Sanddrenched Desert

Post » Tue Mar 30, 2010 4:15 pm

I noticed a few Rp's centered around idea's previously found in books etc. and it got me thinking about some books i'd read, i wondered what crazy and new idea i could incorporate using material i'd already read, so, who else has read Dune? :)

This sun shone brightly in the sky, the vast sea of sand stretched out beyond the soldiers, they stared into the very maw of what could be considered hell, the Wasteland was already a hardscrabble place to survive, but the desert.... the desert was the closest you could come to hell on earth. a large mutie vulture flapped mindlessly overhead, surveying the sands for anything to eat, this though brought Private Linden Richards stomach growling, he sighted through the binoculars along the vast shimmering sands for the hundredth time today

"This is [censored]" he concluded with a pang of agitation "this [censored] thing hasn't shown its ugly head for days now, i don't know why they have us doing this [censored]" Linden had been a part of House Corrino for only a short time now and had developed the manners that the others were encouraged to uphold, as such his speech was peppered with cursing more than the average soldier's would be, though the heat and wild goos chase might have become a factor as well

"'Cmon Linden, you know were out here for a good reason, this thing has been disrupting supply runs for us, were doing a good job here" his partner vainly attempted to soothe Linden's anger

"Oh well thank god for such a blessed [censored] reward, i wouldn't want to be lounging back at base, no, that wouldn't be doing this great organization justice" he spat into the sand disgustedly, it was almost instantly absorbed into the coarse sand "Screw this, im getting a drink of water" he tossed the binoculars to his partner and entered the small dusty tent they had set up, he opened a small refrigerator and withdrew two bottles of clear water, he twisted the lid off the first and drank deeply of the refreshing liquid, nothing had ever tasted so good in his life, he screwed the cap back on and walked out of the tent, hissing as the blinding sun slammed into his eyes once more, he walked toward his friend but stopped short, a look of shock spread across his face, he dropped the water and ran to the body of his mangled and crushed partner, it seemed like he was flattened, he was bleeding profusely and some of his innards had squirmed out of some of his orifices, it was a gruesome sight to say the least, a shadow spread over Linden, who looked up at his imminent death, his scream pierced the desert winds, and soon the sand fell silent once more.....

I wont reveal the location globally as to where this story takes place, but its set atop a tall mountain range that overlooks a vast, arid desert, across a stretch of desert lies a loosely built community that draws its life from the relatively radiation free river that runs through the middle of this dry dustbowl, the sides of the aforementioned mountain are covered in thick lush jungles which have sprung up due to the moist and humid air that cascades over the sides, moisture carried from the huge heaving sea on the other side of the mountain, the Inhabitants call it only "Arrakis"

Organizations:
Padishah- The Padishah is a government based organization, they hold onto the goals of reclaiming the wasteland as their own, much in the same way as the Enclave, they uphold a sense of dignity and expect this from their members, meaning most recruits quickly learn good manners and speak with a newfound tact and do away with most of the slang and improper usage of words they may have grown accustomed to in the wasteland, unlike the Enclave they do not look down upon irradiated humans, they treat them as simply human beings, though they usually look down upon ghouls, but do not actively discourage them, they tend to avoid those who could be seen to be rude or lacking in manners, The Padishah control the old abandoned pre-war scientific facilities located at the very top of the mountain ranges, from here they survey the land around them and dictate their will, they have learned from the mistakes of their predecessors and tend to stay away from the overuse of technology, as such they have created and trained what they call "Mentats" after the popular drug, Mentats are humans trained to mimic computers: human minds developed to staggering heights of cognitive and anolytical ability, Unlike computers, however, Mentats are not simply calculators. Instead, the exceptional cognitive abilities of memory and perception are the foundations for supra-logical hypothesizing. Mentats are able to sift large volumes of data and devise concise anolyses in a process that goes far beyond logical deduction: Mentats cultivate "the naive mind", the mind without preconception or prejudice, similar to the contemporary practice of Zen, that can extract the essential patterns or logic of data, and deliver useful conclusions with varying degrees of certainty, these Mentats allow the Padishah to control most of their desert and jungle empire because they have outlawed the use of computers, they enforce their rule through the use of Sadaukar, elite soldiers trained through a special program that makes them tough, resourceful, and powerful, they are trained in secret, but always come back from their training filled with a battlelust and unflinching loyalty to the Padishah

