With the release around the corner, I'm sure many of you roleplayers out there are putting together your characters back story and fine tuning the details as we speak; and while we all try to create someone believable, interesting and unique, we can't help but be victims of our own prejudice, opinions and inspirations. Even some of the greatest novelists and fantasy fiction writers out there created their characters in the image of others; whether or not they were fictitious inspirations or real people.
Who are you modelling your character after or what features have you taken from some others that you like? I'll go over some of the female roles that have helped me create the character I'll be playing on launch day:
Katniss Everdeen - The Hunger Games
The strong female lead of these books/films is a character I love and would love to emulate in some fashion. She's a strong willed survivor, who's also smart and lethal with a bow. She isn't without flaws though, she's not a very social person and doesn't like others getting too close. The latter are traits I'll be taking over onto my own character.
éowyn - The Lord of the Rings
Not a very well known character among all the different heroes and heroins in the books, but éowyn stood out to me as one of the few strong female characters in Middle Earth. Her desires to fight for those she loves are ignored, because of the mere fact she's a woman, and it isn't customary for women, let alone women of privileged birth, to ride along side men into battle. Not that this stops her from dressing up as a man and saving the day. What I wanted to take away from éowyn was her insecurities; being constantly tormented by the way others see her, and her want to prove herself.
Etain - Centurion
A film most people probably forgot not long after they had seen it, though Etains character stuck with me. A mute; but a skilled guide, hunter and cold blooded killer. Driven by her hatred for her enemies, she shows an almost out of control determination. That and she's just plain cool.
Some other notable characters I've warmed to are Sonja from Underworld, Ygritte from A Clash of Kings and everyones favourite; Lara Croft.
All in all I like strong female leads that are able to handle themselves. I'd like to know some of your character inspirations. Perhaps you share one of mine or are inspired by someone you know, such as a family member, son or daughter even? Let me know below.
