BRINK ROUND TABLE DISCUSSION at GamersPortal.com

7:00 EST on Sunday, May 1st, 2011 GamersPortal brings you the very first BRINK Round Table Discussion via the live custom chat system!

Our goal for BRINK is to achieve the best and sustaining competitive gaming community for the upcoming title, BRINK.

How do we achieve this? By working together, having a place to connect, sharing ideas, and just chatting with fellow gamers, we can get BRINK headed on the right path.

Why would you care? Well, to put it simply - we are answering your questions. In attendance on May 1st we will have Core Gamers point guard, Zoidbergenstein , TF2's Master of the Air Rocket: TecHNaSTy, the owner of Blight Gaming: Blackfoger, and broadcaster of QLTV and now founder of BRINK TV: Mattc0m. Throwing the questions against the wall will be PlayIGL.com Brink Admin bosnaK, and directed by the founder of Gamers Portal Habibi.

We will cover a wide variety of topics in our discussion and hear about strategies our VIPs have seen in their gaming careers as to what makes the competitive community a success. Afterwards, our moderators will be fielding audience questions from attendees (that’s you) to ask our panel.

Zoidbergstein
Zoidbergenstein, or plain and simply "Zoid" got his first real taste of competition in developer Splash Damage's first game, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory where he attended Quakecon for the Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory tournament. From his success in Wolfenstein, Zoid has played for many well known organizations such as: Pure, Area51, CheckSix, and will soon be playing for Core Gamers in Brink.

TecHNaStY
TecHNaSTy, or “TecHie”, started his career in Quake 3 on the Quake 3 Fortress and Enemy Territory Fortress mod. He quickly transferred to Team Fortress 2 upon its release, where TecH’s career really blasted off. Playing for teams such as Eximius Sports, Dynamic, Check-Six, MoB Gaming, TecH gathered pro status experience. With first place finishes at many LANs such as Showdown, GXL, Intel LANfest, and PAX East, he proved he was legit. Winning championships in Team Fortress 2, Counterstrike, Monday Night Combat, and Left 4 Dead, TecH is now looking to add BRINK to his list.

BlackFoger
Blackfoger has been gaming and managing since 2001, a professional player himself in CS:S, Guild Wars, and Star Wars: Battlefront 1. Blackfoger now runs Blight Gaming full time and currently maintains over 12 teams feeding off of over hundreds of wins with the desire to be the best team in every division. Blight looks forward to striking gold in the Brink competitive scene if it takes off.

Mattc0m
After founding the ETQW shoutcasting website known as Enemy Territory TV in early 2008, Mattc0m has become a notable figure in e-sports through founding Quake Live TV, Games Cast TV, and now Brink TV. With hundreds of hours both competing in and broadcasting Quake Wars, including at QuakeCon 2008 where he first met Splash Damage, Matt has been eagerly anticipating the launch of Brink for quite some time.

P.S. Look out for the follow up round-discussion roughly one month after the BRINK release; we will see who was right and who was wrong.

Speak your mind! What topics would you BRINK fans like to see discussed come Sunday? Post below!

Umm. I dont think the deliberate promotion of a web-site is allowed on this section of the forum.
I may be wrong on this one. But thats what it looks like to me.

Not to be rude, but how in the world does one become, a "Pro Gamer" or PRAO?

Pro gamer simply means that they have been paid to play, are sponsored, and have won many LAN championships.

Hope this helps!

hmm. dont have the time to do these things. but i still consider myself a pro gamer because of my ability to exponentialy gain skill in a game.

and also the ability for me and my friends to totaly destroy "Pro" teams when we really get into the game and practice.

Lol, you're funny.

I guess people don't take pro-gaming as serious as they did back when I competed in CPL leagues.
Oh well.

Only because you cant respect current "Pro" gamers. Or take them seriously. There is no skill involved anymore.

Yes you are correct. I cant take any people who say their "Pro" at COD seriosly. And i feel the same about most of the HALO "Pro"'s as well.

Careful, sounds a bit inflammatory. But I get it.
Tbh, however, a few of these guys on the list are really good. And I'm sure theres a few more in the community such as myself.
But for the most part, some of these games don't really tell you much about a person's 'skills'.

