run descent on win xp

Post » Sat Apr 04, 2009 11:30 am

I just installed my old descent 1 on the grandkids dell d600 laptop. In 98 compatability mode.
Its not maneuvering as well as I remember with the keyboard. And I haven't figured out how to get the sound working either. I'll put descent 2 on my p4 2.2 ghz xp pro tomorrow and try some more.

I'm open to suggestions on the sound problem, and will probably need joystick help as well. Recently tossed my thrustmaster as my machine didn't have a gameport. Is there a wireless joystick for the pc? I love descent, if I can't shoot flying robots, I want back in the MARINES

Hello , welcome back to Descent , in order to run D1 or D2 you would probably save alot of time and hassel by using DXXL or Rebirth- see here http://www.gamesas.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=639 , hope this helps .
they have cordless joysticks but i know nothing about them as my MS sidewinder PP2 is still with me (and waiting for Descent 4)

Think they are all USB for a while now
really think you should consider Descent 3 , simple install and patch . - and quite a treat if you never played it .

I had it for a while, but since i bought 2 and only let the kids use the other it lasted.

Descent 3, thats in a box around here somewhere, I saw it recently (since xmas)
Think it would run better? 10 year old skill level? Seems to me I had a skill level problem with it, well actually I'll admit not finishing all the levels in 1 and probably never got past 7 in 2

Haven't tried rebirth on my desktop yet.
But encountering probs on this p3m 1.2ghz laptop with it, working on it with ZICO I love descent, if I can't shoot flying robots, I want back in the MARINES

"working on it with ZICO"
I am not a computer expert ,but i can Google - and if you are working on your laptop with either a Brazilian soccar player or coconut flavored water , you may want to rethink things .
Think Descent 3 would run just fine on either computers you mention if they have graphic cards.

would say the learning curve is pretty rough for D1 ,D2 and D3. as long as you save your game alot , and when your get stuck see Mr Moon , you can do all the levels ,at your own speed. http://moon.descentforum.net/Descendarium/index2.html

stebot,

Zico is the D2X-Rebirth maintainer.

hoppingmad,

I see you have registered on my forum but not posted anything yet. If you need help with D2X-XL you can ask around there too, but I reckon that on a rather old, nowadays low end notebook Rebirth might run better. D2X-XL offers a lot more than Rebirth, but also has higher hardware requirements. Anyway, you may want to try it with all effects disabled and the switch '-use_shaders 0' in d2x.ini. Image

karl11erx
will have to try your version yet on my desktop. Have given up on my laptop, but now that I have rebirth running on my desktop, will try it on granddaughters laptop. Will have to get back to your site and study up. I haven't posted yet? thats not like me

D3 tried loading that last night, got past the first disk, but the second won't. Seems to have a scratch or 2 in the outer 1/3.. Don't look that bad to me compared to others that worked. Tried to download folders 1 at a time to hdd, but errored on everything. Played a little with toothpaste, but no luck. Tried a little olive oil in the scracth (hey it worked a couple times) My $60 disk polisher,---, hmmm, missing.

Back in 96, didn't we have a way to put games on the harddrive and leave the disks in the box?????? I love descent, if I can't shoot flying robots, I want back in the MARINES

You can legally get Descent 3 + Expansion for USD 5.99 at GoG.com as download.

But D2X-XL is better. ;)

Btw, it's "karx", not "karl". Image

FYI: I just looked you up in my forum database. You have indeed registered, but not posted there yet. You had entered a signature about some people only being fun when being pushed down a staircase (which I have removed since I felt this was a bit too rough). Image

I'll get time to be at your place eventually, wanted to first try your version of descent. Have been busy, even was recalled to work, but don't know if it will last more then 2 weeks.

Didn't like the slinky joke? I thought it was quite humorous myself so I borrowed it from someone else on a Danish based forum. I have another one I like, when I get to your place, will p.m. you with it first I love descent, if I can't shoot flying robots, I want back in the MARINES

Well, the signature could have easily been mistaken.

I am not trying to drag you to my forum - just wanted to give some proof for my above claim of you having registered there. But of course you're welcome there anytime. :)

You can look around in my Youtube channel a bit (http://www.youtube.com/user/karx11erx) and see D2X-XL in action. Unless you're a die hard retro fan you will like what you'll see there. ;) Image
