RPG of the Year

Post » Sat Jul 04, 2009 4:25 am

You mean like the Oscars, the Pulizer Prize and the Heisman Trophy?

Yeah, lets just do away with awards and give everyone a "You're Special" ribbon.

Why not, I got one from my doctors in white coats.
Most awards are not bought, they are not the most favourite, they go to tittles that date poorly.
That make little money, are mocked a few years later ( if not atm ), and those that are far from unique in content.
Films that win awards.. Ray, walk the line, La via en rose.. insert dead musician with a bad upbringing, substance abuse and an awful atitude to spouses / partners here.
See American beauty, I feel a twit for being so pretentious about getting a deeply emotional young man that tapes a plastic bag uugghh.
Books, poetry usually by authors that pimp personal grief and copy ideas from the previous year that sold the panels.

Back on topic: So imo a "you're" special ribbon is the best achievement to get, as at least it shows true feeling rather than a quick poll.

ME2 isnt really an RPG in my book. Not enough choices.

Well with that qualifier, i don't think Bethesda has made a single RPG :lmao:

On topic, despite often complaining loudly, it deserves it. It is lacking in some areas, but there never was a perfect game, and according to Steam i've already wasted nearly 500 hours on it :blush (Oblivion, modded to oblivion and back, leads with over 900h :celebration:) Not bad for a game that i would describe with the word "boring*" :hehe:

*Boring as in the random element is missing, gameplay is still good, and is further improved by various mods.

Dungeon Siege 3 its gonna be developed by Obsidian, so........

2011.

Dragon Age 2
The Elder Scroll V: Skyrim
Probably Dungeon Siege 3
Diablo 3
Maybe Fallout 4
Maybe Mass Effect 3

To a minimal extent

Borderlands 2
S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2

I doubt any of these games are coming out this year. If they were, I'd be saving up.

No way D3 is coming out this year. You all know how Blizzard is.

BUT, Skyrim will have Dragon Age 2 to compete with.

I see a [censored]storm brewin'.

Well judging by news posted on Bioware Forums, DA2 is focusing more on combat aspects and simplifying controls & dialogues for better gaming exprience in consoles (Bioware has sold out completely) like they did to ME2. I can't see them being able to avoid over simplifying a terrific rpg like DA:O in DA2 & turning it into another crappy sequel like ME2. The lack of customization of characters (ie race & origin) as well as limitation of combat skills in each class is turning a lot of DA:O fans against DA2 at the momment.

Of course I can't say much about Skrym either as there hasn't been a lot of details published. But the scenery thanks to the new engine looks to be a huge improvement over it's predecessors.

Oh crap, I hope you're wrong on this..
The only reason I kept playing DA:O was to see how much the origin stories were implemented.
I only played the expansion twice before getting bored with it.
Thank you for the infomation however.

Thanks for the information and I sincerely hope they prove you wrong. I would hate to see an amazing RPG such as Dragon Age turn into a Mass Effect clone.

Goddamnit there are few enough RPG companies as it is. I don't wanna lose Bioware too.

We can't blame the software companies....well we can, but it's the damn console makers fault, maybe one day they will make there console's modular so they can be upgradged if the owner wants, like PC's so you can play better games (yea I know pipe dream for console peeps) or if everyone buys PC's for gaming we can have better gaming for all.

Limitation of weapons and armor per class is good for me IMO, I never seen logic on a Rouge who use Swords

You should've seen my dual-wielder Rogue that used Starfang and Topsider's Honor (two very powerful longswords) :lmao:

But i agree. One of the things i like in Mass Effect 2 is the more distinct classes, and it looks like DA2 is heading to same direction.

Right topic this time..

On Lady Moiraines site, there is a thread about this with a nice bunch of constant updates on the game.
It seems more like a P&P style skill system, choose a class, customise it, focus on one side or cross class into something else.
Comes with a full voiced PC, and adds to combat depth.

However at the price of being a pre rolled role, you're a human with a back story and the games narrative is focused on that.
What I've seen it looks more like DA +, but with a minus to individual gamers fantasy backstories.

Mass Effect: RPG, with fun action and adventure with some intresting moments.

Mass Errect 2: Shooter, Nearly forced to romance when just talking to companions, Good Cinematics

Dragon Age: RPG, fun and story-oriented with some intresting moments.

Dragon Age 2: Seems to be heading towards something similar to Errect 2.

Well done F:NV. Award well won.

Speaking of 2011, while all these games will not be strictly (in some cases remotely) RPGs; it will still be the biggest game
years for me that I can remember:

Skyrim
The Witcher 2
Shogun 2
Dragon Age 2
Mass Effect 3

and: Conan Hyborian Adventures gets a new engine.

Considering the hours I put into a game, I can't imagine where I'll find the time.

I dont see the similarities, yeah you can only be human and limits in weapons and apparel for each class (thats not bad for me IMO, more unique class)

Care to explain other similarities? please?

I played New Vegas the first day it was out and only have one bug that was game breaking. The patch the day after solved most of the major problems.

It was my favorite RPG of the year, and I play me some RPGs. :)

I also tend to agree with the guys that review RPGs over at PC Gamer. Then again, they're around my age, so they've probably played as many RPGs over the years as I have. The last line of their magazine review for NV was, "New Vegas has out-Fallouted Fallout 3." I'd tend to agree. Some people don't, and that's cool too. Let's not let this thread become another "which is better" bark-fest, please.

Mass Effect 2 might be linear, but it is certainly more interesting and engagin than New Vegas. The choices you make actually make a difference unlike New Vegas. Seriously, there is no arguing about whether or not Mass Effect is an RPG or not. Does having a good combat system suddenly exclude a game from being an RPG? No! What a stupid thing to say.

I wouldn't say more engaging. I couldn't get enough of the first one and I liked the second one but I don't have the same want or need to finish the game. I still go back to fnv to play, I haven't touched me2 since school started, just not interested.

Oh really? I guess I'm wrong for not being interested or engaged in ME2.

BS. My actions in NV build and destroy cities. My actions determine who gets Vegas. My actions change the face of the Mojave.

Who said it was combat that determined what's a RPG and what's not? Combat is simply one factor. Another is the ability to create an intricate and personal character. Mass Effect fails on that as much as it fails on Fallout 3. Another is the freedom of choice, which is laughable in Mass Effect, because every choice is two dimensional to reflect on their Paragon and Renegade system. Fallout: NV offers me multiple ways to finish a quest. Here's another: restrictions and consequences imposed on the CHARACTER'S ability. Is that anywhere in Mass Effect? NO.

If ending sliders really mean so much to you, shdowhuntt60, then so be it. Mass Effect 2 is still an RPG, like it or not.

Did I say it wasn't a RPG? I simply said it wasn't as much of a RPG as NV as you stated.
