RP (Role Play)

Post » Fri Jul 24, 2009 11:23 am

i don't Know if this topic was ever discussed before, but i will start a topic on RP anyway.

Fallout Online Should be an entierly Roleplaying Game. Why? thats Why :

I haven't played fallout 1 & 2, but i did play Fallout 3 and New Vegas. And as we all know, Fallout is a Whole
universe, with a deep story, deep backgroup, loads of special characters and events. When i played the
Fallouts I was always pleased by the RPG side of the game, and mostly by the RP in RPG, Roleplay.
I have tested a few MMO's and in most of them i have never or even not at all experienced Roleplay, and
therfore, each MMO i tested bored me. All exept one : a French MMO called Leelh. Its a post apocalyptic, with a deep story, just like fallout, but the greatest thing is that its entirely RP. This is really great for the game. It attracts a mature public, which most of you are since you played Fallout 1 & 2, it creates a solid community, always willing to help and devoted to the good of the game (solving bugs, having new ideas to improve the game, etc...). It also make all those "kevins" or "kikoolols" as we say in french ( Small (in age) kids that, well... hum... how can i say... don't respect the rules, are annoying etc...) are naturally pushed away. Finnaly, RP means in game events, that help bring "fresh, new air".

i think i haven't forgotten anything. So! what do you think about it?

It looks pretty cool but I am monolingual so unless there is an English translation out there I am afraid its a no-go for me.

I honestly believe that Role Playing your created character in online games really helps to flesh out the world. The developers and GMs can only do so much, it is up to the players to make the world come alive, since we are the ones inhabiting the world. NPCs are scripted, but it is through interaction with others that an MMO is made fun. I RP my characters when I play MMOs, which usually gets me branded as a weirdo, but I am so sick of people coming into an MMO and simply talking like they would in real life, and talking about how real life is. I have a guild in an MMO I'm playing now and it is a requirement for people when they talk in the guild to roleplay their character. If they want to talk to others about their life, then they should go to some other chat, not a game.
Well, enough of my ranting though....

The way I play games, people probably assume I'm a child. goldensteev, you should give FO1/2 a try if your focus is on characters and story. They are vastly superior to their sequels in that respect.

I've never really understood RP, actually. Maybe I lack the imagination for it. What does an RPG need to have a good emphasis on role-playing do you think goldensteev?

Sorry for the length of my reply, but i felt it was necessary, take time to read it, thanks.

Well lets explain Roleplaying for people who have yet never expericened it. Its rather Simple, instead of playing Yourself in the game, you play the persona or avatar. let me show you an example everybody should understand. If you were using Roleplay in WOW, well if my character was an Orc, you'd have to speak and act like an orc at all times in the game (well not all the time cause we'd all become scysophrenic {euh i don't know if its writen like that or even if u say that in english}). you would also have to invent your own personnality, your own story and stick to it. RP also meens moral choices. For instance, in this Leelh game, i decided to become a traitor an serve the opposing faction, because my persona did not like the attitude and the goals of his ex-faction.

For me, a good RPG, needs, as i said before, a deep, complicated scenario, a deep and complete Background, many different characters, events etc... When i said I loved the RP side and most of all i love playing the RP side, well thats because... how can i put it... an other example. When i play Fallout i like inventing deep personas, that stick to who they are, and don't just change attitude cause first I wanted to be a nice guy and then well i get bored of being the nice guy, so i become the nasty guy. i like playing fallout the reallistic way like having to drink, eat and sleep, and having 2 or 3 weapons with you (how many times have i seen my friends with all the weapons that could exist in the game with them at all times!!!...) not the whole god damn arsenal!!!

An other advantage of RP in MMO's is the PvP. in This Leelh game, there is no (or very few) PvE, and even less ussless quests. lets say well in Fallout online, a guy gives you a quest saying you have to kill the raiders that are harrassing the caravans. well, in Leelh, the Actual chef of the Faction, who is a real person, and not an NPC, would say to you, okay, we have this raider problem, we have to deal with it. and The raiders would be then again, not be NPC's but real people that prefer having a raider persona (and let me tell you there will be more than enough people willing to play this role) than a townsfolk. In this Leelh, there are no NPC guards, YOU are the guards, WE are the guards that defend the town incase we are under attack!!
In Leelh the Forum's are also RP, which meens in the Forum you Incarnate your avatar and not You (there is a none RP forum also), and through this forum, you post News for your faction, the problems, the organisation, the futur moves of your faction, the newcomers, the rules etc... etc... And this my friends Greatly increases The Depth and Immersion of this MMO

I think, Roleplay can be the answer for a lot problems exposed in the Forum.

