Running Oblivion with an HDMI cable?

Post » Fri Oct 29, 2010 2:45 pm

Hello, I am new to this board, I have a question, I just bought a new computer and for the first week of owning it, I was running my monitor through an DVI input and it was running perfectly, however today I switched it from a dvi to an hdmi and now it wont even start, i was wondering if this was a normal problem and if there is any possible solution, or should I revert back to the DVI input? Thanks.

Dunno about a solution, but it won't work for me on a HDMI cable. Mind you, I use a laptop though - i tried to connect my laptop to a monitor using a HDMI and it failed to load. Do you get a crashing error as soon as you run the game? That's what I got.

But again, I'm a laptop guy, so a desktop guy should be around soon to help you out. ;)

BTW, welcome to the forums... I couldn't find a fish stick, so have an icecream! :icecream:

Have you set the input for the monitor to HDMI, and does your graphics card driver have a setting that needs to be enabled to transmit the HDMI output to the monitor?
P.S. Welcome to the Forums.
EDIT Late to the fishy stick and the post. You may need to use the DVI for Oblivion, I am clueless on specific graphic cards and thier issues with running Oblivion. I always refer to the pinned topics in this Forum.

You may want to check out this section on http://uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Oblivion#Tech_Support. There are a few links to other Tech parts there that could help you. :)

I logged myself out editing my first post a second time, My monitor for my desktop has an HDMI input, I have in NVIDIA 9600M GS graphics card in my laptop- My game worked on my monitor with just plugging the HDMI cable in. My monitor does need to be changed in the menu screen to accept an HDMI signal. I know my graphics settings for my laptop output, and the screen resolutions it can support increase when I do use the HDMI output.
This might be part of your problem, Your settings might be part of the crashing???

Hey it worked! Thank you, I went to configure options and made it the resolution i needed but it kept changing the the resolution back when i would choose my graphics quality, so i just chose the graphics quality first, then changed my resolution after and it worked, thanks again... i dont know if that made any sense... haha

The ini for Oblivion is a file in your Oblivion folder in C:\Users\(Your Name)\Document\My Games\Oblivion-I am using Vista, Windows 7 might be named differently. I recently learned that you can change the Oblivion to Backup, restart your game and it will regenerate a new Oblivion. This might fix your problem. If it does not work then delete the new Oblivion and then rename the Backup to Oblivion.

Although now for some reason the voices in dialogue are not coming out, only when someone says something to me outside of dialogue will I hear it...

Try playing around with the Windows Audio configuration. Someone else here recently reported a similar problem that was fixed by switching from 5.1 Center configuration to Quadraphonic.

This is a result of not having a center speaker and having Oblivion set for 5.1 or 2.1

Why switch to HDMI in the first place?

The ability to play Oblivion on a sixty inch widescreen Television. I can run a higher screen resolution on my laptop than my desktop using the same monitor, and the output from my laptop can be rendered on a widescreen with no distortion of the game.
