You can't scrap them, and for some dumb reason you cannot add a door to the houses which I found stupid. So I just scrapped a ruined house and made my own :P. You can go around and remove the ruined(one caved in around town) at least.

Heh wait til you get to next settlement, they have a structure with no roof, walls are ripped apart and you cant even demolish it. Just an eye sore. I am so close to not even bothering with them anymore, I think they added settlements 3 days before E-3.

Be nice if you could restore your old house. I don't like those junkyard houses. I'm sure people building them could do better. Wait for mods I guess

You cannot add a door directly, this is true. But with the use of floor (use a large or small floor tile as you see fit), or better yet, Structure>Wood>Floor>Foundation, you can add a small foyer with a doorway. The biggest issue is that it can be tricky creating a foyer which isn't so porous that you can walk in from the sides. I have found Structure>Wood>Wall>End helpful in this regard. Note that this is waaay to the right on wooden wall selections.

Without the ability to get fix the roofing, however, the scrap shacks you built are probably better for warmth and rain-shedding.

True. The street cleaners have really fallen behind. You'd think at least Cogs would clean that up in his spare time. Hell all he would have to do is hover over them and burn them with his exhaust. How hard is that?

Yep the whole building houses thing just doesn't appeal to me because of the lack of attention to detail... we can build complicated water purification devices but we can't build walls or roofs without holes in them, can't build drywall or go and paint anything, and have lots of debris laying all over that can't be modified... I expect the modders will fix all this and they know it so they kept it simple... for now I'm content to just put some beds in the existing beat up houses which actually look better than what you can build in many cases even beat up. Log houses would be a nice touch too and you think they'd be easier for settlers of this type to build.

Basically the options for people who like things neat and tidy are limited... too much cluttery debris that can't be removed, trees can't be planted, etc... if I'm gonna do settlements I want them to look good or I'm not gonna even do them at all, besides ones forced on me in quests.

I've decided to go to the very back of sanctuary behind the big tree. I am building my house/compound back there. It the best location with the largest killing field. basically the whole coldesac with tree is your base.
