Save bloated with 10k+ inertnull scripts

Post » Fri Mar 11, 2016 8:18 am

So I started noticing this problem with what appeared to be very long script lag in my game. I ran the ingame script latency diagnostics tool bundled with Convenient Horses which racked up several thousand miliseconds. After that I looked at my save file in the http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/52363/?. There weren't any orphaned scripts to clean up which is what that is usually for, but it did show me an abornal amount of ~17000 active scripts. Thing is, almost all of these were unlabeled with just hex value IDs and no functions attached to them. That makes troubleshooting extremly difficult when I can't seem to trace which mod they are coming from.

Now, I do have a "fixed" version of this save with all of the active scripts simply removed which brought the latency down to normal levels. I'm sort of expecting that the problem will keep accumulating over time though, since this appears to have built up incrementally from the start. I am not so much interested in saluaging my save file as I'm just curious to locate the source of the problem to prevent it for my next game.

So has anyone ever experienced this kind of problem with unlabeled empty scripts and did you manage to do anything about it?

I've uploaded the unaltered save file if anyone feels like taking a look at it

Have you looked at what your papyrus log is saying about it?

If it caused by orphaned OnUpdate events and you're using SKSE you can clear them by adding

ClearInvalidRegistrations=1

in the .ini file. If its something else and you have no idea what caused it in the first place, well good luck I guess.

How about a load order to assist in tracking down a problem mod?

Have you examined the save game with the http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/53045/? as well?

AFAIR, Wrye Bash has an option of cleaning a save from bloating.

I checked and unfortunately I didn't have logging enabled in the .ini at the time

Already done that so it's probably not related.

I've purged some mods from my load order since then and started a new game. From the top of my head, the ones I removed as a precautionary measure were: Shock Burn & Freeze Effects, Complete Alchemy and Crafting Overhaul, Immersive Amazing Follower Tweaks, Interesting NPCs.

So this is what my load order looks like at the moment:

I generally try to be mindful over the amount of active script based mods I have running at once. In this case I have forfeited most of the big immersion ones like Frostfall and Wet & Cold to make room for combat mods instead. Given the mystery of this problem though I can't even be sure if it's the typical case of too many script mod which is to blame.

You've got a fairly complex load order still but nothing jumps out at me as obviously wrong. There are a few things I want to mention, may or not be real problems:

- I have had some issues with DynDOLOD and Helgen Reborn in the past with it causing CTDs on game load when placed in one of the interior dungeon areas from the later mod that was created as a separate worldspace until I used the script scalpel I linked above to excise all the DynDOLOD scripts - and there were many thousands of them active as you posted about in that save game as well

- the "Shock Burn & Freeze Effects" mod - if that's the one I'm thinking of that adds extra effects to magic impacts, I had issues with that on an old character some time ago for whatever that's worth

- I had some odd script entries on the first save I mentioned above regarding the Immersive College of Winterhold mod - there were a lot of entries pertaining to a telescope you can find that the mod has placed on the top of one of the main towers at the college

Best you can do is sort with LOOT and keep your script load as minimized as possible if you want to avoid the problem, Skyrim combined with many script intensive mods just doesn't play all that nice really.
