So, how many of you have played the video game Borderlands? And how many of you have been to Burningman?
I assume you all know that Borderlands is an FPS videogame set in the deserts of the mythical planet Pandora, but for those who have not been to Burningman, it is an international arts festival set in the blackrock deserts of Nevada, usually attracting in excess of 50,000 people to spend a week in the desert experiencing art and other pleasures in an otherworldly atmosphere that is nigh impossible to describe and must be experienced to be understood.
This thread is to discuss both the videogame Borderlands and the arts festival Burningman, and the similarities between the two. For instance, both involve deserts, weird costumes, cool music, freaks, unusual vehicles and blowing "crap" up or burning it down. (Actually, we use a different four letter word for "crap" at Burningman, but let's keep the discussion at the kiddie level to abide by forum rules. There is a lot of "crap" that happens at Burningman we cannot talk about here, but there is also a lot of cool stuff that can be discussed, so lets keep it clean and be careful about what links you post -- yes, that means no links to photos of things like Jiffy Lube, the Temple of Atonement or the Great Canadian [censored] Eating Contest).
I have not been to Burningman for a few years. Maybe I got burned out, or maybe it was starting to get a little too mainstream for my tastes. Either way, I dropped out of the Burningman scene a while back, but I just started playing Borderlands again and the atmosphere and feel of it reminded me so much of Burningman that it gave me the idea for this thread, just to see if there are any other burners out there and whether Borderlands reminded you of Burningman.
The DPW motto Safety Third just seems so apropos to Borderlands. Is it a coincidence that Nine Toes (who also had three balls) wears a "safety first" sign over his gonads? And the structures scattered around the Pandora wasteland look so much like the "tents" and stuff people build at Burningman, it just feels like I am back on the playa.
Then there is the Mad Max inspired Death Guild Thunderdome at Burningman and their flame thrower art cars that seem reflected in some of the roving bandits in Borderlands and the rocket launching Catch-A-Ride vehicles.
Am I the only one who thinks this way. Does anyone know what I am talking about.
Are there any other burners out there in Bethesda forum land?
