RPs creating their own lore?

Post » Fri Oct 08, 2010 5:24 pm

Just wondering if RPs ever travel beyond the facts and actually create their own lore and what not? Cause from what I've seen so far(mind you, I'm still very new) the RPs just revolve around already told events, just in a different manner.

The Immortal Blood Timeline (as far as I'm aware) basically has it's own lore regarding the RPs and their events.

Many RP's make their own lore. I guess it all just depends on that person's creativity.

If I get the hang of RP's in Desert Rose, than I will probably make my own based on my own fantasy world (which is yet to be created)

That is because many of the events are some of the most trying times. Its popular to retell the oblivion crisis or the events immediately following. The Immortal blood timeline takes place after so everything we have done so far is our own lore, but seeing as how the events of Skyrim are many years later we have a lot of leeway to write our own stuff.

Part of the reason I decided to do Madgod the way I did it was because I wanted something 'fresh' coming off of End of an Era, which was just a party-based retelling of TES4. This way, I can invent however I please, tweak the Realm however I see fit and still have it be plausible within the bounds of established lore. There's virtually nothing to indicate that such a thing could not happen, so.. *shrug* Why not?

As for others, I can't speak for them, but as was said, the timelines of the various games take place during times of strife and war in Tamriel, making them excellent bases for an RP.

EDIT: I made the original idea as Era itself was in its death throes, intending to put it up after it died, but.. stuff got in the way of that. I think it turned out better in the end for it, though, as i had more time to think it through and create. Bending lore without totally breaking it is hilariously fun, and as long as you leave it at least somewhat grounded in known lore, you can do pretty much whatever you want and people won't complain. Adhering strictly to the Beth-sanctioned lore can be fun, but it's harder, for me personally at least, to do.

I've made 3 TES universe RPs and Fan-fics of my own lore dating after the OC and Morrowind. I now have 5

I actually like the timeline's lore more than the actual TES lore, tbh.

Isn't that because there is no established lore for the period the timeline covers?

Alright, cool. I was simply wondering if it was possible for RPs to take place in events that were never talked about, such as creating a whole new event, so long as it fills the basis of TES lore.

More so because a lot of the stuff occurring in the Timeline, including magic and society, is not explicitly described by the video game lore. This gives us much freedom, as Storyteller has proven, to essentially build an entire civilization from the outline given in TES, and someone else can come along and give a different rendition of that society yet it still be the same, if they work with and around the established lore.

For my Dragon's Saga Rps, I used what little was known of Dragons in TES established lore, mostly from the King Edward in-game books, and built from that. So long as I stayed within the established lore it worked out well. And when I created Anti-magicka, or Daea I think it was called in the Rp, I heavily researched magical lore first. Where magic comes from, how it is used, etc. I took what there was, and outline really, and found out how the idea of Daea would fit within all this, allowing the lore to remain true yet add a new facet to TES. This is essentially how most RPs that make their own lore work.

And it is glorious.

I think Loranna's Rp added some lore, I mean, Tedders did participate in which they not only created there own bit of lore it war reinforced by having a Dev RP with them too. The Timeline however is all our own creation, we basically just build off of already established lore and add in our own flair. Hell we had the Aldmeri Dominion reforming before it was even announced to be part of the series continuation, they stole it from us I tell you and put the Thalmor in power so we wouldn't sue! <_< (jk.....maybe).

Haha. You would think if the Devs actually caught writers block and couldn't figure anything out, they'd look to us and our RPs :)

Why do you think there are Dragons in TESV: Skyrim, after I had a four-roleplay epic saga about Dragons?

Coincidence?

^_^

I think not.

P.S. Damn there are too many smilies on this forum now.

EDIT: I also have no idea if they drew inspiration from me or not.

The beauty about the TES series is that there is so much lore that hasn't been solid, allowing us to give more depth in ways that we think the lore could go, and the fact that we arent restricted to game mechanics in lore we create (for instance in an rp we can describe how a spell works and we can expand on how it should be) so there are so many options available.

For instance i fleshed out the lore a bit on Daedra Seducers (the ones with wings not the ones on the shivering isles that people seem to call the same thing >.<) since there wasn't very much on them, as they havent been used since battlespire and Daggerfall. But since it is my opinion the lore i create still isnt fact, but it gives a uniquw view on something that isnt touched on often.

