Post » Wed Feb 10, 2010 11:44 am

i just just stopped by a miner along the highway near sloan and he said if i killed the deathclaw mother and deathclaw alpha male for him the rest would run off. is that true? if i kill them will the deathclaws be gone later on?

I cleaned out Quarry Junction a short while back and haven't had any deathclaw spawns in the area since.

what level were you when you did this? do you remember what guns you used, companions you had, or any specific way you did it?

I've had a couple respawn outside the quarry along I-15 but most all gone after the mother alpha male are gone.

As far as weapons, I HIGHLY recommend sniper rifle with armor piercing ammo. Get a good high spot and try to pick one off at a time. Also, take at least one companion with you (preferrable Boone). Good luck! Deathclaws owned me until I advanced in level and got my sniper rifle.

I was pretty high level (27 - 28, IIRC). I had Veronica and ED-E as companions, but they were not factors. I stayed up on the rocks and the machinery in the quarry and used a Sniper Rifle loaded with JSP ammo. Started tagging the deathclaws at long range and dropped them before they could get close.

You let those things get close to you and you're dead meat.

Anti-Material Rifle, a box of Steady, and some Incendry Ammo. If you crouch and take them from far enough, you should be able to get some with as little as 2 shots.

There's also a Fat Man launcher in the Quarry. If you have Ammo (try Searchlight) for it, you can use it to take out Momma and her babies.

If you have any companion with guns as a tag skill and a couple sniper rifles (doesn't have to be AP rounds) you can do them at lvl 14-16. I didn't even hide in the hills. But you definitely need to start sniping them from far enough away that they'll be dead before they catch up to you. So I snipe long distance and then as they get closer Boone/whoever starts firing too, and there you go, dead. But if you're not into using sniper rifles under any circumstances, it's a bit tougher. :)

It kinds of makes me sad they don't regen (or at least not much) since they're one of the few big challenges in the game.

How was ED-E not a factor? I'd say his presence was rather essential.

And then get mauled by four others in the flock from behind.

I run (hide) to the left along the rocks. run up that belt thing a little ways and then jump into the bucket, they cant even touch me (I'm a chicken s***). Raul was essential to for this also. He would run into a cluster of them and run back to me, they would chase him and I could pick them off. Poor lil Raul would get knocked out, wake up and do it allll over again. Easy as pie.

That's what chems out the wazoo are for.

Arcade and Boone crouching side by side make very short work of the Mother & her babies, but that's not a fair way to do it. It is, however, a very fun way to do it. :P lol

No, they didn't in my game. I killed the mother and alpha then came back a long time later and the others were still there. I was annoyed because I wanted a good look around.

But I don't think they respawn either. I killed one near the entrance to the quary (near a machine) and it didn't respawn.

The ones around Quarry Junction itself haven't seemed to respawn to me, but to confirm what another earlier poster said, I did still encounter some on I-15 later on. Not sure if it's because I just missed them on my earlier sweep or because they actually respawn, though.

Paralyzing palm with it's ridiculously long stun makes this less of an issue.
A correctly built unarmed build would be able to take on multiple DCs.
It's not as easy as standing a mile away and plucking away at them, but with planning, a few chems ( Rad Child for hardcoe mode ) and a good build you could do it.
Being Unarmed or Melee takes fore planning, scouting...not just running in guns blazing.
I haven't cleared the quarry out yet on my Unarmed build yet but the other DCs I've encountered so far have been manageable.

You also want to try that area (and the farmland north of Sloan) either before 20ish or late near lvl 30. There is also the legendary deathclaw with a half dozen more in Deadwind cavern. It's either high powered weapons like sniper or close unarmed (gloves) perked. Midrange range weapons are tough. The alien blaster is an awesome option.

In my second game I happened upon the place coming from the east. From the cliffs I was able to snipe quite a few of them without VATS. In sneak mode with a silencer they seemed to not be able to zero in on my location so the picken was fairly easy. After killing all I could see I moved in a little closer and took the rest. If you can get close enough to that hopper thats up against the cliffs it's a great sniper position. If you want to try another trick, use a stealth boy and leave a trail of mines going up the ramps to the hopper then get their attention. Any time I'm going strictly for head shots I use hollow points.

How about the deathclaws in the cavern or near Hoover Dam? Do they respawn? I haven't checked....I'd love to wipe them all out again, that was serious fun. I can reload a save but not the same feeling...