I hope i answered your question BraveRobot.

I have explained everything i think. feel free to ask more questions about RP and how it should be, in my idea, in Fallout online.

Sorry for weird structure of my Reply, but i write things as the come.

Role Playing is like taking your favorite book character with all their strengths and weakness and pretending to be them in the story.

How would you have handled that situation?
Would you have stayed to fight or run away?

And then you can take that ideal/image on step farther and play/daydream about what that character would do in different situations.

Basically Role Playing is pretending to be some one different with different strengths/weakness, knowledege and experiences and dealing with situations via a game (MMO, computer game, or old fashion Paper and dice game.)

It's a chance to be some one different and do something different.

Wow, you don't need the developers holding your hand in order to "roleplay". I roleplay in a lot of games that aren't "rpgs". Either the designated character (E.g. an army officer in tactical or strategic games) or my DIY svcker trying to save Tamriel. And always someone who can't just reload when the shit hits the fan and the bullets hit the player character. (Although I won't lie and pretend I don't use quicksaves regarding dialogue.) This is great fun without ever forgetting 'it's a game' or the 'bad' game design "breaking my immersion". Some things that are unrealistic annoy me (some things that are realistic annoy me) but that ruin a game so stop wailing about "my immersion!"

[/rant] Why do games studios have to fight and die? War, war never changes : (

I know you don't need the developers holding your hand in order to roleplay, its just well i figuired that better doing roleplay with everybody else and in an entierly roleplaying game, than roleplay only with your guild or just a few guys while everybody else doesn't roleplay in a game not ment to use roleplay.
Of course some unreallistic things annoy me and of course some reallistic things annoy me too, but i just think that the game would be a lot better, and a lot more fun, if it was an entierly roleplaying game. And I'm sorry but from my point of view, Immersion is almost the most important thing an MMO should have.

I agree with you the whole magic in this game is the role playing if this is lost then it will become another franchise failure like all the rest.

Goldensteev,If you were really surprised and liked the depth of fallout 3-New Vegas, you cant imagine what roleplaying depth you miss by not having played 1 or 2.

To all those that have id like to remind the Golden Globes from fallout2.Have you seen an idea like that on a game or a more hillarius bonus perk anywere?

An MMO is not an easy thing to RP.RP depends on people and guilds/organisations/factions formed. There should be strong dos and dont dos on the game if there any NPC joinable factions but in the end its the player that decides. We must all stop thinking this as its single player fathers though.

There need to be role playing servers out there simple as that. I have tried role playing many times on many games without the use of a dedicated server and it was not easy. This is not to say that i wasn't able to do it but it wasn't as good as it could of been. A good example of a game that had strong rp core but turned its back on them was AOC. I would really like to see fallout online be rp driven and have strong dedication to rp. But sometimes we all just want to be silly and not serious. Thus the rp dedicated servers were born!

Side note: i really want fallout online to have a strong rp driven core. if you were to focuse on strong rp pvp or pve rp is what I would choose. Because in my opinion the rp'ers will stick it through to the end if its good enough, where as pvp and pve will eventually get samey and old.

Frankly, its too bad This Leelh game im blabbling about is not in english, cause this is the entirely RP MMO, and it works and everybody loves it and play by the rules! its quite magical for those who really love Roleplaying such as myself.
I meen we really need at least RP servers.

so lets pray for the devs of FO to make a great RP MMO and not a Lousy WOW, WAW, etc... etc... copy.

Assides from the players whish or not to Rp,the game itself should be a catalist for RP.If there are factions or Guilds or whatever(not player controlled)and you join them there should be effects on the gameplay.

Example:Joining the bos not only will give new quests/armor/options,but should affect the way NPCS interact with you on a global scale from that point on.General interactions should be either encouraged or banned.Example Mr XxteassyXx just joined the bos.The bos is looking to preserve technology above all but it is not a murdering organisation. While it will not be looked upon of using the option of killing an NPC to uncover x item,it will be looked upon if you just kill indescriminently(pvp effects also).I also believe guilds/factions created by player must be driven to ally with any of the major npc factions thus restricting membership.

All those i propose show serious restrictions i agree, but wouldnt they give us a good feeling? -Duke:I am looking for some alien toilet to bag my bricks, whose first?

You have to really be careful about those restrictions... I wouldn't mind them but think of it this way: you log on and go to choose your character, because of all the restrictions you have to choose 1 of 20 lvl 6 chars. and I imagine you still want to experiance more than the lvl 6 starting zones especially for rp. With restrictions that are super harsh things can get frustrating, though personally i would enjoy some minor restrictions that would slowly devolop over time to possibly larger ones.