House Ginaz- House Ginaz is the loosely built community underneath the jungle canopy, it reaches far across the mountain range, the people live relatively close to the top though, due to more dangerous creatures being more active toward the bottom, most of these people are rugged and know how to survive quite well in the wild, they are quite suspicious of newcomers and have taken on the mantle of one of the Houses of the Padishah in return for trade and protection, most of the new recruits for the Sardaukar program are taken directly from this province, some voluntering willingly for the program filled with the thoughts that they entail high benefits

House Harkonnen- The Harkonnen or the Ferrymen as some call them, are the inhabitants of a port town called Gammu near the base of the mountain on the side facing towards the sea, they conduct business with cargo ships who frequently stop to trade, they are a small branch of the Padishah and operate almost exclusively from their, gaining a measure of independence through the importance of the job they carry, they live in relative ease, save for the dockworkers and most have turned into sneaky tricksters whose lust for power has gone to their heads, they have had plans to overthrow the Padishah for quite some time but haven't acted yet, partly for fear of the elite Sadaukar and partly because they cannot stop stabbing each other in the back long enough to do so, they view outsiders as a business opportunity and control small regiments of Saudaukar and a few Mentats that have been granted to them by the Padishah

Fremen: The Fremen are the sparse desert dwelling people who do not associate themselves with any organized community, they are aloof and incredibly wary of any strangers and actively drive them away should they come within a certain distance of their territory, they are a secretive bunch and usually avoid giving out information, they will sometimes help the weary traveler in need, they are rumored to live in natural caves that dot the desert landscape, and, even more far fetched, within the desert sand themselves! they are not to be trifled with, they know the secrets the desert holds and know how to survive and even thrive in the most harshest of climes

House Moritani: The riverside community, they are incredibly efficient at surviving in the desert, they farm what sparse plants they can and domesticate the few desert-dwelling livestock they can, they have made an amazing discovery of Melange, a naturally occurring, highly addictive drug that comes in the form of a brown, cinnamon looking spice and is in high demand, it is only slightly more addictive than Jet and withdrawal symptoms are horrifying to say the least, the most common result is a slow and painful death, Melange is a geriatric drug that gives the user a longer lifespan, greater vitality, and heightened awareness; it can also unlock prescience in some subjects, depending upon the dosage and the consumer's physiology, it also gives the user a sensation of floating and generally allays any fears or suspicions the subject may have, it gives them a euphoric effect and enhanced reflexes, as well as making them stronger and faster by pumping adrenaline into the bloodstream, though taking advantage of this boost can have devastating side effects as the human body wasn't meant for as much strain as the drug allows the user to put on the body, in most extreme cases it causes nerve damage, in even more serious cases it can be permanent, but the Padishah make a large profit off the drug and the Moritani control it, they have accepted the mantle of a House for the benefits it entails such as protection free of charge, they are led by a small council of Elder's

House Atreides: a Rebel House, they live closer to the base of the mountain, hiding and using guerrilla tactics to avoid capture, they have also designed techniques to thwart the dangerous creatures that inhabit the base of the mountain, they are led by a young and charismatic rebel who used to belong to a high ranking unit in the Padishah Empire, they do not agree with the withholding of technology that the Padishah enforce and seek a peaceful way to overthrow the Padishah, they sometimes intercept and kncok over spice caravans to meet this end, though it is a very slow process

