Save game "cheating" and how to solve it

Post » Sat Jul 03, 2010 1:27 am

Why to limit saves ?
I think it's a very bad idea IMO.
People like me and many else I know would just get so frustrated by something like that, some would even give up playing the game.
What if a battle is too hard, and last save was something like 2 quests or dungeons ago,and I'm dying again and again in that same battle ?
Why to be punished to replay again the quests I already completed succesfully ?

The only games I know of that had limited saves where the classic Resident Evil games, but they where games you could complete in 3 hours.
I can't see this working in a game that we are going to play for 300 hours.

"Well I'll just stroll up to this guy and stab a couple times, see what happens. If it doesn't go my way, not a big deal, I'll just reload"

I don't get it, are you saying that doing this is cheating?

I like to save as often as possible encase the game crashes, limiting the saves like that sounds annoying.

Saving isn't a cheat, no matter what the circumstances.

Hello, my name is Glorious, and I am a save-oholic.

Wow, small world me too! I am indeed a save-oholic, saving about once every 1-3 minutes. I used to save like every 30 minutes... until I got a really bad crash and had to redo the main gate and most of the end due to a crash...
Save if you want, don't if you want limited. Simple as that.

Bethesda never will implement such thing and i understand why, but saving only once in a hour would be cool (of couse it must be optional choice ala hard core mod). :mohawk:

When will people learn that in a single player game Fun > "Balance"
I love you.

With that out of the way . . . I think that such changes to the save system would be a disaster. One thing I absolutely love about the Elder Scrolls is the ability to save at any time, and I always wonder why this feature isn't more common in other games. When playing a game like this, there is always that element of roleplaying, which often means that I want a specific result to my actions. Forcing me to deal with the consequences of a screw up would only hurt my enjoyment of the game because it becomes a flaw in the narrative in my mind which accompanies my actions in the game.

I just hope they add a quick save option to the console versions so I don't always have to go through the menu . . .

i just wanted to say i was amused by that "just their conservative bias" argument earlier. i hope you don't forget that liberalism allows for the questioning of traditional values, but it can choose to accept things and reject change. liberalism is not just about arbitrary change, but constructive and purposeful change. in other words if its not broken, don't fix it. i would suggest by the poll results that it would be unwise to change the principles of the game. i hope that you can still enjoy your game even though i will be saving all the time. i apologize.

I agree with this because it gives the game an MMO-type feeling whilst playing. In MMO's you have to be strategic and smart about every move where as in Elder Scrolls you can take things one step at a time and complete tasks way to easily. I recently posted the idea of Bethesda removing a difficulty setting so that everyone is on the same level just as an MMO would have it but no one really seemed to agree.

Because few developers actually do what Bethesda do, make games with many hours of content. If the players could save whenever they wanted they might just discover how short the game actually is.

Why do you even care? Why does it matter how other people chose to play their game? it's a single player game. It's not a contest.

There is nothing wrong with saving anywhere. Save points are overrated and won't work in The Elder Scrolls.

I don't want the ability to save anytime and anywhere taken away from me because some people lack the self control to not abuse it.

I honestly can't see why this matters. Some people like experiencing different outcomes for events without having to restart an entire game. Your system would punish people for that. Or for being cautious. Or for not wanting to have to stress out over a video game. I have enough stress in real life that I sure as hell don't want to have to stress out while I'm playing Skyrim.

I don't think this is cheating. Therefore I do not want it removed in Skyrim.

Most people don't use the save feature like that though. Most people save before a boss fight, a hard dungeon, or a difficult heist, so that if they mess up, die, or get caught, they don't have to do the fighting/sneaking that came before it.

No way. If I have to go somewhere I don't want to lose all my progress b/c the game won't let me save. That's just messed up.

I usually save at the beginning of a dungeon, after/before a hard room or before I open one of OOO's insidious trapped chests.

There's no reason to punish people that aren't abusing the system just because someone else is. No skin off your expletive.

Basically it's this:

"I've just joined the Dark Brotherhood and I'm carefully sneaking behind this man, about to assassinate him, killing him permanently, knowing that whatever I do is final and absolute. This is it - there is no turning back now."

VS

"Well I'll just stroll up to this guy and stab a couple times, see what happens. If it doesn't go my way, not a big deal, I'll just reload"

Yeah, definitely the second. It just makes the game more enjoyable. Especially seeing as how stupid Oblivion was with this:

Kill someone in a house as they sleep.

Enter guard "STOP RIGHT THERE" <-despite the fact that we were two stories up in a locked house in the night.

I would have to say if the game restricted saves and only had one difficulty level for everyone, I wouldn't buy it. I don't buy games like that. Apparently the majority of consumers feel this way as well or else Bethesda wouldn't risk the fortune they have in making Skyrim the way they have. Annoying your customer-base is a very good way to lose your shirt.

But I'm all for options and when someone kindly offers to take my options away, I'll kindly invite them to sell their crazy somewhere else.
