Running impossibly slow on decently specced comp

Post » Mon May 19, 2014 12:16 am

Hey guys, I'm having ridiculous trouble running Skyrim on my new laptop, the basic specs are

Intel i7 4800 @ 2.70ghz

Nvidia Geforce GTX 770M

The game runs with unbelievable amounts of lag even at the lowest settings, making it completely unplayable.

I'd been reading that skyrim can lag super hard on quad cores for some reason and that might be why? I have a lesser spec on my dual core desktop and it runs just fine.

I doubt its a quad core issue I've never had issues with that. Mostly likely Skyrim is running using the integrated Intel HD 4600 graphics chipset and not the nVidia Geforce GTX 770M. Go to the nVidia Control Panel (software) and force TESV.exe AND SkyrimLauncher.exe to use the High Performance setting.

Does the laptop also have an integrated Intel graphics chipset that it uses for non-gaming applications, to save power? If it does, it's possible the game is not detecting the GTX 770M card and is using the Intel chipset instead. This is a known issue for a lot of users of these type of machines.

Nope that's definitely not the problem !!!!!

You must playing with the on-chip Intel HD 4600 graphic card !!!!!

How to:

1)Right click on desktop and choose "NVIDIA Control Settings"
2)Look at left panel,under
3D Settings --> Manage 3D settings
now you have 2 tabs GLOBAL SETTINGS and PROGRAM SETTINGS.

Under GLOBAL SETTINGS tab under "Preferred graphics processor" choose "High Performance NVIDIA processor". Don't change any other details on that tab.

Now,under PROGRAM SETTINGS tab
click the button ADD which will ask you to browse the program you want. Browse it to wherever your game is installed and find the ".exe" file.

Example: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Skyrim\SkyrimLauncher.exe

choose the ".exe" file and click OK,the under "select the preferred graphics processor for this program" choose "High performance NVIDIA processor".
Click OK (if there is any) to save the changes and you're done.

Next time when you open your game it will run by NVIDIA card.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim: You should actually get with that configuration:

around:

100 fps-> medium settings (1366 x 768 - AF 4x)

80 fps-> medium settings (1366 x 768 - AF 8x / AA 8x)

45 fps-> High settings (1920 x 1080 - AF 16x / AA 8x)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Geforce GTX 770M is a DirectX 11 garphic card, utilizes 960 shader cores, have a memory bus width of 192-bit, and have 3072 MB of GDDR5 video Ram.

This laptop is a hammer !!!!!

After verifying that you are in fact playing the game on the GPU and not the CPU for graphics and you have choppy movement, make sure you disable the Rumble and the Gamepad in the Prefs file.

How would I do that? I tried what mark41 said to do and it's exactly as choppy as before

You might need to delete the files in the My Documents\My Games\Skyrim\ directory (excluding the saves directory) after changing the graphics option in the nvidia control panel.

You changed the option for both SkyrimLauncher.exe and TESV.exe, correct?

If you already deleted the INIs, then I would attempt to reinstall the game.

You could post a dxdiag report, maybe you have some drivers that need updating or something.

Actually do it like picture http://i624.photobucket.com/albums/tt321/Lunchbox362/skyrim3_zps0ceda590.png (doing that you tell your comp to use the Nvidia GTX 770M for all your applications !!!!)

and then i forgotten to say, so actually my mistake:

Right click on desktop and choose "NVIDIA Control Settings"

Look at left panel, and under 3D Settings there is another panel the "Set Physx Configuration"

choose that and at the right side (Set Physx Configuration) on the pull down menu: Select a PhysX processor: Geforce GTX 770M

Actually that should work...!!!!! - and sorry for the inconvenience...

(Tell us if it's works !!!!!)

What files do I delete exactly? I have the steam version of Skyrim so maybe my file path is different but I'm in steam/steamapps/common/skyrim and I don't see any .ini files?

I dont see any option to set my physX configuration, under 3D settings I only have "adjust image settings with preview" and "manage 3D settings"

I deleted the .ini files and all it did was make the game re-autodetect my setting to Medium, and the game still ran just as slow

Have you installed the latest laptop drivers for your GTX 770M ?????

http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/63462

then try this again:

Right click on desktop and choose "NVIDIA Control Settings"

Look at left panel, and under 3D Settings there is another panel the "Set Physx Configuration"

choose that and at the right side (Set Physx Configuration) on the pull down menu: Select a PhysX processor: Geforce GTX 770M

I tried running the update and after checking for system compatibility it said "this graphics driver could not find compatible hardware" even though I clearly have a 770M. I tried updating before too and I got the same message?

Try disabling the integrated solution in the BIOS.

It varies by BIOS. The key is different for many of them.

Doesn't matter. The OS doesn't determine the BIOS, the motherboard itself does. You'd do best to check the documentation for your computer. However, on startup, if you look closely, you should see something on the screen that says press so and so to enter setup. That's usually how to access the BIOS.

hitting delete will get you into BIOS

beside that, that's not the proper way fixing things (in this case - disabling a graphic card), meaning the laptop should work as intended from the manufacturer !!!!!

Anyway try, if you get it never mind !!!!!

----------------------------------------------------------STEP 1

  1. Can you go to your Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager -> Display adapters (How many graphic cards are there ???)
  2. Second if you see a Nvidia GeForce GTX 770M ( right click with your mouse and choose properties -> Panel Details -> [Property pull down menu] choose Hardware IDs (right the first Value here in this forum) ***

*** looks like this (PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11C0&SUBSYS_11C010B0&REV_A1)

if we are sure you have a GTX 770M card then we should go to the next step

-----------------------------------------------------------STEP 2

I would suggest you uninstalling all graphics adapter (Intel + Nvidia )

Cleaning your registry with Ccleaner (http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner)

Intel Drivers:

Windows 8 64 bit: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=22842&lang=eng

Windows 8 32 bit: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=22840&lang=eng

Nvidia Drivers:

Nvidia Laptop drivers 64 Bit: http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/63462

Nvidia Laptop drivers 32 Bit: http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/63461

As you can see from the Nvidia download side:

Supported Products GeForce 700M Series (Notebooks)

GeForce GTX 780M, GeForce GTX 770M, GeForce GTX 765M, GeForce GTX 760M, GeForce GT 750M, GeForce GT 745M, GeForce GT 740M, GeForce GT 735M, GeForce GT 730M, GeForce GT 720M, GeForce 710M

------------------------------------------

Wish you good luck !!!!!

Hybrid graphics rarely work properly. It's due to the system getting confused over which one to use. Delete is one of several keys to use. I've seen F2, F12, and some others to access the BIOS. The proper fix is to disable the integrated solution, due to the fact that the technology is not far enough along yet to be a viable option.
