RTS games..

Post » Mon Apr 04, 2011 3:04 am

Im looking for a good RTS game to play, the only ones i've played are Lotr Bfme (1 & 2) and AoE2 (with the exspansion)

So, what are your favorite RTS games, preferably for the pc if not then the 360..
For the 360, i've seen Halo Wars and Darwinia + (or something like that) and they both dont look that good..

Is there an AoE3? if so is it any good?

Command and Conquer: Generals (PC only)
Command and Conquer 3 (PC and 360)
Starcraft 2 (PC)
Warcraft 3 (PC)
Civilization series (PC) ((One of them is also on the 360 Civ: Revolution))

Those are a few that I can think of that I have played.

Oh yes, I haven't played that game at all but it does look good. There is actually a thread for discussion of that game. I will see if I can find it. Ah, http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1154975-company-of-heroes-discussion/page__p__16908901__hl__company+of+heroes+discussion__fromsearch__1#entry16908901 it is!

If you want to play an RTS-style game on the 360 than Tom Clancy's EndWar is a must. If you have a headset than you can play almost the entire game with your voice. Sadly the online servers are crapping out more and more, but it's amazing when it works and solo play is awesome as well.

There is an Age of Empires III, it takes place in the Colonial era rather than Medieval times and it is pretty good. The only bad thing I have to say about it is it has ridiculous system requirements for good not amazing graphics.

Play any game in the Total War series, my favorite is Rome: Total War, these are PC only.

A WW2 RTS came out recently called R.U.S.E that is an amazing play despite the crappy title.

My favorite RTS of all time though is Empire Earth II, but it's pretty old so it won't be in any stores.

Also, all the ones already mentioned, especially Civ, though it's very little like AoE. Also, do NOT get the expansion (forgot the name) for Command and Conquer 3, it was horrible.

AOE series

Total War, the battles obviously, since the world map is turned based.

Warcraft 2

The LOTR RTS for the 360 wasn't bad either. Honestly I think consoles need more strategy games in general. It sounds like you need Total War though, its basically Civilization meets AOE. I suggest a heavily Modded Medieval II: Total War.

AOE 3 is very good. You can also get some awesome expansions, I'd recommend Asian Dynasties as that is my favourite. I've had all the AOE's and 3 is definitely my favourite. It now has a card system which provides you with unique improvements, sends shipments of units, things like that, which is pretty cool. It's been a long time since I've played 2, but I'm pretty sure 3 is actually easier in terms of the frequencies of attacks from enemies. If I recall, enemies would begin attacking very quickly in 2, but in 3 it can be a very long time before you're attacked (or in a very shirt time, every single enemy may be attacking you)
longt story short: It's good.

EndWar is amazing!

And would that be Kane's Wrath? Also whatever you do OP, do not get Command and Conquer 4 at all, don't even touch it or look at it. It is just disgusting and broke everything C&C always did well.

Unfortunately Endwar can get very repetitive, with its simplistic rock paper scissors mechanics. Fortunately you can probably get it used for ten bucks.

Yeah, but I'm worried recently that Ubisoft is getting ready to shut it down, Theatre of War goes down for days at a time it seems.

And yeah, I meant Kane's Wrath, it was just such a waste of time to play.

Rise of Nations. I'm even willing to go so far as to say I think its better than AOE2.

It can, but I thought it was amazing to be able to control units with your voice. And also how it is not about base building like most RTS games. I don't mind base building at all, but it was cool to have a fast pace "get the mission done" vibe to the game. And yes that is definitely a plus! :P

The concept is fun, but 99% of the people play as JSF and so they always win (a territory is won by the faction whose players win the most battles there that day) and everybody unit kills, which is complete BS because then you have to purchase all the upgrades again.

Pretty much, but if your going to play it just for the single-player, I would suggest just renting it. Can your computer run games on high settings?

Civilization series (PC)

Is this really an RTS? Great series, personally my favorite is Civ IV, but they are, of course, TBS instead of RTS... :P

Very, very good. Quite probably my favorite RTS game of all. The battlefields have stunning detail, with units taking cover in ditches, or artillery craters (that you just blew into the landscape) or inside crumbling, destructible buildings, you have the ability to employ tactics beyond the standard rock-paper-scissors model, and it avoids some of the micromanagement that I feel bogs down a lot of other RTS.

Some other good ones are:

  • Supreme Commander (or Total Annihilation, though it's a bit old now - you could also try the freeware remake called Spring.)
  • Homeworld (a unique space RTS based around carrier fleets and protecting your mothership, very cool.)
  • Starcraft 2 (a really great sequel to one of the best RTS of all time, I'd even recommend the original.)
  • Medieval 2: Total War (not purely an RTS, as it's a hybrid with TBS elements, but the real-time combat is some of the best, at least for melee-era warfare. Just pick the era you most enjoy, all the Total War games are good - except the most recent Empire and Napoleon, imo.)

Those are the ones I generally play. :D

it depends on what kind of RTS you like, if you like more of a small army, level by level type of RTS then I would go with something like Warcraft III or Star Wars: Empire at War. If you want a large army, city managing campaign type game then I would go with a Total War game. Either Rome or Medieval II.

Starcraft and starcraft 2 are IMO the best RTSs out there. The amount of love from it'd fans and the fact that broodwar never really did die just shows you how balanced and fun the gamed are.