And every RP will have its own unique renditions of events that have taken place. If everything had to stay in line with the lore of the game, then we would be restricted, and a writer with such restrictions means they can't give their unique spin on things. And i am grateful that we have the freedom to do so, otherwise this section would die =(.

Well then if they do come and look in here, they have alot to pick from maybe they can hire us if they need more writers :P

Yeah, next thing you know Sentinel will rise to be a regional power and proclaim itself an empire. Dirty thieving Bethesda bastards.

As far as making lore up goes, I'd say it's common practice rather than something unusual. RPs taking place in the past of Tamriel rather than post-OB crisis (notably, ignoring everything ever said in Infernal City most of the time, because let's face it, who wants to see Morrowind destroyed) seem to be a rarity.

They could quite easily be before the events of the Infernal City I reckon, although few of them even take place in Morrowind anyways. Besides, Morrowind's destruction was kinda sensible given the situation.

I do note a lack of Infernal City-based RPs though...

Actually I believe some of the events mentioned in the Infernal City - like Titus Mede's rise to power - take place immediately (or at least quite soon) after the Oblivion Crisis, at least the Imperial Library lists them as 'circa 4E 1', so at least poor Mede goes unappreciated all too often. It's probably because the book is far from as famous or as widely available as the games, so there'll be little mention of Mede's empire until Skyrim comes out (and even then he gets no love because he'd be well and truly dead by then).

Perhaps it is something we should rectify.

I really have not read Infernal city, I feel I should though...it seems pretty big on the ultimate destructive type situations that make us all cringe with anger. Why not destroy Solthseim instead?

And I would have to agree with FC4 and Shadow666, the artistic spin we put on passed lore events, established lore like magic and the military as well as daedric items and things found in-game that were very simple can be made into something more. 'Tis a reason I always ask for magic to be expanded and more in depth in a roleplay rather than a fireball being shot out a hand as if the character had a button they needed to press for something seemingly so simple.

We have the chances to expand and create our own within the confines of what has already been established.

P.S.

Bethesda has indeed stolen inspiration from Dragon Saga, and the reconstruction of the Aldmeri Dominion from the Timeline.

Because Solshteim is badass. THe bright side of the Morrowind destruction is that the Dunmer refuges can now be food for Hircine's hounds in the next hunt.

See some of our guys throwing the name out in the community and I have to agree with them, the Knight, the Sword, and the Sentinel is great for everyone. Whether it be adventure, war, politics its all in there. Hell you could have a chef in the mix and everything would work out. Character development is huge in the timeline roleplays and everyone's character has so far been grand and unique. From your Epic hero types saving the provinces from destruction to being a simple author or poet witnessing the events going on in the world. Whether it be hunting down an ancient artifact, seeking power for yourself, or simply trying to avoid the problems of a haunting past.

Examples from the Roleplay:
Serosi: An infamous ex-Morag Tong assassin who is wanted dead by cultists, other assassins, a mysterious organization of powerful entities (the khojmar) who finds himself in the oddest corners of the world working with people of renown an ill repute.

Swims-in-Shadows: At first he showed up to the Timeline giving off a green soldier vibe, and ended up transforming into a complex and twisted monster (on the inside). I would say even with the serial killer Gerald Duval brought into the timeline, Swims remains the biggest victim and darkest character.

Baibars Ayuub: Leader of a large tribe of nomads seeking to serve the interests of his people, and that of the Redguards as a whole. His acceptance and friendship with city dwelling Redguards has caused much friction with his own people. At times he has shown to ponder on the odd actions to which he has given hand, aiding a people that were never before his own.

Along with that we have the ever tormented High King Haroun, mercenary brothers who seem shadier than a used car salesmen (I think they'll try to play sides), a Lich who gets involved with the large scale events around him solely to be left a lone for the next century or so (a very wizardly thing to do), a Pirate just searching for fortune in such tumultuous times, another Khan who rules the Forebears and has the worst temper of any conqueror this part of town and a mysterious Vampire working within the courts of the Yokudan Empire, but of a secretive order with hidden agenda.

These are not the only characters, but a taste. The events of the roleplay reach many, far and wide and writers wishing for any type of character or story can find it within. I hope to see you guys get involved because fresh blood brings fresh perspectives, characters, and with that more enjoyment out of the roleplay as a whole.
