Role of Children

Post » Wed Mar 02, 2011 9:02 am

Just a couple of points...

First, Wasn't oblivion forced to remove children because of the game getting accused of virtual violence or somesuch against children? What is different now that skyrim is allowed to portray kids in the universe.

Second, What role will such children have in said game? Will they be just other NPCs populating the world or will they actually be able to do something, as in be part of a quest ( Imagine rescuing the son/daughter of someone for a quest )

Third, What would the routines be for children? Will they actually have schedules or will they go around following their parents?

Thats it for now.

Bethesda implemented children in Fallout 3 without any problems.
So there won't be a problem putting them in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

I highly doubt they will be killable (and you're not allowed to discuss that on here, IIRC). I reckon there probably will be quests where you can rescue them, but apart from that I reckon they will follow their parents about/muck about in the street or in their homes and just generally add to the atmosphere.

1. Oblivion was never designed to have children
2. I'm sure some kids will be part of quests
3. I'd be very surprised if they were.
4. They'll probably have different schedules

All in all, I expect them to be treated similar to Fallout 3's kids, except Skyrim's will look like they've had a bath since birth and may carry less diseases. Similar to the difference between wild and pet rats.

I doubt it was a case of forced, since they had them in Fallout 3. But they were all "essential," as in couldn't be harmed in any way...on top of being so definitively annoying everyone wanted to.

Third,

You don't even want to say that, if you want this thread to stay open. No, they won't be killable, and bringing up the subject is a great way to get a thread locked.

Kids would be excellent quest starters...because they are unkillable.

I hope they're relatively out-of-the-way. Some street urchins serving in the employ of the Thieves Guild would be pretty cool, and they'll definitely be the subject of many Radiant story quests, but otherwise I want them to mostly remain with their parents or at home. Out of my way. :stare:

Its just talking about child kill mods thats the issue, or is it more than that?

It's the discussion of it. It's been classified as mature content, and since we're a 13+ forum, we can't allow the discussion of it.

So please stick to points #2 and #4 in this discussion.

Please for the love of Khorne and Nurgle, make the children not like the ones in Little Lamplight! I HATED how they were extremely bratty, and there was no way to talk back to them or at least allow me to gain more respect from them. I shall forever curse your name, Princess and Mayor MacCready.

The NV ones, much better.

OH GOD, kill me now. I can still cast command humanoid and scooch them over a cliff though right? :)
Or maybe we have bottomless pits. Or maybe put them in a room and lock the door...

I hope they serve as an interesting source of info for us. Alot of people wouldn't really take note of children while discussing serious stuff, either having not noticed the child or not caring. So they could easily have info to share far more willingly than the advlts in a town/city. Would be nice to see them involved with the Thieves Guild too, pick pockets and perhaps guiding you to specific houses/manors that you have to rob from, showing you more stealthy ways to get in such as an upstairs window or something.

I want to go riding into a town after slaying the dragon who attacked it not so long ago and have the little ones run along side my horse shouting praises for their dragon-slaying heroine. :celebration:

Little Lamplight made my blood boil... I hope the kids in Skyrim are like real medieval children, doing hard work at the fields, having high respect to advlts and often disregarded by their parents because of limited supplies. (And huge number of them)

I must disagree Ratwar, at least on your first point. If I recall (either an article or something else about Oblivion), a dev said they wanted to put children in, but there were numerous problems popping up and they just scrapped it. I can't remember where I saw it but I know I did.

Khajiit and Argonians, yes!

I shudder a bit to think of an Orc child though.

Argonian children present an interesting conundrum, in that they really oughta hatch from eggs. I hope that's represented in the game!

I hope children have a bigger role then running around all day.
Would Bethesda get in trouble if they made the kids work a bit? Or would that piss someone off?
Also they would make great Missing person quest archtype starters. Just having a small child tell you that their mommy is missing would pull a few heart strings. In most people at least.
