Romance in Fallout 4

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 7:27 am

is "bioware" really the only thing people nowadays can come up with when the words romance and game are used in the same sentence? This only shows how ignorant they are.

Not only that Bioware wasnt the first gamecompany to include romance it is also definetly not the absolute pinnacle of "how to do romance in games right".
There are plenty of other games that did it (and did it right) and there will be many more in the future.

But even though there are already "plenty" of games who did it, it is still a raretiy in the gaming world. And the fact that people only ever mention Bioware when it comes to romance
supports my claim, so dont even think about spouting bs about "oversaturation".

Games are no longer about jumping on peoples heads and collecting shiny stuff for your score. Games are more grown up today and they are still growing.
Sadly most gamers havent (and will never) realized it.
Romance is part of life and it has its place in a game like any other [censored] feature so get over your inner 12 year old self that still needs to look away when two people kiss on television
and grow up like (probably) your favorite hobby is just trying to do.

I can understand some people aren't keen on the idea which is fair enough but its worth a crack at it could be an enjoyable system and hopefully if they do they can define their own style instead of going for The Sims/The Guild style or the Bioware style, etc.

Because , clearly including romance (which in bioware model almost always ends up: You solve a problem of mine, now I love you, lets jump in to bed) somehow makes the game more mature.

It might suprise you but to me romances in rpgs are immature and not the other way around.

Please show me an example of "how to do romance in games right" in an rpg with character customization.

On dating websites, everyone refuse to wear Power Armor. So, no.

Also, lately? Romance is pretty much an established topic as soon as a game is announced. There's nothing wrong with RPG fans wanting more roleplaying. I can certainly play the game without romance ever being a mechanic, but I can understand why players want the option. Immersion and player freedom have always been main goals for Bethesda. It's not a shocking topic. It's an understandable, and frankly, an expected one. There's no need to denounce how other gamers want to play.

Oh, and the dog thing is only requested by trolls and not to be taken seriously.

I'm personally not for too much romantic content. I mean, I guess their could be an option, but I don't think I'd use it. Even if it's written dynamically, it's just a game, and eventually the script ends, and when it does? That mannequin just standing there, in your home, with stock lines of endearment? I dunno. It just always ends feeling really empty and creepy to me.

As long as they don't look like Cassandra Pentaghast or Josephine, I think this is a great idea.

If Fallout 4 has romance options for straight male gamers, please make them look like any of the females in the following games:

  • Fallout 3
  • Fallout New Vegas
  • Witcher 3
  • Dragon Age Origins
  • Dragon Age 2
  • Mass Effect 1,2 or 3

PLEASE don't make the straight male romance options in Fallout 4 look like they do in Dragon Age Inquisition.

If they had all just piled inside the fridge, then the entire family would have been fine. So sad.

Also, you bring up a very interesting point. Not incorporating romance into Fallout 4 could be easily explained through a conversation with you and Codsworth.

With a hammer? Yes, yes you could. It would be very loud metallic banging, though.

:D

[edit]

Eh, I don't know. Any average person would be dead very soon after emerging into a radioactive, poisoned, disease ridden, mutant crawling hell-hole which they have neither the training or equipment to survive in. I think it's pretty much a certainty that the player character is very far from being an average person.

And romance doesn't necessarily mean "trying to get into anyones pants". It can mean coming to trust someone, to rely on them and know that they rely on you, and that you need each other for physical (and emotional) support survival.

It may (or may not) be real life, but who said fictional romance had to be true to life? I mean, if the game was true to life it wouldn't be Fallout, now would it ?

Enslaved, Uncharted, Kotor 2, the witcher 3, tales of the abyss, katawa shoujo only to name a few
and if i really wanted to i could add 20 more to this list

and no, we are not playing that game were you pick some of the games i just listed and tell me why YOU dont think its a good exampel.
and yes i know these are no open world rpgs but thats no argument or are you saying just because there hasnt been an open world rpg that did it right means this can never ever work? come on.
it has to start somewhere you know. fallout 4 is as good as any other openworldrpgs for that.
the gaming franchise is evolving. dont fight it

oh so i am only allowed to name games with character customization? why? because there has to be some other game who did it right first before anyone should try? come on.
like i said gaming as we know it is constantly evolving. there is enough potential to make a good romance nowadays even with character customization ... hell this shouldnt even be different
from games with prebuilt characters anymore.

im not gonna argue with you which game did it right or not because i know exactly how this is gonna end.
but let me tell you this: what you basically want is a 100% realistic romance or else you cant take it serious. you should know this is impossible.
a real relationship is something that takes weeks and months to work out. you cant do that in a game.
but at the same time you accept long ago established video game logics because you are used to it.

its a game. i dont need it to be 100% realistic. i dont want it to be 100% realistic. romance has its place like many other things that videogames have established for ages.
saying that it wont work out because there are many bad example is a terrible excuse.

If it is well done and not awkward why not. But this is Bethesda we are talking about.

Guys guys...

What we need is a romancable death claw to throw everyone off balance. It would be a tremendously unique option everyone would remember FOREVER.

She could be part of the sentient deathclaws that exist and is into humans or something, Her name could be Suzie!!!

P.S. Dead serious, do something people will remember.

While the main protagonist is surely called the "sole survivor" for a reason, there could be a chance that both the baby and the wife survived..

It wasn't 100% confirmed that both died - maybe they are still stuck in cryostasis or made their way out already (maybe even thinking that the main protagonist died?)...

My biggest dream is romancing intelligent Deathclaws...

Realistically, I'll be okay if they leave romance options out of the game. It was hamfisted and cringey in Skyrim.

Why is it all I can think about now is that bit from Futurama, where two aliens try some valentines day heart-shaped candies, except with talking Deathclaws...

Suzie: These candies are chalky and unpleasant!

OtherDeathclaw: And what is this emotion you humans call "wuv"?

Suzie: Surely it says "love".

OtherDeathclaw: No, "wuv", with an Earth W. Behold.

Suzie: This concept of wuv confuses and infuriates us!

Cue rampage by Suzie. She'll be a loyal companion, she'll be utterly devoted to the Sole Survivor, but he must never, ever mention the 'W' word... :D

[edit]

Err, it could go horribly wrong. When adventuring with you, Mjoll was an upbeat, lively, enthusiastic warrior (a few too many blows to the head, kept repeating her little stories, but what the hell...).

But when at home in 'wife' mode... Urgh! It was like she was turning into one of the Stepford Wives *shudders*.

Well we kind of came close to romance in Dawnguard, atleast Serana expressed a fondness for the PC, but it stopped there. The mod makers took over ofc and now you can marry her and all that stuff. Also Sarah Lyons in FO3 did more or less the same, but had no more content. Then again doing romance is tricky. Bioware managed to pull it off a couple of times, lets be honest. When it is plot relevant and it develops naturally it works really well, when it is there just to be there, then no. Also there will probably be mods that introduce stuff like this, both in the nvde way and the nexus way. So we'll see.

If Beth doesn't build something romance-y modders will. If Beth builds something that looks similar to Skyrim's minimal system modders will add on to that.

That's kinda what I'm hoping for I'd like Bethesda to at least build a base for modders to improve upon since while there will be great mods made they'll never meet the exact same feel as official content while mods ontop of official content are my idea of perfection.

I tried mods that let you become Amatta's significant other but they don't really do it for me without VA dialogue and other stuff.

Do you play with mods now? A lot of modded content plays and feels like it's part of the original game. Not all modders strive for that, but it's both doable and done.