Bene Tleilax: A group of scientist who run the facilities under Padishah control, they study new genetic techniques as well as psychological and behavioral sciences in order to further the goals of the Padishah, they created the training process of the Mentats and Sadaukar and have been creating several other projects that have not been revealed as of yet

Bene Gesserit: The Bene Gesserit were the most successful and powerful project created by the Bene Tlielax, being so successful it quickly grew in power at a much more successful rate then they had first anticipated, since their conception the Bene Gesserit have evolved into an enigmatic organization that only answers, albeit only when they choose it to be in their best interest, The group is described as an exclusive sisterhood whose members train their bodies and minds through years of physical and mental conditioning to obtain powers and abilities that can easily seem magical to outsiders, it is Matriarchal and does not take male member's, The Bene Gesserit have chosen to use indirect methodologies to further their goals, rather than wield overt power themselves. They have noted the Taoist principle that whatever rises must fall; and so rather than taking direct control of the Padishah, instead manipulate the social and political order with subtlety and insinuation, often using extraordinarily long-term stratagems spanning generations. They avoid becoming or seeming too rich or too powerful or indeed revealing the extent of their powers, so as to avoid being seen as overtly responsible for the rise and fall of the Empire or Houses. The Bene Gesserit begin training acolytes when they are very young, and those of preference would begin training from birth. The younger a child becomes an acolyte, the more likely that child will become a Reverend Mother. The Bene Gesserit do train people at later ages, but only if they are supremely talented

Bene Gesserit are trained in what they call "the Voice" – a means "to control others merely by selected tone shadings of the voice." By modulating the subtleties of her voice, a Bene Gesserit can issue commands on a subconscious level, compelling obedience in others that they cannot resist, whether they are consciously aware of the attempt or not. Bene Gesserit are trained to exercise petit perception at all times, noticing to a terrifying degree minutiae that others miss. When combined with their anolytical abilities, Bene Gesserit appear to be witches (hence the nickname for them), capable of divining secrets in persons and circumstances that are invisible to everyone else. Slight differences in air currents or the design of a room will allow a Bene Gesserit to detect hidden portals and spyholes; variations in a person's voice and tiny reactions allow Bene Gesserit to deeply understand a person's emotional state, and manipulate it. Bene Gesserit trained as Truthsayers are able to detect whether someone is lying by detecting inflection and change in a subject's voice, observing and interpreting their body language and anolyzing physical signs like pulse and heart rate. Such perception of someone else's veracity is an ability that all humans have, in principle, but that requires extensive training to develop to the point of usefulness. The training of the Bene Gesserit is very useful for developing this ability, but is not the only way. It is not a skill: It is the development of a latent talent. Truthsayers are used widely in politics and trade; the Padishah Emperors are never without one. Combined with Voice, Truthsaying is also useful for interrogation and torture. Truthsayers have been known to be wrong or deceived, most often because they are facing another Bene Gesserit who has of course been trained to disguise the very signs the Truthsayer is anolyzing.

Bene Gesserit also have the ability to practice simulflow, literally the simultaneous flow of several threads of consciousness at any given time; mental multitasking, as it were. The Bene Gesserit develop their physical abilities as well as their mental abilities. A trained Sister has full control over each muscle in her body through training known as prana-bindu. This allows her to bend the last joint in her little toe while remaining otherwise motionless, bend and contort her body in ways that most would consider impossible, or put a remarkable amount of force behind a physical blow. The mental part of prana-bindu, or prana-nervature (prana stands for breath, bindu stands for musculature) is the precise control of the totality of nerves in the human body.

When i read the first line in your post ithought, this might be interesting. Now I am not a "professional RPer". In fact the RP I am participating in now is the first I have done, and I constantly read other RP's and am consulting the other threads to find ways to generally improve my posts. That being said here is my opinion.

As I said, this sounds like an interesting idea.

