Safe Containers

Post » Fri Oct 23, 2009 2:48 am

Hi, I feel like this must have been discussed to death but I can't seem to find any posts on it. But please feel free to flame me mercilessly.

Are there any safe containers other than in your own houses? Even if I "obtain" a new home by disposing of it's owner, are my possessions safe in this new house? Or will they disappear in whenever (3 days maybe?) In Morrowind, Caldera was my "collections" house. I had a pants house, belts house, shirts house,etc... and basically just collected EVERYTHING and placed each item in its own home. Could this be done in Oblivion? And what about objects that are just dropped on the ground, do they stay there?

Thanks in advance!

Open grain sacks, the sacks you find 5 rice or grain or similar. You clearly see that they are open, one nice thing is that it's many of them in the Imperial City market district, also useful after you get a house as you can use them to dump loot for later sale.

If you are unsure put an item who is not naturally in a container like an arrow. Travel somewhere outside the zone, not in the same house or another city if outdoor and wait more than 72 hours game time, return and see if the arrow is there as it indicate a safe container.

Here is a list of safe containers outside of an owned house:

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Containers#Safe_Containers

My favorite is the hollow log in the Imperial City Market District.

In this game you generally have to buy a house for it's containers to be safe. Either that or "earn" it by becoming the leader of a guild (but that could questionable for some of the guild master houses, like Arch Mage or Thieves Guild). But in purchased houses the containers are safe. Or Frostcrag and Vile Lair DLC (Battlehorn has some unsafe containers). "Procuring" does not result in safe containers.

... And what about objects that are just dropped on the ground, do they stay there?...

Usually, but sometimes they might fall through the ground and so that's not a great option. It's also messy.

We don't do that here... usually :)

Not even close. You have what? 3-6 containers per house? I'm talking about collecting everything here, which also means not selling anything so being broke. Last night I probably spent a good 4 hours scrounging up 2000$ for the first house plus 700 for the containers in it....by selling a bunch of stuff so I'm already off to a bad start...

I saw that link before, but that exact example you mention right after isn't on there so I figured there might be a more complete list somewhere. I'll go check out that log though! And thanks for your help! :tops:

I've never had a problem with showcases, except in Battlehorn. I've used the ones in Skingrad (Rosethorn Hall) without losing anything. I don't use them alot because it's difficult to place things in them. They are meant to put things on display, so in theory they are safe.

With Battlehorn, and the display cases near the entrance I recall putting an axe (or some other weapon) in it and it kept falling on the floor when I return after being away for a while. But I don't recall losing anything.

However, I would not just drop things on the floor of a house. They are know to fall through the floor sometimes, and then they are essentially lost.

Yes, they will stay in there, however the maid you can hire doesn't have a weapon. So if you attack her she will try to find one, possibly taking one from a container.

This shouldn't be much of a problem because you can kill her easily if necessary.

You can't "collect everything," though. A lot of the stuff in the game respawns. Go back to a dungeon three days after you've cleaned it out, and there will be new enemies in there, with new "stuff" to collect, and the respawning containers will have been refilled, too. It's endless. You could fill up all of Tamriel with piles of junk, and the caves and ruins would still keep filling up with more, eternally, until your save file got big and corrupted...

Though I remember 1 time I put some stuff into a few of the showcases and when I returned they were gone, any idea why? :o

This might be a little off topic, but I recommend deferring the main quest until later in the game. Instead maybe explore, do side quests, or advance in a Guild. The Main Quest is not as urgent as you're led to believe. And it's nice to explore before the Main Quest changes the country side. Also from a roleplay perspective, I think it makes more sense to delay it. But that's just my opinion and advice for whatever it's worth.

Agreed. Maybe do the Main Quest through the Siege of Kvatch early, and then leave Martin there to go back and fetch him later. That Kvatch battle is much easier at low level, when there are nothing but low-level daedra to deal with, especially if you want to keep the Kvatch guardsmen alive.

On the containers thing, I would avoid just leaving stuff on the ground, because the game has to keep track of every object that is lying around anywhere. If you need to discard stuff, for instance to lighten your load, you are much better off stashing it in a corpse that will disappear in three days, because that will erase the junk along with it.

The display cases are relatively shallow. If you put large items in them that touch the lid when it's down, then the Havok physics can make the case squeeze out the item, which can then drop out of reach. They're usually good for swords and flat axes, but blocky maces can be a problem, and some clothing folds flatter than others, so some will stay in, and others wriggle out. Ciirta's robe definitely has an urge to get out.

I placed an shield in one of them and it start making noises. Probably left before it started and got scared then I came back, it was a load grinding noise so I went into sneak and activated detect life and searched around.

That's what I did on my first run. Right now I'm just leveling up my character to play SI which I've yet to even gaze upon. So I don't really have to bother with the main quest at all (although in actuality, I've come to realize how great the main quest is)

I just wanted to leave equipment caches everywhere as well as collection houses.

Silver/Gold veins never respawn as far as I know. I've not tried actually keeping loot in there though.

If you're playing on the PC, I'd recommend using http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=21862, which let's you instantly determine whether a container respawns or now. Very useful.
