RTS games..

I played the mess out of Age of Empires # back in the day. I would recommend that game to anyone looking for a new RTS to try out.

Command and Conquer 3 (PC

And yeah, I meant Kane's Wrath, it was just such a waste of time to play.

Really, you thought it was that bad? I enjoyed the expansion (multi-player, campaign on those games are really secondary to me so I don't remember)
Which parts did it in for you?

C&C4 is really disappointing, Halo Wars was unfortunately prophetic about the game play.

Screw JSF, Russians all the way! I forgot there name in the game.... :P

Damn Spetsnaz Guard Brigade with their T-100 "Kill [censored] everything" Ogre tanks. The only reason I stopped playing was because of a distinct lack of people to play with on Theater of War. Otherwise, I loved that game.

Depends what kind of RTS you're looking for, not all are combat related.

Simcity
Cities XL
Theme Hospital
...etc

Are all city-building games a fun to play when you just want to chill.

However, you should definitly get yourself Dungeon Keeper 1 & 2, they're old but god damned if they're not still one of the best RTS series around.

I love all the Total War titles I have, which is all the post Rome TW games (except for a few expansions). And I for one enjoy E:TW and N:TW too, but I have to admit that they have a distinct atmosphere compared to the older games. Warcraft 3, Starcraft 1 and 2 are good games too. And I won't forget mentioning Age of Empires 2 in particular. Me and several classmates used to play it over LAN in school during breaks, and riding around with a horde of Huns and butchering everyone is great fun.

I've also heard of Company of Heroes, like a WW2 rts game, any good?

Amazing. Easily one of the best games (regardless of genre) that I have ever played. Like with Yacoby, it's my favourite RTS, and there is a good group of people on here that occassionally play together if you want people to play it with.

I'm disappointed with the lack of a mention of Sins of a Solar Empire so far. It's another one of my favourites.

Man, I think I'm going to have to play one of those when I get home from work.

Starcraft and Dungeon Keeper are definitely my favorite RTS'.

Followed closely by Starcraft 2 - and further down the line the Close Combat series. C&C Generals had fun skirmishes and the first Red Alert was good too but overall I wouldn't rise that series on a pedestal.

I haven't played Supreme Commander yet, I got it for like 15 bucks at some random store in the mall, is it actually really good?

Yes, it's amazing.

As am I. It's kind of different from most other games mentioned as all of it takes place in space, but it is an excellent RTS with probably the longest skirmish games I've ever played. Battles lasting over 8 hours are no exception for me, when playing on the really large maps at least.

Personally I don't really like CoH very much, but that is mostly because of the setting. I prefer my RTS games either with swords and axes or with massive plasma cannons. If you like WW2 it is an excellent game though.

Warcraft 3 is also very much worth playing, as is its Frozen Throne expansion. Both the campaign and the skirmish mode have kept me occupied for many, many hours. And to stay with the theme of orcs, elves and humans beating the [censored] out of each other, Dawn of War and its expansions are really good as well. And in addition to swords and axes you have chainsaws, machine guns and lasers. What's not to like about that?

Rome and Medieval 2 Total War are also definitely worth checking out, though neither of them is of course actually an RTS. Both of those also have many excellent mods, my favourite being http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHWzW88DLxo, a total conversion project for Medieval 2. I've spent more time on that mod than on the original game itself.

Age of Empires 2 and Age of Mythology, both with expansions, are tied for my first place choice for favorite RTS games. I don't really play many outside of those anymore, but I will say I was NOT a fan of Warcraft 3 or Starcraft at all. Empire Earth 1 was fun but very tough, my dad and I would always play LAN games against the AI.

AOE2 and AOM are easily the best I have played. I also got a lot of play-time from Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds (+ expansion). It's an Age of Empires copy, basically, right down to using the same engine as AOE2. But it is a lot of fun nonetheless.

Rome: Total War has got me over 40 hours in a single campaign (granted I kept playing after I beat the campaign, just to conquer everything.).

I've heard nothing but good about Sins of a Solar Empire, and I should really play it since I do have it. Bought it for cheap but haven't gotten around to it.

AOE 3 is very good. You can also get some awesome expansions, I'd recommend Asian Dynasties as that is my favourite. I've had all the AOE's and 3 is definitely my favourite. It now has a card system which provides you with unique improvements, sends shipments of units, things like that, which is pretty cool. It's been a long time since I've played 2, but I'm pretty sure 3 is actually easier in terms of the frequencies of attacks from enemies. If I recall, enemies would begin attacking very quickly in 2, but in 3 it can be a very long time before you're attacked (or in a very shirt time, every single enemy may be attacking you)
longt story short: It's good.

I like AOE 3, I know it gets a lot of hate for not being AOE2, but I like it. Playing as India was fun, I gave the British so much tea that they were sending us dozens of riflemen and cannons, which must have looked imposing to the Aztecs who didn't have steel weapons. :P

Is this really an RTS? Great series, personally my favorite is Civ IV, but they are, of course, TBS instead of RTS... :P

Very, very good. Quite probably my favorite RTS game of all. The battlefields have stunning detail, with units taking cover in ditches, or artillery craters (that you just blew into the landscape) or inside crumbling, destructible buildings, you have the ability to employ tactics beyond the standard rock-paper-scissors model, and it avoids some of the micromanagement that I feel bogs down a lot of other RTS.

Ooops! My bad man. I just considered the Civ games RTS all the time even though I know it plays by turns... :P Still a great strategy game!

Im looking for a good RTS game to play, the only ones i've played are Lotr Bfme (1 & 2) and AoE2 (with the exspansion)

So, what are your favorite RTS games, preferably for the pc if not then the 360..
For the 360, i've seen Halo Wars and Darwinia + (or something like that) and they both dont look that good..

Is there an AoE3? if so is it any good?

You have the Total War series (which is very fun). There is also Command and Conquer 3, Red Alert 3, and a handful of others that I can't remember. You could add Spore to the list, although it covers many different genres (has RPG and RTS elements). I never played it, but I hear it was really fun.

I always enjoyed the Age of Empires games, along with the Age of Mythology spin-off. And because someone mentioned it, I really enjoyed Battle for Middle Earth as well as the Command & Conquer Red Alert series.

And if you're counting the broader range of strategy games, I'd obviously have to put in my support for Civilization and Rome: Total War, for their epic campaigns.

AOE3 with the expansions online is fun. Of course it's very competitive, specially when it's 1vs1, but that's how it is...

Offline I actually prefer Age of Mythology, but RTS games for me get pretty boring on single-player...

I'm pleased to see some people like Dungeon Keeper, one of my faves of all time. :D

I don't have any newer RTS to recommend...I really loved RTS+city building games early on but by now they all feel the same and I've lost much of my interest in them. But if you like older ones, besides DK and Stronghold/Crusader, I also liked Lords of the Realm2 (turn-based) and Casear3 & 4 for city-building strategy. And if you like RTS with a twist (can't directly control your units), the original Majesty was a fun & funny game.

Total War series is much loved by many and I have the Rome ones, but I've never played them much because I didn't buy them until I was already in the 'tired of RTS' phase. Definitely seems like a great series tho.

Fallout: (see The Elder Scrolls: )

There IS a Fallout RTS out there... But trust me. You don't want it. Thus why I shall not even mention its NAME, it is so terrible.

Regardless, pretty much everyone has said all the good RTS's out there by now... So I'd just be parroting what everyone else said. Consider most everything here as a +1 then. :P

Rise of Legends and Age of Mythology are the best RTS games ever. Anyone who doubts that can't look behind the scenario, which is also why both kind of failed to get the sales figures they should have had.
