E3 RPG of the year

Post » Sat Mar 19, 2011 8:38 pm

Skyrim will win mainly because of Mass Effect 3's lack of a few RPG traits. Skyrim is a very traditional yet awe-inspiring RPG. Mass Effect 3 on the other hand, does not have much of an open world to speak of. ME3 has the same openness of about KOTOR. Also, you're not really free to do whatever you want in Bioware's next blockbuster. I can't walk up to a Batarian and shoot him in the face because him and his whole people can kiss humanity's ass.

I like both games, but i think Skyrim wins, Mass Effect has a story once completed there's nothing to do.

SKYRIM FTW!!!

Mass Effect doesn't have a chance, sorry. And I say that as a fan of both series.

For "RPG" of the year? Why is Mass Effect even in that list?

The Witcher 2 is suposed to come out this year too, that's more RPG than ME ever was. For me the RPG of the year is betwwen Skyrim and Witcher.

This guy gets it.

This.

And what's the point of having polls with other games going against Skyrim ON THE SKYRIM FORUM?

"Well, the results are in. Looks like Skyrim won guys BIG SURPRISE!"

THIS ^

Seriously? Posting a poll of Skyrim against Mass Effect in the Skyrim forums...?

I'll take a wild guess and say that if we were to post a poll in the Mass Effect forums saying "Skyrim vs Mass Effect" they'll probably vote for "Mass Effect"...

You could always post one in the DA2 forum and see what happens. :whistling:

I say it's going to be Skyrim because Mass Effect 2 could barely even be called an RPG, and with the way the video game industry is heading Mass Effect 3 will be even less like it's predecessors.

Leaving Skyrim aside, I think Mass Effect is as RPG as its developers want. If the maker is selling it as RPG, the magazines and the industry will always respect that classification, regardless what the fans think. So Mass Effect is an RPG until bioware or whoever is developing it will decide to advertise it as shooter.
If Skyrim wins this competition it's because it's overall better, not because ME is not an RPG. As others said, The Witcher 2 should have made it in that poll, it's a very strong title, sequel of "the best RPG of 2007".

Well sure, I can call my banana a coconut, and insist everyone around me accepts the fact that my banana is a coconut. Doesn't change the fact that it still tastes like a banana.

That said I don't doubt Skyrim will take this title, though Witcher 2 is looking good as well.

Mass Effect is a great game and I think it is a very tough choice to make but as far as RPG's go Bethesda has this area locked down. No one else even comes close to the type of RPG's they make!

Skyrim hands down will be the winner.

It'd be interesting if you put the same poll on the Mass Effect Forum...

Well, I did play DA:O, but didn't play DA:2, and have not played any ME.
I am planning to play The WItcher 2 and Skyrim. I may give E3 a try, it looks interesting, so far, but it is not really high on my want list.

I still prefer TES, and have played all their major games, and of course my vote was for Skyrim, lol.

Did you mean ME3? If so I think you should buy the 1st two games and play them first sicne you can import your save game from ME1 to ME2 and ME2 to ME3 and besides if you start playing ME3 it will be kind of weird in terms of story

However I do agree The Witcher 2 is also a strong opponent in this category.

Witcher should be up there, as well as Dragon Age 2, though I found the latter very underwhelming.

Nice thing is that they're all VERY different, though belonging to the same genre. Hooray for variety. Though I'll probably enjoy Skyrim for longer and play it for years to come, Mass Effect's 3 condensed, action packed, controlled environments might prove a bit more enjoyable in the short term, even though it barely qualifies as an RPG. Same could be said about the direction Witcher 2 is taking, though it seems hard to precise how open world and how controlled it will be. Who knows. Suffice to say there's a healthy amount of games in the genre coming out.

A shame Dragon's Dogma has nothing to do with Breath of Fire, though. I miss Ryu and co. =[

Why does everyone say mass effect isnt a role playing game? What makes a roleplaying game? Stats? Dice Rolls? I always thought it was playing a role in which you could imagine yourself in and getting lost in another universe.

If Risen 2 is released this year, it is a good contender too. Who wouldn't fancy an open world rpg with pirates, boats, islands and voodoo?

Has an Elder Scrolls Game ever not taken the title(s) away?

As good as I'm sure Mass Effect 3 will be, in the time they cranked it out, I can't imagine they are revolutionizing the game enough to really pull an Award over the Bi-decade released Elder Scrolls franchise. Which, rather than makes sequential successors, only uses the main lore, and the Open World concept as their connectivity between iterations.
