"There are not any plans to erect a statue to Robocop," Bing wrote on his Twitter account. "Thank you for your suggestion."

Bing touched off an immediate wave of Twitter messages from fans of the movie who hope he will reconsider, and others amused that he had even responded.

"Some people just don't get it," grumbled one message on Twitter. Another wrote: "If I were mayor of Detroit, my top priority would be a Robocop statue."

RoboCop, Detroit needs you again.

So says a group of sci-fi fans, artists and business leaders who pledged Wednesday to raise up to $80,000 for a larger-than-life statue of the crime-fighting cyborg from the 1987 cult classic.

If all goes as planned, enthusiasts will erect a statue, created by a metro Detroit artist, at Imagination Station, an outdoor art project near the abandoned Michigan Central Station just off Michigan Avenue.

12% funded so far. Would you buy that for a dollar?

I saw this on the local news and I have to admit I rolled my eyes a little. I guess it's a neat idea, but I personally won't be driving down there just to see it.
They need to raise more money for real cops....IMO.
Nothing wrong with art though.

Having a statue won't help with the city's crime rate.

I hope there isn't a solid bronze statue of The Faz anywhere. Or a statue of him full stop.

I see this as a clever ploy by the mayor: it gets them a Robocop statue, grabs extra media attention, and it doesn't even come out of his budget. Gotta respect a good Xanatos gambit .

Having a statue based on a movie where the city was a step below the Capitol Wasteland... tends not to help with tourism.

The remaining 25,000 has been funded. By OCP. No, this is not a joke.

UPDATE: We've reached the $50,000 goal with the help of many many supporters and a very generous contribution from Pete Hottelet at www.omniconsumerproductscorporation.com, but you can still contribute, so please keep backing the project. All the reward levels still stand, and we're currently discussing how to branch this project and fundraising into bigger and bigger things with a better and better impact on Detroit. Thank you, everybody! Wow.

Shame they seem to be out of stock for ED-209s. I guess I'll have to settle for http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVwbUljGs3g from Japan... :P

Or you could http://www.artofvideogames.org/ to get them in the Smithsonian exhibit for next year.

Takes a long time to vote, but it would be REALLY cool :vaultboy:

As long as it's privately funded, as a Michigander, I have no problem with it. A bit... decadent (seems like something you'd see on Family Guy), but if Detroit citizens want it, go right ahead.

If they're using public funds to build it, though... no, no, no, no, no.

I was trying to think of something cooler for the city. Maybe a http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://planetmedia.gamespy.com/images/00/46/4600_ScreenShot27_copy_normal.jpg&imgrefurl=http://planetfallout.gamespy.com/images/4611/PC/Fallout-New-Vegas/Screenshots/The-Statue&usg=__hpLVa0urKUunFvTb3xJhgnk-2iY=&h=416&w=740&sz=69&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=YxRJ_8B95x4MiM:&tbnh=120&tbnw=213&ei=hwRcTfu0FoH-8AaF-tT0DA&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dnew%2Bvegas%2Bstatue%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26sa%3DN%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26biw%3D1567%26bih%3D812%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=1152&vpy=290&dur=161&hovh=168&hovw=300&tx=131&ty=66&oei=hwRcTfu0FoH-8AaF-tT0DA&page=1&ndsp=31&ved=1t:429,r:14,s:0 of Steve Yzerman and Barry Sanders

I would be much happier with a statue of Sheogorath in Detroit or Washington DC., although I could see how Pip Boy would fit in the Smithsonian exhibit.

[responding to Gstaff's post above] They already have http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0yqMUB2RMkc....but your idea is a good one.

I agree, normally I would suggest spendin' the money on repairin' the ancient infrastructure or hirin' more cops to combat the high crime rates, but since Detroit is a model city with extra cash they ought to just build a statue.

I seriously have a picture with that statue somewhere. I can't find it right now though. I'm going to try and find it. I found one with my girflriends dad and her cousin but not with me in it..

Well, http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2011/02/16/AR2011021605433.html. And Bing's office is supposedly changing its tune now - either the statue will be on public property or on a private art exhibition area in the city.

I personally don't see any harm in it, myself. No public funds are going towards it, and who knows what its impact might be.

I'd pay a whole lot of money to see the face of the first tagger or vandal to walk up to RoboCop - "Your move, creep!"

That's what he wants you to think :shifty:. I did say it was a Xanatos gambit, didn't I?

EDIT: If you don't know who Xanatos is, go watch Gargoyles. Immediately .

Isn't Detroit, essentially, a hole? Like a gaping maw in the urban sprawl riddled with destitution and crime? I'm thinking $50,000 might be of more use to anything but a statue of a fictional character. RoboCop isn't going to go around kicking punks in the head like he should, he's going to get vandalised by a bunch of teens.
