RTS vs TBS

Real Time Strategy (RTS) games vs Turn Based Strategy (TBS) games. What is the difference?

The RTS games I have played have all had a player "pause button" so you can give your orders to many things. Is there an RTS game that does not allow a player to pause?

I ask because the pause function makes the game basically "turn based" instead of "real time." You are giving orders while the opponent sits there, frozen in time. I'm not trying to diss the genre, but this has always confused me. I prefer TBS over RTS and if the pause function was absent, I would not enjoy it :)

Or is the difference just that you have to pause the game instead of it happening automatically?

All the RTS games that I have played do have the pause button, however once you hop online that is gone and you end up having to click if your life depended on it in order to even stand a chance. Which is why I don't like online play in RTS!

As someone else pointed out, the moment you go online, which is what many people do when it comes to RTS, the pause functionality goes bye bye. On the other hand, if you take Heroes V or Heroes VI online(a TBS game), it's still going to flow at the same amount of time. Granted, there may be options to put time limits in place for each players turn, but that likely excludes battles, and quite frankly, outside of those, a normal turn shouldn't take more then 30 seconds anyways.