First the only thing that strikes me as similar to Dune are the names you are using. And the hint of a giant worm, atleast that's what I thought when I read it. My suggestion here is don't turn people into places. For example; The Fremen are a desert dwelling people, not a
loosely built city in the jungle canopy
. Why not keep the people as they are...people. There are other planets mentioned in the books and you could use them for the names of cities. For example; In the books the Femen live on the planet Arrakis. Name your city Arrakis instead and it is more faithful to the lore of the books.

I haven't attempted to read any of the books for a long time, but I have seen all the movies. This brings me to my second point.

What you are trying to do here is very difficult. You have to think of the lore of both worlds. The worlds of Dune and Fallout are two distinctly different universes. Now while I am not suggesting that you are going to have drug using aliens who can fold space as that would be ludicrous. Aliens in fallout cant fold space. But the spacing guild could be used with a different name as powerful drug lords, or something to that effect.

It seems to me that what you are trying to accomplish is to create a RP that appeals to fans of both Fallout and Dune. While giving people a chanc e to learn about the Dune universe if they aren't already a fan. I would think that to acheive this, you would need to incorporate the story of dune into the Fallout world. The books have their factions, use these factions in the RP. Incorporate the backstories of the houses. Maybe try to use some of the characters from the books as well. The books were full of political intrigue and magic, use that in your RP(well o.k. not the magic).

The spice is the worm. If telling a story that involves dune you have to make refernce to the spice. The spice must flow. Now again, to use it in the way it is used in Dune, would be insane. But you could incorporate it.

Now don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that you should tell the the story of the books, but how about a prequel to the books in some way. Create an original story involvingt he spice before the Atreides were sent to Arrakis.

Anyway, those are my thoughts. I would conside playing a Dune style RP, but only if it was based more on the books.

P.S. Say no to drugs created by 100 ft long worms

Bah, you think this is a monster? Read the first two posts of City of Shadows. The length would make you cry.

Anyway, it's apparent that you've thought a lot of this out, which is good. That said, I can't really offer any criticism, as it is an RP, and I make it a point not to interfere with them. I'll say good luck though, and it does look promising. Hopefully you'll attract a good crowd.

Excellent work, really like the revamp.

I found your description of the Bene Gesserit to be very hard to read. Try to space it out a little more.

I would have to say that you have captured the essence of Dune in your description.

Have you read the books? Personally I found them confusing as hell. I still say the miniseries was excellent.

Thanks to it, I actually understood what I read in the book.

Josh was born in Megaton back in D.C. Then Moira Brown decided to adopt him Josh grew up seeing many different people and became freinds with everyone in Megaton. He helped in Crater Side Supply as the cleaner. One day when Josh was thirteen this Mercenary came in and watched over Crater Side Supply. Joshawa did not like this so he stopped working with Moira and started to live in the Commonhouse he saved up a thousand caps while working with Moira and he used that money for food and clothes. When Josh turned sixteen he started to become friends with Billy Creel and then Billy taught him all about weapons defense tactics and a whole lot more. One day Billy and Josh went out into the wastes and they saved a little girl called Maggie from raiders that killed her family and were going to kill her. After they found Maggie Billy retired and left Josh to do things on his own. So Josh then started to work for Colin Moriarty as a bouncer for his bar. Afther this they kicked Joshawa out of his house so that the Lone Wanderer could have it, Joshawa got mad from this and left Megaton with all his stuff on a pack Brahmin that was stolen from Megaton at night. Joshawa then moved to Rivet City and bought a Hotel room permenetly he moved all his stuff there and became a security gaurd again he did this for the next three years. Joshawa finally got tired of The Capital Wasteland and was offered a trip to a far off place. Josh gladly accepted and know he is here.

Im going to keep the Houses, but only because of the fact that, depending on the Players, some may be destroyed or taken over, also as a reminder, if you have a lot of equipment, such as loads of ammo etc. as in the case of Josh, this is fine, but remember, the more equipment you carry, the slower you become, having to carry such a large amount of equipment with you, and in the desert, one of your best friends, is the speed you legs can carry you, Josh your approved btw
