Sandbox Editor for the Consoles? If not, then please Crytek!

Post » Sun Mar 22, 2009 5:31 am

Ok so i was wondering if there will be a dumbed down sandbox editor for the consoles, because if there was it would increase sales by alot and gameplay hours.
Put it this way. I have crysis 1 (my pc can barley run it) and in total i have spent more hours on the sandbox editor then i have on the campain.. no times the hours i have played the sandbox editor more then the campain by about x12,
Now i know it will be a challenge to put a sandbox editor onto the consoles but think about it, Me, i dont want to go out and blow about $1000 for a computer just so i can use the sandbox editor with good graphics. When i and i bet many other people would rather go out buy a console that can run crysis 2 and every other game with good graphics and no lag, and still have the sandbox editor (a dumbed down one of course)
So please crytek, dont make crysis 2 turn out like **** operatoin flashpoint dragon rising turned out...
please put a sandbox editor on the consoles :)

I also know many pc gamers will post ''oh you **** console gamers you stuffed up crysis 2 for the pc''.
FIRST of all have u pc gamers read anywhere saying that the pc version is going to be stripped down because of the console versions?? please answer that for me alright

No, consoles basicly are pushed to the limits only with the game even. The editor would be too much for the console's to handle.

Just a simple map editor would be great! Not a true editor, just the parts for making maps. :)

sigh, this again. well, the editor is too complex for consoles, and would allow for exploits, as well as the ability to lag the hell out of a console if messed around with. Crytek just doesnt have the time to build a small version that could conform to a controler or to even give away their prize engine

Its physically impossible. For the map editor to work, you have to load in the ENTIRE level into ram. In crysis 1 and warhead, that was around 1.2gb, which is around 2-3x more ram than either console has. Also, all of the functions would need to be reworked, like ToD, FG (good luck with that), track view, etc.

If it was just a multi-player editor (for example), you would still be limited as loading in the full list of assets, effects and such would still use to many resources.

On top of that, what would crytek gain from this? Sure, its a nice community feature, but the existing editor that comes free with the PC game is the EXACT SAME one they used to make the game. For that editor, its basically just coping the .exe to the disc. Thats all they need to do. For the consoles it would take a ton of time, resources, QA, etc.

im sure this could be done!
of course PC players will be able to do more with an advanced sandbox editor, but to have something simple for 360 and ps3 would be nice. far crys editor was nice, it wasnt complex and you couldnt make the death star, but it was fun messing around with friends.

i support this fully...even though ill be getting this for PC :P

i Doubt it. the CE3 is not made for developing on consoles. as far as i know it is based to work on a developer PC with 360 and PS3 hooked up for real time coverting to those consoles. its not actually suitable for acutal modding on consoles.

but crytek could probably make a map editor for consoles, if they think it is worth the time and effort

id love to get this for the pc but since i dont have a gaming computer i should soon tho ill be gettin this for the 360, but if they dont put any sort of editor onto the consoles do you think we would get cheat codes so we could free roam spawn vehicles etc that would be pretty awesome if we could free roam spawn any vehicle weapon then just muck around with them, that would in my opinion be better then a map editor

I think consoles should get the sandbox editor when PCs get console exclusive titles like Uncharted or GOW2/3, I think that's a fair trade-off :P.

But in all seriousness, I doubt that the full-blown sandbox editor will be available on consoles. Maybe a limited map editor will slither down through DLC, but other than that I doubt it.

PC guys...no one is asking for your Sandbox editor. Just an interface to build simple levels. Far Cry 2 did this well, and it extended the life of that game much longer than it would've without one.

Console resources aren't an issue, because you set hard limits on how much memory the level is allowed. You can't 'overload' the console that way. Sure they won't match what the PC editor can do, but building and playing custom levels has huge potential if the online gameplay is solid.

It would be a great tool to hook new fans to the game, and keep them playing it until the next version comes out. Just hope the devs thought it thru.

Firstly, those of you think it's impossible to add in the sandbox editor to console version of Crysis 2 might want rethink.

Nothing is impossible to do. If Crytek had more time, they'd possibly add it in, but with the time they have now, I doubt we'll see something like this.

Plus, if they want to make it for Console, I believe they need work on how to make it easy for console users, after all, the Sandbox 3 editor had loads of features, dumbing it down would make it a copy of the FC2 editor.

I say don't make a map editor for the consoles and there's several reasons why I say that.

First is that the editor would have to be dumbed down to a level where it could fit in the console and be controlled by its controller. That would likely mean it would be restricted to small maps and have lots of unmodifiable presets. A good example of what you might end up with would be the (shudder) Far Cry 2 editor. Ask yourself, do you REALLY want such an editor for Crysis 2?

The second reason is that that editor would have to be written, which takes time and manpower. Personally I'd rather that Crytek spent that time and manpower making Crysis 2 a better game, perfecting the existing editor (memory, bugs, etc) and adding more objects/entities to the editor's library.

Comments?

Iv expressed my views on this already but here they are again: If there was an editor there would have to be a dedicated server just to hold onto all of the crap that you console users would be making. - that's not gonna work out for Crytek :P

The console version of this game will be Crytek's cash cow...if it's as good as expected it will dwarf what the PC community is for it. Why couldn't they commit a server and a few TB to hosting custom maps for console users?

And yes, console players would be quite happy if it had the FC2 type level editor available. They need to cater to the consoles somewhat, it they want the type of following they have already with the PC community.

^ That was "Live Create", a feature available to developers to edit data on the consoles in real time... using the PC editor.

Far Cry 2 ran on Sandbox. So in terms of Interface and Hardware performance Sandbox can work on xbox. it is the matter of Cryengine 3.

Of course for interface reasons alot of utilities are gone on xbox. some performance related. thing with objects in Map Editors is they are pre-existing. so the map file is nothing more than a script of object placement.

also since consoles can't hit the same graphical level of the PC, the object textures are of lower resolutions making the file size smaller. so the load that the PC endures is not the same the console will have.

Cryengine 3 and FC2's Dunia are not the same, but they are both resource demanding and have similar aspects. for Xbox the single player had Interlacing on it despite that it was outputting 720p by the console. in the same sense alot of games are 600p upscaled to 720p by the xbox. what makes the relevant is that in Far Cry 2 the Multiplayer Graphics were scaled down over the richer Campaign.

The same could be done for the Map Editor. Map Editor Mode can be scaled down 720i or 600i up-sampled to the TV as 720p, while playing the game normally could offer 630p and 720p

My point is there are alot of Technical Aspects that may apply to the PC that can't be applied the same way to the consoles. I think it can be done

one more thing. in Far Cry 2 console you could not 100% replicate a Multiplayer map. because features that were open to developers are locked to the xbox. same thing for Crysis if they do it.

@belcijan 15 IMO, they haven't shown any kind of editor for the consoles. If you don't understand what Live Create is, then go read it from the crytek site.

I hope they won't make a console editor, as it would most likely result to a weak editor for the PC community, too.
