Well.. But that gift thing is random 
I remember that i got a gift from that annoying battle born who asks -Grey mane or battle born? I said grey mane as usual.
Funny thing is.. when he gave me the gift he said
-You have been a good friend to me.
*Got gift*
and after that he said
-I should bash your face after everything you have done!!!

On my Dunmer character I once had to save him as a Dawnguard quest, and when I rescued him he called me "my love"! 
Apparently beating up someone is a way of showing your affection in Skyrim...

As Hail Sithis said, evidently beating the crap outta somebody makes them your friend for life in Skyrim! I had a character that brawled Rolff and still he later turned up as one of the guests at her wedding!

Ugh, yes, my PC is apparently his bestest buddy after beating him up. She's dying to tell him she only hit him because he's a complete ass and deserved it. And evidently she can now never get married, just in case he puts in an appearance.

I'm pretty sure he does that with everybody. Seems most NPCs you fight like that do.

It's true. Give him money and you can marry him. Guess he's not really racist and only hangs around with Rolff since nobody else wants to hang around with a beggar.

Yeah, that happened on my very first character, and that was the last time any of my characters ever brawled with him!
Yeah, that happens with everyone you brawl, but with him it's even more of a WTF?! than with anybody else I can think of!
