Samurai

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 2:04 pm

Anyone else read the books that the artist had on his bookshelf? Lot's of viking stuff and I also saw a book called Samurai. Hopefully they will have some sort of Samurai outfit for RP.

IF you're into that kind of stuff.

P.S. Gameplay will be out Friday because I won't be home all day to check on what the update is and that's just my luck

Orsimer (Orc) armor has always seemed inspired by Japanese design, the one in Morrowind was practically Samurai armor, and the one in Oblivion wasn't far off. I've always imagined the Orsimer culture and visual style is inspired by feudal japan, correct me if I'm wrong, just stating observations I've made in the past here.

There is a samurai book, and what looks like a Mongol book. They are probably using for those for ideas on Orcish armor. Orcish in MW looked like samurai armor, and Orcish in OB + the concept art for Skyrim looks like it was inspired by Mongolian cavalry.

I'm obviously just making a joke because my class trip is on friday and it would be my luck that Bethesda would release the one video I have been waiting for on a day I can't watch it :cryvaultboy:

True. i would like to see one game that's eastern-influenced, like how this one is Viking influenced... I love chinese culture (checkout my username) and i think it would fit in the TES universe what with throwing stars, katanas, and how Orsimer armor looks like samurai armor..

Hopefully someday we'll be able to travel to Akavir, though that would most likely be in an expansion pack. The folks from Tamriel wouldn't be very welcome there.

It's fairly obvious throughout the series that they have been inspired by Japanese and east asian weapons, armor, and design. The Akaviri Katanas, for example, are a reference to Japanese weaponry, and the Cloud Ruler Temple definitely looks as though it came from either Japanese or Chinese architecture. Add to that the orcish armor, and it's hard to deny that it's inspiration to them. I wouldn't be surprised if there are armor sets that look similar to samurai armor.

Especially the hairdos they have.

I think the Osimer have a samurai haircut you see in old tapestries. Kind of like a stand up ponytail.

If you remember in Oblivion, the Blades had a Samurai feel (Cloud Ruler Temple as well). Their armor, weapons and attitude seemed similar in many ways. Maybe the book was for the Blades.

No, you're not far off.

Also, if anyone mentions Blades Armor, check your armor history! That is NOT samurai, no matter how much you wish it to be. If anything, it's closer to the Lorica Segmentata used by the romans. For a comparison, look at them here

As you can see, the blades armor does not look like samurai armor, but closer to the segmentata. If anything, the orcish armor below is the closest samurai armor available.

Anybody who's interested in Eastern influence in The Elder Scrolls should read about the continent http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Akavir. :)

In Oblivion, I would say it's more mongolian.

Anyway, about the topic... well, we know that Blades will be important (your master is the last one), and in Oblivion their armors were quite japanese, Akaviri inspired. I would expect some kind of Blade's armor, athough the order doesn't exist anymore. Maybe in ruins and tombs.

No, you are wrong on that department. Read my post above, and be enlightened. The only Asian influence the Blades have is the architect at Cloud Ruler Temple and their swords. The armor is practically identical to the segmentata armor used by the Romans.

I know that they are very similar to loricas segmentatas, but they gave some asian influence. Greaves and boots look more japanese than roman, I think. And about weapons, they wield katanas... with shields, which is quite absurd, anyway...

There are plenty of little tidbits throughout the series that have been inspired by eastern designs.

Though, one thing to consider. A good artist will have many various sources of inspiration. These do not always mean that they are actively using these resources and plan to heavily use them in the game, but they are there. I wouldn't doubt if he also has books about Aztec and other South American architecture, or Greco-Roman art, or Renaissance English stuff. You take bits and pieces of many different realistic cultures, and stitch them together into something unique that people can still understand.

Going back to Asia, the Blades, who will make a small presence in the game, as well as Skyrim's close proximity to Morrowind, have all been influenced by "eastern" artifacts and architecture from Akavir. Some of the more elven parts, the ones that haven't been dominated by Tolkein, may also have some eastern influences. However, keep in mind that the artistic direction in this game will be predominately norse/scandinavian/viking. If the series ever returns to Morrowind or even goes as far as Akavir or Summerset, you may see some more Asian influences for the major art direction.

Or to Orsinium, home of the Orcs, which would be the next best thing.

I've always wanted to see Akavir and the Tsaesci, but I think part of the beauty of it is the mystery. I'd say we should have at least one game in every region first personally, as in one game focusing on that region, Daggerwall wouldn't count in that regard, not in my opinion at least.
