Is it 'safe' to use quicksaves in OB?

Post » Sat Jul 23, 2011 8:17 am

Played lots of MW where it's considered risky to the health of a savegame to use the quicksave function.

Does it play nice in OB?

I'm on a PC.

Thanks
:)

In any game it′s always advisable to at least every now and then use hard saves as quicksaves can′t be trusted. I for one ONLY use hard saves and it′s not a big pain I can assure you. Happy gaming :)

You will get conflicting answers. I play on PC and use about 8 hard save slots that meet my needs nicely. I routinely use the quick save before a risky endeavor and have never had a problem with it however. Because some players have reported some problems, I find it prudent to rely on hard saves for key points and certainly at the end of each play session.

I′m not saying they are useless or risky as driving with your eyes shut. I′m just saying quicksaves are more known to cause issues than hard saves. That′s all

To be more specific, the reason Quicksaves are not as trustworthy as autosaves is because the game is more likely to corrupt saves that it constantly overwrites as opposed to simply creating a fresh save file every time. Same reason why the Autosave feature is discouraged.

That shouldn't really be happening, though. Writing to disk is a function of the operating system, and if this is happening, it's a Windows (or xbox, or whatever...) problem. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, just that it should be rare.

I've never had a problem with using quicksaves (or autosaves), and have survived a few sudden crashes as a benefit of using them. I'd say that it's a good policy to keep "hard" saves, but that there's no harm in using the quicksave feature for added assurance. Just don't rely on them as your only save system.

My point exactly

Being as you play on PC, I can recommend using the console to save as an alternative to quicksaving. It's about the same time and is very useful.

Spoiler

Open the console and type save "Filename" (where "Filename" is what you want to call the save)

This be my practice. All forms of autosave are disabled. Nor do I save via Menu. Each save is done via console with its on unique name. It might be debatable just how necessary this is, but if it's debatable at all why risk it? No sense endangering a play-through hundreds if not thousands of hours long needlessly. Likewise I never restore a save while in-game but rather exit to desktop and relaunch. It might be overkill but again why take the risk when safer alternatives are available?

Well, I use quicksave every five minutes or so, and nothing's ever happened!! :) I also have about two to three normal saves that I use at important times.. Well, I'd say it's safe to use it, though you shouldn't just use quicksaves.. :) But maybe you should just do as the others said.. It would probably be safer!! :P Maybe.

I quicksave all the time. but i also make a lot of hard saves generally because theres only one quicksave slot so if i run into trouble that i can't get out of right after i quick save then i dont have to go too far back. So i say quicksave all you want but occasionally hard save.

But the game still needs to tell the OS what data to write. That's where the problem comes in. Such communication breakdowns are more common if you ask the game to overwrite saves than if you ask to have one created fresh.

Corruption of files happens how often again...? Not enough for me to consider using hard saves unless before major decisions which Oblivions has none anyway. Been playing with auto saves and quick saves only for years.

It's probably a good idea to us both features.

Quicksaves when you've just gotten halfway through a quest, hard save when you've finished it.