Most sayings never really apply to everyone as a whole.

I hope Matt will tune in! I respect him as a man can only respect another man. Through bromance.

As for the whole "pro" thing, there's definitely a level of commitment to building a team, playing on a competitive level, and actually spending years playing games on that level that gives you a bit more intimate feel for that game. "Pro" gamers do take themselves seriously, yes, but often time there is a very noticeable difference in skill, teamwork, and dedication that they show. Seriously, watch a couple pro games from previous games (such as Quake Wars or even Quake Live) to see where the level of skill is. It's pretty crazy.

Anyway, since following Brink in 2008 and shoutcasting (as well as playing competitively) Quake Wars, I know I definitely have some insight and knowledge to share. ;)

For those who don't know me, we've worked closely with Splash Damage on the ET: Quake Wars competitive scene and likewise with id Software on the Quake Live competitive scene. We broadcast tons of live, competitive matches of all the top gamers and teams, and there's surprising a huge (and dedicated) following to them. It's one of those instances that yeah, everyone knows Joe Gamer who claims he's a COD "Pro" or a Halo "Pro" but don't really have anything to show for it other than "Man, I really kicked all my friends asses back in high school. I'm pro as $%#".

These are a different type of "pros" listed. Not only are they really good at what they do, they do a lot more than just play video games. They've followed the game, they've played the game, they've managed communities, they've played dozens (if not hundreds) of stressful, high level matches. It's a crazy world out there. They dedicate a lot of time not only to the game, but the community and team-building aspects out side of that.

I look forward to speaking and hope to see you all there!

Cheers,

Consider yourself a pro gamer all you want, but "pro gamers" participate in tournaments and are chosen to go into matches, and are sometimes sponsored or win money through tournaments. And you almost definitely haven't played professional teams, because they don't go into public matches for practice.

I spent a summer playing competitively for Team Fortress 2 team, our team won a small tournament and we got made a small chunk of cash, but I didn't enjoy it as much...rather relax while playing video games instead of working while playing them.

Edit:
ya. i just dont like when people gloat about it. thats when i have to round up my crew and whip them a couple of times in a custom.

I am assured now. You have definitely not played against professional players. Maybe clans, which are wanna-be pro gamers. But never a pro gamer.

This. At least from my experience.

You really have to be into it. I competed in 6 CPL seasons, and 4 CEVO, for CS and TF2, and I loved every minuet of it besides my last season of CPL. (I won't go into it)
And yes, Pros do go into pubs. But most of the time its either 1) Because a friend plays there - or - 2) Because its their clan pub. I would know.

That is correct. Our moderators will field questions from the audience and ask the panel. Also, once the discussion is over, everyone is free to communicate with each other regarding anything!

Deathshroud, try not to get hung up on the word "pro". It does not insinuate everyone else is terrible, it is just that these folks (and others as well of course) are veterans in the gaming world and have done plenty. They probably have a lot of great insight you might find interesting.

And on that note, don't be shy people, suggest some topics!

People nowadays get too much infuriated each time "pro" is writen. I guess its an internet syndrome, along with the "words" "new player" and "1337", among others. When it's said "pro" its as in professional, its their profession to play said game. Only all the wannabe "kewl" kids use "pro" as a gloating word :D

As for a topic I'd like some opinions on how hard do you think BRINK will be to learn. I never played SD's previous titles, so maybe a comparison (please no flamimg intended next) against popular shooters like COD, Battlefield (for being multiplatform), Halo and Killzone (or another popular PS3 shooter). So that people can get an idea on what to expect.

Also, how many competitive/professional (not "pro" :P ) gaming groups do you think will join the BRINK competitive scene if it takes off? Do you believe lower ranked tournaments (as in, clan VS clan, free entry, more for fun) could be viable?

Edit: Damned censoring :toughninja: Though you know what I mean by "new player"

JUST REALIZED I AM NOT SUPPOSED TO LINK> SORRY. SOO UMMMM YEAH

I don't feel there was a lot of new information, but it was a decent discussion on competitive gaming and how the gameplay is expected to interact.
