I call BS, but think what you want. I'm not going to bash Bethesda for going the path of least resistance here, but I'm also not going to pretend I do not feel they weren't influenced by the current hyper-sensitive pro-LBGT slant in today's media and culture. Personally, I would rather they ditch the romance option all together than do what they appear to have done (not having played the game yet, I admit I am making some assumptions that may turn out to be unfounded). I will also admit that I've never been that big on romancing characters in Bethesda games and I don't feel they have ever done a very good job at it. They HAVE done rather good jobs a developing some varied and interesting companions and my fear is that this romance feature does not interfere with that.
There is a huge difference between diversity and a total lack of any diversity at all. I have no proof that story took a back seat to pursuing a non-controversial set of romance able characters, but they certainly appear to have gone down that road.
