Rock Climbing

Post » Tue Sep 14, 2010 7:47 am

I dont know about you, but I actually rock climb. I would love for it to be in Skyrim if done in a certain way. There would be a majority of vertical and overhanging rocks/cliffs which you could climb no problem. But also, if you are in a city/village with a rock with routes, you would rock climb normally, but you would have to time jumps, or in rock climbing slang dynos, manuever side to side rapidly pressing A as if clinging to the rocks, and depending on how well you do these, you would succeed and earn gold. The harder the route, the harder the button pressings and shorter time you have to do it, the more money you earn.

They had climbing in Daggerfall. It'd be cool to see it make a return.

Well i thnk it would be kinda weird if you can rock climb while having all you'r equipment on, and with all that stuff in you'r backpack... If you are wearing, let's say full iron, that would have been waaay to heavy to rock climb with that sort of equipment on.

Actually, that is quite the problem.

Skyrim is a full fledged open-world RPG. In order to make it possible to scale mountains they'd have to, first, add an endless amount of specific points to grab onto along every single vertical surface in the game. Walls, cliffs, etc. Then, they'd have to design various animations both in first person and third person for when you are performing the feat. Due to arms stretching far above your body, as is natural when rock climbing, every piece of armor and clothing for both genders aswell as where the arm is attached to the shoulder would need to be prevented from clipping. Rocks and flora would also clip through your body quite often I suspect. It'd have to be a major part of the game and require a lot of attention.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Err... I don't think you play much TES. That's not the way these kinds of games work. You don't just get gold for some random achievement.

why would you get money for doing this? and they dont have to add specific rock climbing places for every single point, can create patterns along surfaces, not that significant

Mhmm, what about the ledges that don't lead anywhere? What if a character were to hoist themselves onto one and end up in a wall? Every climbable point in the entire game would have to be tested. So yeah, it's pretty significant.

I say yes to rock climbing but you would have to buy some equipment and then activate a cliff side and the faster you press buttons the quicker up you go, you could also maybe buy reppelling equipment but honestly guys we are making this seem more modern than historic

I'd take some form of rock climbing only once they are done customizing horse armor.

I'm not trolling. I'm telling you your idea is nonsense and would never be taken seriously by anyone who has a head for what can and cannot be in an open world RPG such as Skyrim. Grow up and take critique like a man. Wasn't prepared for negative feedback? Then you shouldn't have made a thread like this.

An it would make sense

No, it wouldn't. You don't get +5 gold every time you kill a bandit or eat a loaf of bread. Why would you earn money for climbing a rock? Do you know how stupid that sounds? In a world created to feel as real as possible to the player, currency just randomly falls into your lap out of nowhere because you accomplished something mundane. Simply because you want a certain feature in the game doesn't mean that it makes sense by any degree.

I have a deep passion for elder scrolls having played 20 days of total gameplay in only one character, i havent even counted the others. I know open world RPG very well as they are what i grew up with and are my favorite genre.

Again, it wouldnt be a random route it would be a set route, in a city, with officail like characters who would give you gold for completing it LIKE A MINI QUEST

Im a climber as well and I think your idea is poorly thought out. First of all having a climbing chalenge "mini quest" would feel so random and out of place. Second, as others said it would take a stupid amount of time to implement climbing properly. Wich brigs me to my third point, Real climbing ,which i'm guessing you want, isn't really possible in this sort of game without being incredibly repetitive and boring.

Actually, I believe a climbing mechanic would be a great idea for Skyrim. Not just merely for immersion purposes, but to really expand the size of Skyrim through vertical layering. Being able to traverse an area horizontally is fine, but also being able to do it vertically adds a whole new level of expansion and space. It's probably not something we would see in Skyrim, but it's an idea that I think BGS could consider in future games.
